Since my dad died unexpectedly 2 years ago, i now am my 94 year old grandma's main caregiver/bff. About a week after dad's funeral, i started realizing she was basically alone all day everyday and grieving too so i started just showing up most days. We grieved together and i took over taking care of her like dad did. She gave me a purpose when i needed one most. Heading there in an hour or so to help cook supper. Hot dogs tonight. Saturday night is my night to stay over and Sundays we cook Sunday dinner and i clean and do laundry. Yes it's hard work but she's worth it..
You are a blessing and serving her is God's way. I raised 5 kids alone. Now I serve my oldest with Autism, and my other four don't care. Three are prodigals. Complete silence. One missing in action. At 65 I know what caring for the elderly is like. I served my grandparents and then my mother. I don't understand this culture now. I rely on God for strength, endurance, and life in general.
Join a Senior Activities Center or move near one if necessary. Ours has a pool, excellent exercise equipment, a library, craft/painting rooms, gym/exercise rooms, ping pong pickleball courts, and pool tables, and serves lunch. Medicare supplement insurance pays for it. Very well attended where you can make friends and socialize as much or as little as you like. You can volunteer there too.
It truly is. Also, if you have lost your partner, husband, wife. Many of those friends drop you, I do understand, many feel uncomfortable not having the other present as before. If they were capable of realizing how hard it is for the one that’s left. They never know when their time is next.

My youngest son lived in my town. He visited every Sunday and dropped in occasionally during the week. He died last summer’23 of cancer. I miss him so much. His girlfriend visits some now. I am thankful for that. I will miss him until I die!
My only relative is my son. He is busy working, and going out with friends,never got married. I am getting old.I spend times in my garden,taking care of my cats, going out to the senior center for lunch,yoga ,dances ,etc.Life is not what it used to be when I was young. What is Going to happen? I don’t know.Do I worry about it ? Not yet. I just thank God that I am still able to take care of myself and be up and about.I don’t know for how long.
Acceptance when your body starts to deteriorate and sending signs is time to go. Journey over, graciously accept it. Hopefully you lived a good and fulfilling life. So enjoy the departure with grace and acceptance.
I am 73 yrs old. I never married, I have no children, no grand-children. I have 3 siblings that never call me. When we spoke it is because I called them. I came from a very dysfunctional narcissistic family. (I am the scapegoat.) I cannot begin to tell you how seriously painful loneliness is. I go days without seeing or speaking to a human being. I live in Utah, I am a Mormon. Everything evolves around family. Individuals like me have no place or value in my religion. Sometimes I worry that in my younger days I was just as selfish. Maybe now I am living my payback.
Young people in droves are rejecting their parents, never talking to them, even keeping them from seeing their grandchildren. It's like a cult-- seems fashionable to them to ignore their parents. Our society has deteriorated to a deplorably heartless state.
It's hard when your family doesn't even care, call, text, visit, holidays, nothing. And they live close by. Isn't there a commandment about honoring, loving your parents? That would apply to all aged family members. Too busy?? They'll have their turn.

I just came across this video in April of 2024, I can't help wondering if your grandmother still alive? She is a wonderful sharp woman and I hope he was able or is able to find some happiness and friendship. I live outside Scotia New York in the Albany area, I work in senior buildings and I see all the time these poor senior citizens who have family that never come to visit them, I see pictures on the walls I hear the stories and I see the devastation that occurs because their family can't take the time to visit or include them in things. Loneliness is a killer, there is no excuse if you have an aging family member to spend time with them, because just remember this, one day it's going to be you!
Many lunch clubs were closed due to government funding cuts.. I volunteered for years at one.. Twice a week.. We played records.. Bingo..laughed. Talked.. Did day trips.. It was great for them.. Im afraid many when they get old are put to one side like a once loved toy.. And easily forgotten about.
My MIL lives in an independent senior living center. She is surrounded by several hundred people her age, but does not really want to participate in any social activities. She does go down to all of the meals, so she eats with others every day. But very little beyond that. And complains so much about being lonely. This loneliness epidemic is more than just not having people around. We also have a crisis of antisocial people in our country.
Easy to say BUT "It's (Senior Housing) like a box of Chocolate"...you don't know what type PLACE or NEIGHBOR you'll get... With all disfunction/acting out in World today...do you think that disappears when a person get OLDER ?!🤔
I am a Senior whose brother cares less about me. My daughter lives far away. Calls once in a blue moon and has her hands full with her own family. I am not lonely, but wish my family would help more financially. They are pretty well off but don't even offer when they know I am having a difficult time of it trying to make ends meet.. It hurts emotionally.
Sometimes, you have to come right out and ask. I have sisters, thankfully, and if I need it, they give it. It works the other way too. We all have something to offer, in exchange for what we need. I hope you do ask.

