Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

G'day Everyone, I'm BACK! Monty Website: montycompost.co/ Use code SELFSUFFICIENTME at checkout for a 20% discount. Background story: I first met Ash about 4 years ago when she approached me with this "crazy idea" to make a compost "sniffer" (Monty). I'm pleased to see the progress on Monty and after 12 months of use it is not only working well but it has continually improved through software updates. Lastly, in case you didn't know, I have been sick with a bad and unusual strain of the flu. I'm slowly getting better. Thank you all for the support! Cheers, Mark :)
I hope you feel better soon. I miss your funny videos. Greetings from south Florida
I love a good gadget!
I'm thinking this gadget would be great in my outdoor mushroom beds too!
Because I'm in Texas, the
fall/winter temperatures outside are very inconsistent, and so is the moisture, & humidity.
I'm always wondering what's happening out there!
I don't know if the mushroom bed gives off gasses specific to mushrooms, but it's a bed of woodchips, so there's always composting happening in there.
Nice gadget!!
I just ordered one!
I'm super jazzed to get it!
We're just getting into mushroom growing season over here in Texas, and my bed of woodchips with my Lions Mane mushrooms is where I'll be using the Monty!
It's constantly breaking down and composting, so I am excited to monitor it!
But there was a little discrepancy in the order process I figured I would just let everyone know about...
I first entered my shopping choice
(The Monty) & then went to the checkout page WITHOUT making an account or signing up with their website for emails.
The website offered a base price of $130. (USD)
That was all good.
And with the Self Sufficient ME discount code my total
(without shipping or tax)
came to $104. USD
(That is even better!!)
At that time I hadn't filled out the whole order page,
so as I usually do,
I first signed up to "create an account" with this company just to help my order process, in case anything goes wrong later.
So I did that.
Well !
Low & behold my order base price jumped up to $199.00 (USD) !!!
That was before any discount codes.
Even with Mark's discount,
(which would be $160.)
or the company's offer of $10. off,
(Which would be $190.)
(you can't use both codes)
the base price of $200. was just a bit too pricey for me!
Especially since I had already been offered a base price of $130.
by the website!
So in order to get back to the price offering of $130.
I had to unsubscribe from the website,
and exit the entire website,
and start all over.
I went back to You Tube, and clicked on Mark's information page, then clicked on the link to Monty Compost which Mark provides.
(Somehow bringing the base price down to $130. (USD).)
So yes -
I was back where I started at the Monty website with the offering price at $130. once again.
(THIS TIME on the website, the base price was $163.00 (USD) again.)
Plus, the company is offering a $50. discount with the price ALREADY SLASHED,
(What I'm trying to say is-
Part of that price difference the company is offering a sale price of $50. off.
But if you create an account, that $50 sale discount is erased.)
So BEFORE creating an account, we ARE able to use Mark's discount code, AND use the company's sale price.
I DID order.
and with the discount
Subtotal is $104. (USD)
plus shipping,
my total is $114. (USD)
SOLD!!!
I plan on going back and creating an account with the website later.
It's really great to be able have these discounts!
Thanks Monty Compost
AND Mark !!!
I'm looking forward to using it !
Now I can finish watching the video! ha! 👍
This is exactly what I need - thank you! Hope you feel better soon. 🤗
Glad you slowly getting better my friend, stay safe brother
Mark is one of my main inspirations for gardening and because of him I have around 32 square feet of garden in the middle of one of the hottest deserts on earth in Nevada.Lush so far, tomatos peppers carrots and watermelons coming through.
A truly inspiring man!
I've been through Nevada and it is indeed harsh! Well done on transforming your land and growing all that wonderful produce! You're inspiring me... Cheers :)
What, would you say, is your best methods of keeping your veggies alive, when you have such extreme heat? Every year I try, but there is a point where it seems impossible to keep things alive, once the temperature exceeds 46 deg C (115 deg F,) here in Paphos, Cyprus. Luckily, it is only a couple of months, usually, but lately it seems like it is taking longer and longer to reach the cooler Autumn temps, here. I have an irrigation system and shade cloth-covered areas and I understand that beyond a certain point, plants will not put out flowers, which means no fruit. But my concern is just getting them through this point alive, so that they begin producing new fruit. For example capsicum (sweet peppers) is supposedly not an annual. I have no problem getting it through winter (we have neither frost nor snow, where I live, but sometimes short hail storms which my shade cloth protects from.) But I cannot get a single pepper through the summer heat. They may still be alive upon the tail end of summer, but it will never recover; never produce flowers again, let alone fruit.
