I also wanna say that back on Earth when Benny asks Dean why he saved his life and Dean doesnt reply and it cuts to the flashback of Benny saving Cas's life in Purgatory when Dean was pinned down. So much is conveyed about Dean's priorities and emotions by that simple scene.
I don't know about a romantic love between Dean and Benny but I do know that the first 5 lines they speak to each other are gay jokes and sexual innuendo for some reason SPN was a insane show

1. However people choose to see it, purgatory rally seemed to be driving the subtext in deep. Every interaction Dean had with others seemed to suggest they knew just how important Cas was to him. I think it's kind of telling when, Dean was cornering that werewolf/vampire ( whatever he was) and he demanded to know where " THE Angel" was. But when he finally got an answer, Cas was referred to as Dean's angel ( " you'll find YOUR angel there"). I don't know if this was meant to be clear subtext or something they hadn't realized had become subtext ( because THAT happens way too often). I mean, at least it was clear from Cas' side how he felt, and I think that even if it didn't click with Dean, it clicked once Benny saw how Cas was acting around Dean. He probably caught on to it, but it probably wasn't necessarily because of Dean's desperation. People like to say that this was clear evidence that Dean was in love with Cas, but to me, it seemed like Cas was probably the reason it seemed like most creatures, including Benny were able to see it. 2. The banter was my favorite part of that. Sometimes I forget that even though Cas has spent a considerable amount of time on earth and around both Sam and Dean at this point, there's still a lot he doesn't get or understand. And it's all these small things that don't really matter but are still hilarious. Him and Benny were such an unexpected duo that I was disappointed I didn't get to see more of. I hated that they killed Benny off so soon. There was literally no reason for it to happen, and they could have found a way around it. He would be such a cool character to have as a regular. I swear this show kills all the good characters off way too soon, especially the villains that just make this turnaround and then don't get to have a redemption arc barely at all. ( thinking about Meg.. and Ketch) 3. I forgot how fucking AWESOME the fight before they get to the portal is. I don't know, seems similar to most fight scenes I guess, but for some reason I just really love how it looked. 4. Video idea. The second purgatory visit. And Dean's prayer to Cas. Although you'll probably touch on that at some point, but a lot of people claim this was Dean's " coming out" or Dean's confession to Cas and the comment Cas made later about him not having to explain something unsaid? Would be interesting to hear your opinions on that.

I love how everything in purgatory has that sense of urgency and desperation. it feels so alive with every facial expression a gesture. i love it. i don't think any other part of the show capture that quite as well.
Oh wow I totally thought there was something with Benny, even if it was just one-sided. But when Cas and Benny would argue, I thought it clearly seemed like they were fighting over Dean.
@@kara_keegan_2242 But I don't rule out the possibility of Dean having an interest that he didn't have the courage to pursue...That's what the subtext tells me 🤷
My favorite part of the scene where Benny saves Cas is that, in the trajectory of the Purgatory scenes, it really looks like this is the moment Dean changed his mind about Benny and began trusting him in earnest. Just before that fight, Dean was being cynical and untrusting towards Benny as a vampire, leading to Benny's exasperated (and probably already said before) argument that no, he really didn't hurt humans and doesn't plan to in the future. They cut to a reaction shot of Dean after Benny saves Cas, and there's a change in his expression--this happening really affects him, and next thing you know in the following Purgatory scene he's saying that Benny "earned" Dean's trust. Now, that could and probably does mean many things--Benny coming through with the information on the portal being correct, having fought with Dean for pretty much a year now--but the way it's cut together, it seems that saving Cas specifically had a huge impact on Dean's opinion of Benny. Saving Dean and fighting with him had never impacted Dean's doubts or pessimism prior to that fight, and even though Benny's decision to save Cas was probably self serving, I don't think it really registered for Dean entirely that way. I think he probably saw that Benny would defend a person Dean cared about, even though it was technically detrimental to his own goals to have Cas alive, and Dean decided then and there that Benny was a person he could rely on.

