  • The Nobel Laureate economist Amartya Sen has posed the question, ‘equality of what?’ The value of equality depends on what standard is chosen. As ancient Greek thinkers recognized, equality can be deployed to exclude as well as to liberate, and its relationship to law and freedom needs to be interrogated.
If equal social freedom is a product of isonomia-the equal application of laws to all-those laws need to be free of systematic bias and command public respect.
This lecture was recorded by Melissa Lane on 7th March 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London

A great topic presented clearly by an very knowledgeable and experienced speaker. A pleasure to behold, and a much needed contrast to most content being generated by human kind.

Thank you! It is interesting to have concepts that appear self-evident be recontextualised so that new aspects become revealed. Hooray! 😊

Thanks for sharing. My question would be about how these Ancient Greek ideas affected early Christian thinking. I’ve read how Ancient Greek Philosophy had related a lot to early Christian thought/philosophy.

It is possible to say several things about equality. The problem is that each man builds a measure of himself and the people he interacts with throughout his life. And to make matters worse, we cannot forget that each of us is born into a society that has already created and tries to perpetuate the measurement scales that were used to structure society. And beneath the surface of this (often legal) structure are distorted scales of wealth-based measures and enduring biases that are historically passed down from father to son. Equality and equalization of people can be thought of in terms of education, wealth, social visibility, place of birth, language used, etc...But the truth is that there is no solution to this problem, as there will always be those who feel harmed because of some type of inequality. And the most toxic and violent people are those who wish to preserve and transmit the inequality that benefits them in a society marked by cultural, economic and political abysses. So the question is not how to make people equal but how to make them realize that inequalities are all temporary and illusory because we are equally mortal. I think that the foolish belief in the inevitability of inequality and/or in the need for absolute equality (something biologically and culturally impossible) are the raw materials that gave and still give rise to the infernal deities that have equally tormented the minds of all human beings since they began. living in communities.

there is no difference deriving ἰσονομία from νόμος or νέμω, both are different formations from the same root.

"It's always NOW" for everyone everywhere-when all-ways all-at-once here-now-forever universally, how effectively equal can it be for continuous creation cause-effect.
Democracy in accordance with this empirical law by default is only possible where-when applied if/then understood, emulated and be-cause-effect is/of self-defining mutually responsible management becomes balanced health and welfare services metastability, a holistic Singularity-point organism.