Same thing with my brother. He boasts about going to take a trip around the world but he cares less about me. It goes way back to when I was born. He claims he was forgotten about after I was born. That I was the center of our parents attention and he got the shaft after that. I feel sad for him. His feelings on this matter came as a complete shock to me.
When I moved to uk it seemed to me like no body wanna talk. They're not even bothered to even smile or say hello in reply especially younger people more arrogant but older people tend to be more polite n cheerful. So at the end I gave up n now I keep my eyes down while walking on road becoz people often try to avoid eye contact I thought better to co operate with them.
We’re living in a changing time. I’m the only child. When I was there years old, I had seizures my parents and I were very close. I had three cousins that lived next door to me. We played together. And when I was home I just played to myself. I was very active in the church. After my dad passed away in 1983 it was just me and my mother. I got married the same year my dad passed. My wife and I had two children a girl and a boy. My daughter went to college and my son was home with me. My wife and I got divorced and I had custody of the children. After my son left it was just me and my mother. She had a stroke and everything fell on me to do. I done all the cooking, cleaning etc. I changed and dressed my mother washed her everything. She passed in 2011 at the age of 90. In 2019 I. Fell and broke my right hip. Had hip surgery and now I can walk around. I stayed with my cousin while I was getting better. Then my daughter came one day and told me she and her husband were buying a house and I was going to live with them. Since I’ve been with them I feel left out. They don’t talk to me or anything. I’m all to myself. I talk to myself I feel no one cares about me. All she wants is what I pay for staying with them. I never done my parents like that. I can’t believe it but it’s true.
I imagine there are local church pantries that would be willing to help him as well. The problem is getting those willing to help together with those who need help. An app is a nice start, but realize that many elderly people don’t have smart phones nor could afford the cost of upkeep. The best thing someone could do for those like him in need would be to send out mailers a few times a yr. That list resources and phone numbers to reach them. There are often free home health services who will do shopping for people as well as help them clean etc.
This is gonna be ME in 20 years. I told my ex husband that we both need to take better care of ourselves and he needs to quit smoking cause neither of us have anybody whose gonna care for us as we age. I wanna be like the doctor who delivered me; he retired on his 82nd birthday and rode his bike to the hospital everyday to make his rounds-- until he got hit by a car when he was 79!
Your story is pretty silly. The doctor worked until his 82nd birthday, despite having been dead since he was 79. Smokers almost always explain their habit by mentioning that other people got hit by a car or truck.

Fortunately I live in apartments for seniors. I am in good health and still drive. I live right next to a senior activity center. They serve breakfast and lunch and have activities. There's free transportation to appointments and shopping. But I live in a big city.
There is a difference between lonely and alone. Alone is when you do not have any bonds with people but you have people around. Lonely is about not having people's company and still have people's love for you. I am alone and I hate to be alone.
You know it's so true after your old your kids or your grandkids do not visit and only care about themselves. I can see more and more people using their savings to go on cruises and living in very nice retirement villages with happy hour by their own choice. Kids don't care about their parents and the parents don't need to care about their kids.
Sometimes children go out of their way for friends, but not for parents and siblings!! It really hurts whenever you have visited in every home your brother lived in, but he and his wife have never visited in your home!
Loneliness and depression is often thought of as a normal process of aging when it really isn't. Life's definitely better when you can share your experiences and challenges with someone. Researches have also shown that great social relationships have fewer negative experiences. Although meeting up in person have been challenging recently due to the global pandemic, hanging out with your friends can now be done virtually just like we do in Reviving Mind's programs.
I never thought about this until I got older. At 67, I have lost almost all my friends already. I had 4 pass away in ONE year...it is depressing and I've had to be proactive in finding new relationships and motivation to thrive

Having a very small family is a major problem, it’s lonely for old people but stressful for younger members still working and trying to live their younger life before they are old themselves.
Seniors, especially widows and some widowers, don't have kids, or no caring kids, who take them in or care for them. Society shrinks to perhaps to church and the check out at the grocery store. Many places, especially rural, don't have Senior Citizen Centers, because towns don't focus on them. And they should. They pay the taxes.
After a highway accident in the 80 s and 6 years of marriage everything went out the window. She left and it hurt for years and left a bad taste in my mouth for the ladies. I'm 70 come September and I never really trusted or let myself go even though I met some perfect women who even hunted. I felt like I was cheating on the x so I just gave up. .Yes indeed I've never been with a lady for 30 years. You just learn to live with it. Maybe tomorrow. TKS.

I used to watch my mother just sit in her apartment and not go out I am now a senior and I volunteer at a church or I volunteer at a food pantry I'm always busy doing something if I don't have a car I take public transportation I go down to the nearest Council on Aging we don't need to be lonely we choose how to enrich our lives I pray that older people understand they need to get going in life they still have a lot of Life to Live
I am almost 69 and so busy I crave my alone time! I think it’s up to the person to keep busy! But I realize with more and more health issues, it’s tougher. I think it’s just a part of life as we get older…sadly.