I would love to have a video about Dean's drinking habits throughout the seasons. I am pretty sure there is a strong connection between how bad it goes and how much he drinks. Besides the anger this is his only means of coping 😔
Yeah you can really see that he drinks more after hell and when he’s grieving, whether it be because someone has died or because he has hit his limit. There’s probably also a connection to the type of booze he has but I’m not an alcohol aficionado - I know Dean mostly the cheap nasty stuff but sometimes there’s the more expensive kind right? Seasons 4 and 7 were times he drank copiously, if I remember correctly.
@@dawnmayflower4422 He uses alcohol to self-medicate his PTSD. He drank the most in season 4 after he got out of Hell and was full of fresh nightmares, than even more so in season 7 after he lost first Cas, and then Bobby, and then at the beginning of season 13 during the so-called "widower's arc" when Cas died and went into the Empty.
I loved your breakdown of the purgatory episode and I loved the dynamic between the three characters. My take is that Dean and Benny were 'soldiers in common' which gave the partnership a camaraderie which soldiers understand. Sam definitely would not have managed in such a situation. Whereas Dean - oddly enough this environment suited his character totally. I loved the character of Benny and the purgatory story could've run over several episodes and I would've been here for it. fighting for survival and possibly doing unspeakable things to stay alive without having someone question you or prick your conscious (which Sam would have done), must have been liberating for all that. But the reality is that once Benny told Dean there was a way out, he was going to take it of course once he found Cas. A solid episode and in some ways I'm sorry SPN doesn't really give a story-line a little more room to explore more fully interactions and consequences.

The rich depth of a “simple” concept is perfect. It was so well executed, and paced out, even without time cards. Benny is one of my favorite side characters as well; I just love his unique sincerity to everything. Along with that the dynamics amongst the characters are fascinating, and you did a fantasic job of identifying/describing where everyone’s headspace was at throughout the journey. I think the whole Dean/Benny element was more just recent finale backlash of people saying, if your not going to follow through with the true narrative of the show then we’re going to say that Dean hooked up with every guy he ever interacted with (just my perspective on the situation).
Wondering what your head canon is for Dean’s alcoholism when he gets to Purgatory? For example does it get muted along with Dean’s need for sleep/food, does he actually detox at some point off camera that we simply do not see or do you have another theory?
I think he probably detoxed at some point. Though it's possible Cas like, took the worst of it healing him right when they landed. But it'd be a clear problem both here and when they were locked up after "trying to murder the president" in my view.

