I think my favorite thing about Poretta's performance here is that you can see that feint tinge of dread circling him in his eyes in small moments of defeat. Like around the line "The rules of ordinary reality don't apply here", and he takes that small pause to look into the camera longingly as if alone and deeply depressed, only to be interrupted by the reinvigorating resolve for his pursuit of knowledge for why the world is making him feel that way. He really is such a refreshing character perspective to have in the Alan Wake story. With Alan, Tom, Saga, Alice, and Dr. Darling all in the Dark Place it is interesting to see how different people cope with the same emotional landscape that the Dark Place represents and it really helps flesh out the metaphor within it and breathes more depth to what it means for the audience. I really hope they don't throw away Dr Darling as a "bit" character I really think he has lots of layers worth mining and diving into. Why did he dedicate his life to his work, what drives him, what about his personality speaks to the human experience in the face of the dread that the dark place represents within our own feelings of inadequacies and how we cope, what is sciences relationship with the human collective experience, etc. And I think Dr. Darling really fills in a triangle that Alan and Saga don't cover. Alan is detached from the world as an artist but driven by emotional landscapes to build a world, Saga is trying to preserve the old one because of her attachments to it, and now Dr. Darling is seeking a new one and the desire to understand why things work the way they do. All of them find something specific about the experience that acts as their shadow, but also as their virtue. Saga is grounded and can find herself even in the darkest place because she knows what she is. Alan loses himself because he can be so much through his empathy. Dr. Darling has to funnel it all through a series of rules and logic that doesn't exist and therefor has to adapt his understanding of the ruleset of nature to this new truth of the lack of truth. If the Dark Place is this collective unconscious (much like the Oldest House) I love how he continues to struggle to find the LAWS of a space that reacts to laws and in turn modifies their meaning. Like any symbol in the real world the knowledge of its meaning unravels it and eventually divorces it from the rules that presented it in the first place. A cow is no longer a cow, and through human storytelling and ingenuity becomes a house of so much more meaning. It's a place beyond reason and in turn is modified by context and therefor the scientific method doesn't apply in the same way because every test modifies the data. Im really hoping he's a main feature of Alan Wake 3 or at least Control 2. I also think his almost naive blissful pursuit of the new allows him to be the center of that source of dread and despair that makes the horror of this world...like a light in the darkness that acts as a lure for a greater monster.
The “but who’s the dreamer” line is straight out of Twin Peaks: The Return, which already had a massive influence on AW2. Can’t fucking wait to play NG+, thanks for the upload.
@aussieseal9979 Night Springs is based off of The Twilight Zone, the original series from the 1960s. The narrator sounds like Rod Serling. The "who's the dreamer" directly references a Night Springs episode from the first Alan Wake game. There are plenty of Twin Peaks references in the game, but this one is only a happy accident because it aligns with stuff from AW1 which came out before Twin Peaks: The Return.
@@ronniewhitedxJesse has never gone to the Dark Place though. That cameo we saw was a callback to when she tried contacting Alan during the AWE DLC. Jesse and Langston remark that the signal from Alan came from some point in the future (time works differently in the Dark Place, which would explain Jesse receiving a 2023 message from Alan in 2019 when Control is set).

"Spiral to a more favorable condition" is an interesting way to word it.
So Tor, Odin, Alice and Casper can feel the shift of the Dark Place. ( they all are in it. By their own will )

Pretty sure he ascended to a level, where he can traverse different dimensions, he probably got stuck in the Dark Place along his way
Holy shit this is awesome
Curious where Casper is, it was sort of implied that he went with Polaris to... somewhere.
Ong I love him so much xD
Could Alan Wake be Casper's alter ego like how Mr. Scratch is Alan's and Max Payne is Casey's?? But what about about Thomas Zane?!?! AHHHHH
Good luck with that. I still don’t fully understand how is it that wake and Zane look identical.
So this is what happened after he fed himself to Hedron?
This complicates things even more than i thoughts it would. Alan looks like Zane, but he also sounds like dr. Darling???? What does this all MEAN???
yes :P
