- Original Black Spades... Monk explains how after the Bronxdale Spades went their separate ways Africa Bambaataa asked permission to start up the Zulu Nation.
Yo Mike, u gotta remember that dudes being 13 and 14 years of age in the early 70's didn't make them "children". As teenagers NEW YORKERS were very fast and mature. I'm only 48 so my time was '82 up thru the 80's and 90's. U started into the street life at 11 or 12 and was always "mentored" by cats who were 15,16,17 years of age. Drugs, crime, making grown decisions that bore serious consequences, cats was doing that EARLY! The dynamic was way different as opposed to 12 and 13 year olds in '92 or '02. Sentencing for criminal offenses became extremely harsh and parents' roles changed . They saw the danger of street life and drugs so they steered their teens away, but the real problem entered when mothers began to frequently "baby" their male children. That dynamic started to show up more and more in households as time progressed. Monk's age group didn't have that dynamic to deal with. Nor did they have technology to make them couch potatoes and increasingly lazy. Getting on the train and traveling from borough to borough was what that age group did.....even my generation(the 80's generation) as young as 11 and 12! Real talk. We didn't see ourselves as "children" bruh.
word. I was traveling from borough to borough even taking the path train to Jersey if I needed to. Good thing though I had some mentors at home and on the streets. They was like my uncles taught me things and taught me not let the streets consume me cause I was making progress to elevate my mind and my hustle in that wisdom. Go to school work your my part time jobs. But being a man and productive. Dont disrespect your mother and your elders. 70's 80's up to 90. Had to grow up to be tough and be a man.
Kind of very true, 12 year olds during 60s, 70s generation looked like damn grown men in school uniform, were very tall, full build, even chubby with a resemblance of adults going to work. Looked way mature and had to grow up faster
Facts 18 was the bonafide legal age to drink. “He/She is 18 still living with their parents” was the slogan passed throughout the USA. And it was a shock when Obama became president and said “children” under age 24 can still be claimed on their parents taxes.
another GOODIE MIKE …..ROCK ON Monk….you lived a heck of Life Bro still standing …
..thats Bronx soul …respect fellas..
You should've asked Monk to expound on the Hoe Avenue Meeting and what the atmosphere was like in the Bronx following the murder of Black Benji from the Ghetto Brothers. I have read that the Spades was getting partially blamed for his death being that they was present at the scene of his death along with another gang called the Mongols and the Seven Immortals (it was later found out the Immortals were responsible for his death) and there was heavy tension in the streets. Karate Charlie said it in Rubble Kings that the Bronx almost erupted in a gang war until Benji's mother called for peace
My godfather karate charlie told me it was gonna be so bad they was gonna kill men women and children behind black benjis death he was like it would have been the bloodest war in history i was buggin out
@@MrGrimeyOneNY715 he's was not your godfather, his son already told you to stop the BS that you were nothing to his dad ! His daughter and his other son told you the same shit !!!!! So trying to make yourself relevant !!! Your a wannabe and nothing else
Wow this is crazy,I literally saw Monk in action as a child... This man was every bit of a gangster.
Went to JHS with Monks brother Tony. Monk was a legend back than.
Infinite respect, legendary street history...
Wow Monk talking bout Intercrime.. (uptown organization) and what not.... when I moved out of Lafayette to co-op city, inter crime popped off and the main dude in Edenwald was Joe Pratt..
I went to 123 also
Mike I appreciate your efforts in exposing the lies and misinformation about Hip-hop origins. Are you planning to organize all these videos, interviews, timelines, into one cohesive, quality documentary with dates of when, where, and what happened?
The black Spades accepting new members I hurd they making a comeback
Interesting they had thousands and what happened to the thousands?? They could've organized to get things moving for their people imagine if all those young men had financial literacy??? They could've owned half of NewYork along with some political power they could've changed history. Wow
sirpoppinchuck ..word true... your right
They were kids .
They helped birth a financial gold mine in Hip Hop that ushered in so much money, businesses, and opportunities, and back then, the bronx was transformed from a wasteland of abandon areas, burnt buildings, and gang plagued neighborhoods into a place where people could walk into different neighborhoods freely and business growth was stimulated in the neighborhoods. Creating all of that was hard enough! What did your generations develop to advance and build upon what the pioneers were able to accomplish? The pioneers built the foundation and handed to you'll on a platter. Why didn't you'll use Hip Hop to own half of NY and achieve political power? I remember the late 80s, early 90s had the black empowerment and stop the violence movements which was heading in that direction but the 90s generation ultimately derailed those movements and brought back gangs in NY, glorified selling drugs, drug abuse, and murder giving birth to the current apocalyptic state of Hip Hop in which the current generation can barely speak in sentences and communicate and as a result they mumble rap.
I went to 123 in 74,75 and 76, Officer Watts was our school police officer, Brings back great memories
Brotha Mike, why do you think there are so many lies surrounding the origins of hip hop culture?
Big bro your doing great work with these docs. If it wasnt for you all we would know is the common narative of the holy trinity of hip hop..if you notice they take all the glory and never mention dudes on your channel...salute and keep doing your thing but remember youtube will be gone one day so an actual documentary film is important
The ONE and ONLY Jerome Barnhill also known as MONK! I LOVED this MAN when I was President of THE YOUNG SPADES! He LOVED me too!..Those very fond memories..Peace and Love!
I read your other comments about being president of the Young Spades. You should do an interview with this RUclips channel or post your own videos. I love the Spade history

1st div Young Spades?
@@MrGrimeyOneNY715 At first yes! I didn't live in bronxdale so I had the 2nd Division a mixture of dudes from all over but mostly from Soundview. Tex and Eddie sanchez were the Presidents of the 1st my brother! Peace!
Ok, I was told fairy tales and mythology about Monk. First one he got locked up on RICCO. 2nd myth for a 25 year bid. I moved to SOUNDVIEW houses in 1973 and went JHS 125 same year. By that time around 1974 JHS 123 was the party spot besides BX River Center. Mario was called the defacto leader of the Spades at that time though nobody was flying colors. Another interesting thing is if you look into the Zulu history from their book Monk isn't mentioned. Someone else is. Since you already interviewed them and they haven't mentioned it I'm not. This is all interesting.
Good stuff Mike.
Some where after @1310 is where he talks about afrika bambataa asking to make Zulu Nation
Interesting history
Is that Benny from Benny and the sexy emcees?🎤🎤🎤🔮
Is this the same Cat that used to be selling powder in front of Arthur's Roundtable back in early 80s?
Nice int and nice editing as well. He seems careful regarding Bam.

Yo mike the movie The warriors came from the book the warriors which came out 14 years before the movie ( I read the book) into book they’re called The Coney Island Dominators. But the book is far more violent than the movie. All the gangs that are in the book are in the movie. And it’s just a coincidence that the Gramercy Riffs gang is similar to the black Spades ♠️
ok thank you... i definitely gotta look into that
i dont deny the warriors book being the beginning of the movie...however i don't believe the Gramercy Riffs is a coincidence.... especially if the Spades was on the movie set... i just need to get confirmation that Spades was actually on a movie set
Wow now that would amazing if they were on the set . But I did hear is that the film crew actually hired a few gangs to hold them down on the set while filming. Check that out
@@TheCulture..Started1971 Bambatta has a video he speaks bout the Black Spades♠ was in the movie The Education of Sunny Carson. Said that their were real gang members in the Movie. The Jollystompers til the Black Spades♠ starting beaten and fighting everyone on set. The Tomahawks was a real gang
