      @@kenkarish826 In ten years of US Navy service, I stood more shipboard and shore-station security watches than I could ever remember. On all of those watches I carried an unloaded semi-automatic pistol in a holster on my belt with two full magazines in a separate pouch. If the watch conditions required it, I carried a Thompson submachine gun and two loaded magazines. The conditions never got out of hand and they were only actually fired at the target range but don't ever think those sailors, soldiers, marines, or airmen on watch are just there for decoration.

    People laugh about the XBOX controller but just think if the Navy had gone to Raytheon or General Dynamics and asked them to design a periscope controller. They would have come up with the exact same thing but it would cost $3 Million dollars.

    • @JohnY-lw3ys
      @JohnY-lw3ys Год назад +60

      Only the ignorant peolple would laugh at this. The issue with custom made stuff is that not only you have to pay an exorbitant amount for it, but also you have to carry spare parts and you are dependent on the manufacturer to deliver. Having off the shelf items that you can mofify them slightly to do the job is priceless. No matter where you are in the world, you will find an XBOX controller and I am sure they have some in their recreation room. After all they are made from the same chips and software that the custom controllers would have been made. Besides it shows great ingenuity. Kudos to whoever thought using it.

    • @electrofelon
      @electrofelon Год назад +4

      The benefit that Raytheon or GD provide is that there would have been 100 engineers put to that task. And over-engineered it to death. BUT they have spare parts, engineering on call, they can’t discontinue the product or go out of business. They have the intense knowledge of the product and could most likely resolve any issues with the equipment very quickly.
      With an Xbox controller you’d be depending on Microsoft to support any issues, with relatively low knowledge of the defense industry.

    Great video. I served aboard 3 subs back in the late 70's to mid 80's, loved it, great crews and great food. Back then all enlisted had to learn how to "drive the boat" with the stern planes and bow planes as part of our quals. Now they use X Box controllers, wow. Main reason I got out was sub life can be hard on a marriage. I always make time to talk to other submariners when I see they are wearing something identifying as such. Ran into 2 different shipmates 25 and 30 years later where I live at now. Thanks to all who serve.

    Back in the 80s my family had a two week vacation on Oahu. We went to Pearl Harbor and my dad, who was an Air Force colonel, got permission for us to get a personal tour from the XO of a Los Angelas-class attack submarine over in the sub pens, the USS New York City. I still remember it today even though I was a kid back then. One thing I remember the XO telling us is that everyone on the ship had to pass a test where they had to wear a blacked-out hood and make their way from one end of the ship to other based solely on feel and memory of the ship layout. Idea was in the event of fire and smoke obstructing vision, you needed to know how to navigate ship without sight.

    My time in the Navy was spent in a seaplane patrol squadron based in San Diego and the far east. The only time I was ever on a sub was a tour of the USS Clamagore, an old submarine that was moored at Patriots Point, SC. Forget about serving on a sub if you have claustrophobia. While touring the Clamagore I couldn’t wait to get off as my claustrophobia kicked in. Just watching the guy in this video crawl through a torpedo tube all the way to the end had me breathing heavy. Much respect and admiration to the guys and gals that serve on these “boats” as they’re pretty much considered close to the top of the Navy elite food chain. Well done video.

The captain and his XO are very friendly and approachable, answering all dumb questions in the most well-mannered state. Classified screens are turned-off, and weapon systems are covered-up in very tasteful way, without having to blur out the details like you would normally see in other videos. It's a beautiful place but remembering the past and looking around and seeing the same places that were being attacked in 1941 was definitely a bit unsettling. I was assigned there in 1975 & 1976. Even before I was assigned to a ship that was home ported there I read a lot of history regarding that attack and the period before December 7, 1941.