You live in a dessert with a negligible water table. Stop growing your garden or move since your draining a resource that is desperately needed by the local ecosystem
Lol, I grow bell peppers, jalapenos, and garlic in Henderson. It's brutal, though the monsoons were a blessing.
Always a good day when there’s a new Self Sufficient Me video out ❤
I couldn't agree more with your statement.
Yes a good bay,from east tennessee. 🌻
Agreed
no emoji but big aussie thumbs up!!!
I’ve got to give that switched on young lady 10/10 for enthusiasm.
Thank you for being so considerate to the skink! The tail is suck an important tool for escaping predators, and with how small it was, handling it could potentially be dangerous. As someone who loves reptiles a whole ton, it's always refreshing to see someone respect them and treat them with care. Even if it's someone I've seen do it before :)
I love this gardening channel and it helps me a real lot. Reuben Gollop (11yrs) Armidale NSW
❤same here maybe not as long though but yes have learnt a lot also, especially since moving and gardening in Melbourne Australia 😀
Thanks, Mark! I talked myself into getting a Monty and thanks for the tip. FYI for the US folks, shipping was ONLY 10 bucks. 😊😊
Thank you so much! We're so happy to have you on board and cannot wait to get connected to your compost😄
Thanks K.P and I hope you enjoy using it. I know Ash and her team are very dedicated to Monty so any feedback is welcomed 👍🙂
Interesting product! Probably not something I would ever use but I can see how some folks would really appreciate the support and information that Monty provides. As a business owner I love that they developed and produced it locally with local vendors!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! I totally agree that not everyone needs a Monty but some people absolutely benefit from it :) We also always support creating things as locally as possible - even if it's cheaper to do overseas, it's much better quality and less impact to go local!
Interesting technology! Very special that Scouter is in the clip from last year! I’m missing seeing new videos from you, hope all is well for you and your family. Love 💕 and hugs 🤗 God bless
Thank you and thanks for noticing Scooter... Yeah, it's still a little sad to see him in these retro videos but it's also happy that he was there as usual watching on as loyal as ever. All the best and God Bless :)
Good on ya Ash!
Welcome back Mark!! Best wishes for continued speedy and full recovery from the nasty bout of flu!
I've learned so many things from your wonderful advice and overall positivity. So glad you've helped bring this device to market - this will help many!
Mad Respect from BC, Canada. Get better soon!!
Thanks for the well wishes! This flu is a particularly nasty one (according to my Dr) I coughed so much that my abs became sore... 😅 Anyway, I'm nearly over it and I'm sticking to my turmeric/chilli/ginger health drink 😁👍
@@Selfsufficientme Glad you're well enough to reply to DM's!!
Need you well enough - - and far enough ahead with your video - that you can get back on that sweet boat!!
Great intro for Montycompost sniffer, Australian innovation!
Hi Mark, long time no see, glad to hear that you're coming good after a long bout of the dreaded flu, didn't know you were ill, have missed your joyful info take care young fella and love to the family, cheers!!!🥰💕👍👍👍👍
I always love being called "young fella" but I certainly don't feel like it! 😁 Thanks for the well wishes and also the support! All the best 👍🙂
Mark you inspired me back to growing veggies 2 years ago, thrilled you are on the mend, take care of yourself. I successfully made my first pile of compost this year by smell and sight. The device seems interesting, thank you.
Congratulations on your first compost making! It really is a great way to make a valuable resource out of waste. Love it 👍
I was thinking of using my compost and some mulch to try and grow mushrooms, that will be my new year's resolution😅
Great to see Scooter at the start of the video ❤
I was watching this thinking that it's something I'm unlikely to use (but probably need, as a beginner gardener).
