  • This is my NOVA Watercolour Markers review, my first go with them - straight from the packet! I examine two sets of 10 watercolour markers, Colours and Neutrals, from the NOVA brand, sharing some basic techniques, colour swatches and how to use watercolour brush markers. The second part of the video is a watercolour markers tutorial as I show you how to use watercolour markers to create a mussel shell art painting with the the bright colours and brush tips!
    Thanks to the folks at Trimcraft for sending me these watercolor markers to try out, and if you're interested in them, check out this link:

    I really enjoy watching you paint with water colour markers. This is a beautiful piece. I've now bought the whole set of W&N as they are lightfast but I won't buy these Nova markers as they are not lightfast but they would be fine for sketch book paintings. I do have two hand fulls of the Tombow markers until I found out they are not light fast - they are just water base so I've not bought anymore of those. Thank you Gee - look forward to your next painting.

      Hi! You know me, I do love the W&N watercolour markers 😃 but I did like these in terms of colour and value! Lightfastness IS a big deal and I do wonder if I could sell this piece, knowing that it would fade and discolour in prolonged sunlight 🤔 I think for sketchbooks and journalling they'd be really great - colourful, light and portable.
      Thank you for the kind words and for watching!

    Thank you for sharing this gorgeous painting. Those markers look very juicy and fun to play with. And thank you also for doing a lightfast test, I was going to ask you if there was any information on that.

    • @gee355Art
      @gee355Art  4 года назад

      Hi, there is no information on lightfastness on the packet or the pens themselves, just that the, 'ink colour may vary due to different quality paper.' It's safe to say I wouldn't display them in direct sunlight, like the swatch I left on my windowsill 😂 but I would never display classic watercolour paintings in sunlight either. I think price and portability puts them in the 'portable sketching media' category, if I can invent such a category!

    Haha, agree, when I saw the thumbnail I thought you were doing a painting inside the silhouette of a deer's hoof print. Anyway, fabulous as always! Thanks!

      😄 yeah, it was only when they were finished that I thought, 'yeah - hoof print!' but what can you do? 😆
      Thanks for letting me know it's not just me!!

    Nice painting. Have you seen the new Albrëcht Durer watercolour markers from Faber Castell? They are marked as highly lightfast too. Expensive though. Might be worth just getting a couple to try and do a duo tonal piece for review if you are interested.

      Thank you! ☺ I've just got some of their Albrecht Dürer watercolour pencils to have a go at but I do love me some markers! I could just get the primaries and have a go at something, that would be a challenge... 😃
      Thanks for the tip off and ofcourse for watching!

    I love your painting. I have noticed artists having to blend with brushes when using markers. It's almost like the marker is a pan or reservoir of paint, but it's still not flexible enough to blend the way a brush can. Given that do you feel there are advantages to markers?

    • @gee355Art
      @gee355Art  5 лет назад +1

      Hi! Yes, this is always a good question! I use pans instead of tubes so I mix the colours before putting them on the paper so there's a fair amount of dilution going on. The WCM'S can be added directly to the paper and then the amount of water you can add is really variable - just enough to make it move or lots to really splash it around! I know you can vary your brush size to achieve this too but I love the directness of being able to quickly scribble the colours on and then keep them bright and vibrant by only adding a little water. Plus you can just use them as a marker and add pure colour after the painted section has dried, to add dots, streaks and outlines. I still use both the pans and the WCM'S and feel I get slightly different results when I do?
      I'd say they're always worth a try, like any media, just to see if you like them 😃
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

      Hi! I'm guessing they must be pretty good if they've been making them for that long. I've never seen that brand in the UK before - are they good to use? ☺

    I have had a very weird experience…I have to tell you about it. I bought these to try because a friend came over with her little travel watercolour set and painted one of my roses. Then I was having a meeting at my science institute about our new project (molluscs related), we found your mussel picture and wanted to ask permission to use it as our project photo on the website and so it took me to your you tube video and this one, where I see it’s about those markers and I thought that’s funny I just bought those!!! Very very odd happening. Where can I contact you about permission questions to maybe use one of your photos? 😊 greetings from Germany! Marianne