The thing today is young ones alone are suffering too. Just from comments I have read online on threads. Admittedly a lot of elderly can't use the internet which would make them bored and lonely. It's stress too with most. It's very hard when those say 70 plus have friends or family die. Health is so important but many deteriorate. It's so vital to repent of sin (all humans) and commit to Jesus (not religions) for life on earth and eternal life and walk with Him daily. I'm an oldie now and life is uncertain for oldies. We are the final generation now though. For people who have a big enough home with a spare room they should take in an elderly person (not for money but to be kind). It could give an oldie a new lease on life (concerning loneliness) and perhaps rescue of a homeless person. In a place in England they have a buddy system where people match up with an older person to talk each week or play a board game which is a good idea. They visit the elderly person.

Some women are sleeping with several men at the same time and men stay on there for years and sleep with anything with no intention of looking for someone. Sicko married couples too get a buzz in seeing their partner get 'hits' and sleep with others. So called christian sites are absolutely not remotely christian. Also people with mental issues, women and men, have what look like nice profiles but they are hiding the truth. Some are psychopaths (men and women), anorexics, all sorts. Actually 2 of my relatives were on dating sites but left.
I tried dating sites several times already, without success. Then I saw a video on RUclips about how to create the "perfect" profil. You get the advice to manipulate and exaggerate with all kind of positive looking measures. But so you don't see the real person you are dealing with, just a nice image. And don't mention all the scammers. - I was actually looking for a person with special needs I would like to take care of, no matter what kind of handicap (I am not a psycho!!). I received many messages from people who "needed" money. Some added an "apparent" picture from themself, but it was a picture taken out of a magazine for disable people, as proof for their need of money.
1:39 Unfortunately Seniors are not the only pitifully lonely, as this is every age group suffering. Many of those coming to you? Can you trust them, this is the same problem with younger people. People carry bedbugs, roaches, worst of all sticky fingers. You have no idea who is casing your place. The freakiest are dating apps. that person could be anyone using another’s picture. You have no idea what someone is capable of. Meeting in person.

I constantly need to remind myself to, not dwell on the problem, there are solutions and there is a power in this Universe that we can tap into if we just ask for guidance. It’s hard when you have serious health problems! I was very active in church. I taught Sunday School, taught Children’s Church, played piano for church and was a soloists. Now I’m old and am no longer able to continue doing it. It was time to make way for the younger generation.
Instead of coming up with more ways to help out seniors this country ignores elders and as for doctors, well all they want to do is keep dolling out meds particularly antidepressants so they don't complain about being alone. People just don't care about elders anymore.

They're not even bothered to even smile or say hello in reply especially younger people more arrogant but older people tend to be more polite n cheerful. So at the end I gave up n now I keep my eyes down while walking on road becoz people often try to avoid eye contact I thought better to co operate with them.
We’re living in a changing time. I’m the only child. When I was there years old, I had seizures my parents and I were very close. I had three cousins that lived next door to me. We played together. And when I was home I just played to myself. I was very active in the church. After my dad passed away in 1983 it was just me and my mother. I got married the same year my dad passed. My wife and I had two children a girl and a boy. My daughter went to college and my son was home with me. My wife and I got divorced and I had custody of the children. After my son left it was just me and my mother. She had a stroke and everything fell on me to do. I done all the cooking, cleaning etc. I changed and dressed my mother washed her everything. She passed in 2011 at the age of 90. In 2019 I. Fell and broke my right hip. Had hip surgery and now I can walk around. I stayed with my cousin while I was getting better. Then my daughter came one day and told me she and her husband were buying a house and I was going to live with them. Since I’ve been with them I feel left out. They don’t talk to me or anything. I’m all to myself. I talk to myself I feel no one cares about me. All she wants is what I pay for staying with them. I never done my parents like that. I can’t believe it but it’s true.

I imagine there are local church pantries that would be willing to help him as well. The problem is getting those willing to help together with those who need help. An app is a nice start, but realize that many elderly people don’t have smart phones nor could afford the cost of upkeep. The best thing someone could do for those like him in need would be to send out mailers a few times a yr. That list resources and phone numbers to reach them. There are often free home health services who will do shopping for people as well as help them clean etc.

Your story is pretty silly. The doctor worked until his 82nd birthday, despite having been dead since he was 79. Smokers almost always explain their habit by mentioning that other people got hit by a car or truck.