But, hearing that it was developed and manufactured locally, I'm tempted to buy it just to show my support. ❤😊
My veggie garden in Alice Springs is going great.
Thanks for your hot tips Mark.
That's great to know! Alice - oh the memories... I helped run the Masters Games there back in the early 90's. I was a barman in the VIP tent serving Dawn Fraser Fosters all night lol... Alice has its troubles, but it is still a great town. All the best :)
@@Selfsufficientme I love this troubled town. Cheers mate
if I saw this product on the shelf I may not have gone for it. But having watched this video, I realise how little I actually know about composting, and the benefits very serious benefits of optimising with something like this!
Your videos have been not only an inspiration but also a great education in growing my own garden. Thank you for your dedication.
Looks super interesting, and awesome that it's Aussie manufactured as well.
I've been waiting to Get Into It! for months! Great to see your smiling face and get good gardening info. Thanks!
Good to see you and learn about Monty.
We love you! So glad you're back.
Hi..... MARK, thanks you for showing your video gardening and growing vegetables and fruits bye
Mark, Glad to see you back. Always a treat to see your videos.
Welcome back Mark, glad you've got better! Cheers! 👍
ash is a lil cutie!
That was really nice. Ash is a lovely young lady! Thank you Mark, thank you Ash!
Glad you’re doing better!
Thank you AND thank you for all the gardening tips an advice
Great to see another video out.
That was nice to see your old doggo again ❤
Glad you're on the mend, Mark! Be well...shalom!
It never recommends me Mark's videos but he always pops into my head every now and again. Wishing you and your family (the the chickens) all the best.
Mark you’re the man!!! Keep posting great content!
HEY MARK GREAT TO SEE YOU, YOU ARE SO ENTHUSIASTIC , ALL THE BEST FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY
Happy to see you well again 😊👍🏻✨
Always so good to watch another Mark's SSM episode, it's so good that Mark is back. :)
I am so happy your Monty is not made in China. Bravo to you.
Glad to see another great Aussie made invention
Awesome another video! Love your work Mark!
Lovely to see Scooter in the old footage ❤
I enjoy your RUclips videos… I also garden have chickens and honeybees… Yours was the first gardening channel. I started watching. I love your sense of humor .
Your videos are always excellent Mark and this lady is pure genius, love her understanding of one of the most important components of gardening 👍 Love your respect of wildlife . I’ve used a method of mulching all of my cuttings/plant/veggie kitchen waste/ trimmings and placing them on my plant beds and letting nature do it’s work. My soil has improved greatly as nature would do , no compost bins, no additives just the natural way has produced amazing results 👍❤️ Excellent as always mate 👍🇦🇺🇬🇧
Thank you so much for your kind words & keep up the good work with your garden 💚
Smart. Im impressed with this.
I love that you're still totally the same guy 'n all... and it's about how much you appreciate my guy... but be real... you don't need help or people to help your channel heaps. You have 2.2 million subs and counting. You've made it!
I hate seeing ads for stuff that looks great but stinks when it arrives. This looks like a well made product, and I am gonna giver a try. I like having the best compost, and experimenting with it, so this bad boy will show me the gas reduction after adding raw char to a compost, and satiate my obsessive need to know the temp, plus more 😅😂🙏🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻🌾💖👍🏻
Totally understand that feeling but I absolutely promise Monty will not stink on arrival 😅 I'm also such a compost experimenter so I hope you find it as fun as I do!
Great Video as always Thanks from the UK 🙏
G'day Mark! I see its springtime where you are, AGAIN! I LOVE living vicariously through you during your growing season while my garden is being put to bed. I have 5, 8x4' beds with baby greens in them. Hoping they will be big enough to start harvesting before it gets cold. I plan to cover them with plastic to keep all winter. I have a gardenia and a Calamansi that have been brought in for the winter and put under a light. Calamansi has tons if small oranges on it that are growing inside! Fun times! Enjoy your new season and we will be watching from across the pond!