I'm currently rewatching the series and finishing season 9 right now. Watching season 8 and 9 back to back shows even more how absurd was Dean's decision to throw Cas from the bunker. It always felt out of character, but now it's even more annoying, like they ereased his core, I guess. But there are poeple on ff.net already fixing season 9, aren't they? ;) Name change that showed in my notifications was unexpected but not unwelcome, I'd say. It was great to rewatch the clips and hear your thoughts on the dynamics between the guys. I can't find a sentence that I could argue with. Purgatory is one of my favourite parts from the entire series and I can only hope that there is unreleased footage waiting to catch us all off guard. Let girl dream... I would love to hear your analysis of how relationship between Sam and Cas is changing throughout the seasons, if you'd be interested in doing it. I just love how from one point it's Sam who stands up for Cas almost every time and brings some stability for him when Dean is not being much of a support.
I don't know how hard it was for Dean to leave Cas at Garth's house, it could have been a great duo, but he preferred to leave him to survive alone. To him, an angel who had no idea how to put a voicemail (I don't speak English very well, sorry if there are mistakes; ()
When this season first aired I really didn't like Benny because the way he was presented was so sketchy to me, I didn't trust him one bit and was just waiting for a betrayal. So by the end I was just surprised when that didn't happen and kinda couldn't retroactively start liking him, I was actually surprised how many people loved him and even shipped him with Dean. To me the scenes he had just weren't enough for that, but I do like him a lot better on rewatch now that I know he's not actually shady.
For me, Benny doesn't feel like someone to ship Dean with, but he does feel like a queer friendship. Like "yeah, we're messed up in a similar way, so we gotta help each other out AND make stupid gay jokes while doing it". I can attest to it being like that in my own friend group.
About Purgatory - and Spn in generaI. I lacked the visuals of monsters, their essence. Almost all monsters have human form. And I understand - this is a cover (or simply the human eye is not able to perceive the essence and visualizes as best it can). But damn it! I remember how s1-3 scared me to the point of shivers down my spine. But the further into the forest - the more firewood and the monsters became wilder...but not scarier. In Purgatory, I was hoping, sorry, to freak out, because all those creatures took their own form there, and Dean, technically, was able to see them without circumstances (at least I think so). But, again, the leviaphens shoved up in black gull and immediatelly transformed....into a people... Okey maybe human eye can't handle their fir in Purgatory too...fine
I have mixed feelings about Benny. I did like him but I don’t know if I say he was my top 10 I do love that later on he does the ultimate sacrifice for Dean by saving Sam. It was sad too. There is definitely no doubt that some of my favorite scenes really are between Cas and Benny. I love to Purgatory too. I wish it had been a little longer and I really love it later on when it comes back in I definitely didn’t get the feeling that Dean and Benny had any kind of romantic feelings either. Nothing would convince me of that either I do think if I remember right that they do mention each other once each but that’s it Bernie ask about Cas after they get out and says he’s sorry. Also, doesn’t Cas mention Benny in season 15 when they go back. I do love you three dynamics of them too. They all are so great.
If you (person reading this) ship Destiel I'm not here to hate on your ship... So don't kill me for what I'm about to say. Castiel is such a --- terrible friend all time. Yes he means well and yes he cares (loves the Winchesters, particularly Dean) but a good heart can only take you so far and he keeps messing things up and hurting/betraying the ppl that care about him. Benny, IMO, was so much better for Dean and had the healthiest relationship Dean ever had. They deserved so much better. Both could have done so much more for the other if: 1. Sam hadn't been jealous and prejudicial shit against Benny 2. Benny hadn't kept his struggle so hidden. I know he tried to he could and should have been more open about his true feelings so Dean could do more for him 3. And lastly if they had more time. I truly believe Dean and Benny were in a relationship (like the script implies) and their breakup and Benny's death hurt Dean as deeply. Possibly at the top. Along with Sammy, Bobby and such.
I also liked Benny and Cas's moment of alliance in trying to convince Dean to leave Cas behind. I mean, here you've got two ancient beings, Cas being FAR OLDER but still, they are able to think logically and then you've got the smitten human, a baby in comparison, stamping his foot like "NO, CAS IS COMING!"

Yesss, a video on Sam and Cas would be awesome!!
I don't know how hard it was for Dean to leave Cas at Garth's house, it could have been a great duo, but he preferred to leave him to survive alone.
To him, an angel who had no idea how to put a voicemail
(I don't speak English very well, sorry if there are mistakes; ()
@@micaplacencia2030your English is perfect!
THIRTY MINUTES
blergh i though i was first, i was with liking it.....Loved it!
I love your video ❤️
But the further into the forest
- the more firewood and the monsters became wilder...but not scarier.
I like the copyright proofing😂
purgatory dean reminds me a lot of marked dean, taking dean into his base instincts
I wish it had been a little longer and I really love it later on when it comes back in I definitely didn’t get the feeling that
Dean and Benny had any kind of romantic feelings either. Nothing would convince me of that either
I do think if I remember right that they do mention each other once each but that’s it Bernie ask about Cas after they get out and says he’s sorry. Also, doesn’t Cas mention Benny in season 15 when they go back. I do love you three dynamics of them too. They all are so great.
Fuck, Benny's voice😳😳😳
Am i missing how this is a deep dive... all were doing is watching clips of the show....
I can watch the show for that..
Oh wait... you are a deangirl aren't you
Weeeee :D
Why do you people always try to make characters gay, when they're very clearly not? It's probably top 3 weirdest shit I've ever seen💁🏻♀️
Both could have done so much more for the other if:
1. Sam hadn't been jealous and prejudicial shit against Benny
2. Benny hadn't kept his struggle so hidden. I know he tried to he could and should have been more open about his true feelings so Dean could do more for him
3. And lastly if they had more time.
I truly believe Dean and Benny were in a relationship (like the script implies) and their breakup and Benny's death hurt Dean as deeply. Possibly at the top. Along with Sammy, Bobby and such.