Fortunately I live in apartments for seniors. I am in good health and still drive. I live right next to a senior activity center. They serve breakfast and lunch and have activities. There's free transportation to appointments and shopping. But I live in a big city.
There is a difference between lonely and alone. Alone is when you do not have any bonds with people but you have people around. Lonely is about not having people's company and still have people's love for you. I am alone and I hate to be alone.

You know it's so true after your old your kids or your grandkids do not visit and only care about themselves. I can see more and more people using their savings to go on cruises and living in very nice retirement villages with happy hour by their own choice. Kids don't care about their parents and the parents don't need to care about their kids.
Sometimes children go out of their way for friends, but not for parents and siblings!! It really hurts whenever you have visited in every home your brother lived in, but he and his wife have never visited in your home!

Loneliness and depression is often thought of as a normal process of aging when it really isn't. Life's definitely better when you can share your experiences and challenges with someone. Researches have also shown that great social relationships have fewer negative experiences. Although meeting up in person have been challenging recently due to the global pandemic, hanging out with your friends can now be done virtually just like we do in Reviving Mind's programs.
I never thought about this until I got older. At 67, I have lost almost all my friends already. I had 4 pass away in ONE year...it is depressing and I've had to be proactive in finding new relationships and motivation to thrive

Having a very small family is a major problem, it’s lonely for old people but stressful for younger members still working and trying to live their younger life before they are old themselves.

Seniors, especially widows and some widowers, don't have kids, or no caring kids, who take them in or care for them. Society shrinks to perhaps to church and the check out at the grocery store. Many places, especially rural, don't have Senior Citizen Centers, because towns don't focus on them. And they should. They pay the taxes.
Millions of younger aged and old and even active age is living alone
After a highway accident in the 80 s and 6 years of marriage everything went out the window. She left and it hurt for years and left a bad taste in my mouth for the ladies. I'm 70 come September and I never really trusted or let myself go even though I met some perfect women who even hunted. I felt like I was cheating on the x so I just gave up. .Yes indeed I've never been with a lady for 30 years. You just learn to live with it. Maybe tomorrow. TKS.

So many people put them in nursing homes and forget the parents and grandparents in the nursing home because themselves.
I did ask and I got turned down. I think my daughter lacks empathy.

I used to watch my mother just sit in her apartment and not go out I am now a senior and I volunteer at a church or I volunteer at a food pantry I'm always busy doing something if I don't have a car I take public transportation I go down to the nearest Council on Aging we don't need to be lonely we choose how to enrich our lives I pray that older people understand they need to get going in life they still have a lot of Life to Live

Sorry but I get frantic for someone to hear and maybe look at all my documents or just here my story and to know if she alive...I don't want her to die thinking I sold all her things houses and did not want her ..she's my only mom I love her for taken care of me ..she' had everything I could ever.wsnt exstra or never wanted it was there ..she was there and my father was the best only father I miss him s much he died massive heart attack. We are the final generation now though. For people who have a big enough home with a spare room they should take in an elderly person (not for money but to be kind). It could give an oldie a new lease on life (concerning loneliness) and perhaps rescue of a homeless person. In a place in England they have a buddy system where people match up with an older person to talk each week or play a board game which is a good idea. They visit the elderly person.

@@ferdystoehr1317...speaking of dating sites, my relative was on a dating site. It's also a place men and women delight in sleeping with nearly everyone on those sites. Some women are sleeping with several men at the same time and men stay on there for years and sleep with anything with no intention of looking for someone. Sicko married couples too get a buzz in seeing their partner get 'hits' and sleep with others. So called christian sites are absolutely not remotely christian. Also people with mental issues, women and men, have what look like nice profiles but they are hiding the truth. Some are psychopaths (men and women), anorexics, all sorts. Actually 2 of my relatives were on dating sites but left.
I tried dating sites several times already, without success. Then I saw a video on RUclips about how to create the "perfect" profil. You get the advice to manipulate and exaggerate with all kind of positive looking measures. But so you don't see the real person you are dealing with, just a nice image. And don't mention all the scammers. - I was actually looking for a person with special needs I would like to take care of, no matter what kind of handicap (I am not a psycho!!). I received many messages from people who "needed" money. Some added an "apparent" picture from themself, but it was a picture taken out of a magazine for disable people, as proof for their need of money.

I constantly need to remind myself to, not dwell on the problem, there are solutions and there is a power in this Universe that we can tap into if we just ask for guidance. It's easy to become active in a local church.
It’s hard when you have serious health problems! I was very active in church. I taught Sunday School, taught Children’s Church, played piano for church and was a soloists. Now I’m old and am no longer able to continue doing it. It was time to make way for the younger generation.
I love being in church and singing. I love to hear the pastor speak. I love the Word of GOD!
Instead of coming up with more ways to help out seniors this country ignores elders and as for doctors, well all they want to do is keep dolling out meds particularly antidepressants so they don't complain about being alone. People just don't care about elders anymore.