Great to hear that you are experimenting and pushing the limits of your growing season squeezing every day you can before winter! Fingers crossed that you get a ton of beans as a reward for your efforts 👍🙂
Who’d have thought there would be an app for composting!
That looks really good compost for your garden.
OMG. How sweet!
I getting one!
Yay! Welcome to our compost community and make sure to reach out with absolutely any questions 😄
@@montycompostco
My favorite composting is with WORMS!
❤❤Now this is s great 👍 idea and great for beginners 😊 to understand composting, Even for old-timers that have been gardening for years 😀 no thinking required just some work ❤
Thank you so much for such a kind comment!
I hope it is a successful product! Well done
Amazing idea
That's a great little invention for new gardeners especially being Australian owned and manufactured.
Have a ripper mate!
I hope you get to being completely well soon Mark.
Good day .
The gardening God is back.
Glad to see to see you .
I love that idea.
Amazing invention thank you
wow, what a fun vid and a really interesting product.
sorry to hear you have been unwell, hope you are recovered very soon.
Saving up for Monty, I have 5 composts on the go at the moment 😅
Ahh that sounds amazing! I can't wait to hopefully help you get connected to your compost 🥰
Thanks for this awesome video mark! 😊
Awesome tool! It makes composting so much more accessible to someone like me who honestly just doesn’t have the time to keep compost 100% perfect all the time at a very demanding job. This is on my list of garden gadgets I need!
Thank you so much I'm so glad you think so 😄 You've absolutely nailed the purpose of Monty on the head as well and all the other features you get with it are a bonus 🌱
Composting isn't rocket science, but this device is going to be a game changer for the home gardener/hobby farmer
Aww thank you so much! My whole mission is just helping people compost so hopefully it is able to do that 💚
@@montycompostco the applications for the technology will likely go far beyond that, I reckon this would be a winner if you went on a show like Shark Tank 😊
At least you didn't lick it like an icecream.. lol
LOL...
Ash is really cool! Great product I like it
Fascinating.
I bought myself one of those Maze Compost Tumblers recently. Looking forward to the day those kitchen scraps turn into Brown Gold!
Definitely a very innovative tool overall. Is it absolutely necessary? No. But there are definitely things that can be taken away from it in the long run.
Never knew Mark was a giant! Compost King!
Very Great Duo & Work Good Luck ❤💪🏼💪🏽💪🏿👌🏽👌🏿👌
I agree ash!!! Lets make compost as easy as possible ❤
Easy compost for everyone 😄💚
You always have the funniest thumbnails. Thanks for the giggles and great info. Although I live in a different growing zone I’ve used a lot of your tips. Btw, I’m fermenting some tomatoes right now based on a previous SSM vid.! ❤ from Zone 8 in Washington state, USA.
Great info...thanks! 👍
What a fantastic little invention and maybe its something i might look into it...i also didn't realize you can put oranges in your compost!!
Ash never heard of composting or even compost? Where was she living, Australia? She finally is learning from the best.
She's a good spokes person.
I'm American that is awesome gardening thing to have.
I swear, I watch your channel to see if your going to wrestle a cabbage to the ground or sneak up on a carrot.
It is good to care about nature but quit playing with snakes, we can't loose another Aussie.
I know that is probley wrong but I thought it was funny.
I really do enjoy the channel...
This year was my first year gardening in 7 years.
I bought a 6 pack of purple Cherokee tomato plant's on clearance in July and fell in love.
I killed 4 of them.
So far it's still too hot here for them to bare fruit but I got flowers. I manly got them to grow for seeds next spring.
They are so tasty the ones I've had...
Then the next thing I know I'm growing mustards, turnips and brassica's of alll kinds and got a compost bin.
Had my first harvest of bok choy last week and made Tom Kha Soup.
Thank you for for channel!
I'm insecure about my gardening and some of us just need a little reassuring and insparation.
Good to see you again. I really like that you support new products and give them a go. I agree with you that I am not techie either. To be honest that is a long time to wait for that little bit of compost. Especially for the price. The technology is impressive though. 👍
You're right,
composting does take time!
But...
The thing about making your own compost is the QUALITY is always SOOOO MUCH BETTER
when you've made it at home.
Especially when you consider the live microbes in the soil.
Bagged compost may not be expensive to buy,
however,
a lot of the original microbes have died off while sitting in that bag.
By the time you've gotten it home, while yes, it's still a good product,
it's not nearly as good and effective as compost that you've just moved from your own growing stash.
As for the time it takes,
well, once you START composting, it simply continues!
And then you've always got compost ready to be added to the garden.
I look at it this way-
If I set it up, it basically works on its own while I'm off doing other things.
If I never set it up,
I'm still off doing other things,
and then I ALSO don't have any compost!
AND
At home, there's zero plastic bags involved.
Either way,
time is marching on,
I may as well let it work in my favor.
Plus, it's always better when it's homemade.
AND
I don't have to be concerned about any pesticides or herbicides that might be hiding in it.
Which has been a problem in commercially grown soil & compost.
All good reasons for making your own compost vs. buying it.👍
Hey mark!, i have a compost tumbler and a compost bay the bay is for fall leaves and grass clippings
Excellent 🎉
With any citrus in compost, halving or quartering the fruit assists in decomposition. Putting fruit etc, through a shredder /mulcher accelerates decomp /compost.
That´s so cool!! 👏👏👏
i love this one!
Sounds great. I bought one.
This would be great in pot plants, to make sure they dont overheat in their pots, know the moisture levels ect.
Just way out of my price range.
What a brilliant device! I live in an-a large, beautiful apartment with large balconies, to be fair, buuuut I don’t want to start a compost on my balconies, although I’d love to compost 😢 someday perhaps. Thanks for the info!
Good morning Mark! You are sounding so much better than the last time we heard from you! This sounds like something that would appeal to someone who is into stats and figures, so thanks, but no thanks. I'm more of an old school put the leaves and clippings in a pile and leave it (or bury it) gardener. I'm sure Monty has its appeal.
Ash had a great way of explaining and showcasing how composting with Monty works. Did you compost with similar materials in a different bin, tumbler, or stall?
Aww thank you so much! Being on camera is not as easy as Mark makes it look 😂 We just did the one bin together but Mark has heaps of different kinds going - he's a compost king!
Thanks for showing off a native Ozzy (Ozzie?) technology. I'm always a fan of numbers, and ignoring numbers, so I'm excited to see a new bit of flash to help me learn more about the things happening on our land.
Ozzy or Ozzie or Aussie? They all work 😅 Thank you so much for the comment!
Love the video. I can't believe there is a Valley Gurl type of Aussie. XD LOVE it!
I will admit to a slightly annoying Aussie accent 😅
I didn’t say it was annoying. Just that I loved it. It’s different. ❤
Short shorts game on point y'all
The probe could do with being longer for bigger piles, but looks good.👍🤠
Thanks for the comment! We have definitely found that's the case and have started looking into making a longer probe, hopefully something for the next release 😄
Hi Mark. Great video and awesome product. I live in beautiful South Australia, I want to have a compost bin in my back yard. Two concerns. I have a neighbour on the north side fence with bedroom Windows, I get sunrise in the morning from the east and sunset in the West. The South side of the yard can not be used for no space. I don't have any shade on on the other sides. What would be my next best option for placement for the bin. Or can I use some green shade cloth off the fence to cover the bin a little. Cheers Kate.
I loved seeing your skink friend! I have loads of five-lined skinks in my garden in Midwest USA and they seem to be a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Plus, I think they eat insect and gastropod pests! I hope yours decides to stick around!
As a tech geek gardener myself, loved to see the innovation. Sounds like it’s using something like the dnp3 protocol for data transfer? Ash if you’re about i’d love to hear. I implemented it over an industrial radio network once.
What a great question! I'd love to chat more about all the tech specs and go into detail about this so if you could send a question on our website it would be great to hear from you 😃
Cool idea. Expensive for someone like me. But I love seeing people make stuff like this.
Thank you
I would love one
