Nightstand infested with termites.

- One day I discovered that my nightstand was infested with termites. I got my house fumigated a few months after this video shot. I have another video (unpublished) showing the termites coming through the floor where the leg of the nightstand was planted. After moving the nightstand outside you could see a small hole on the floor where the leg of the nightstand indented the carpet. The floorboards beneath the nightstand creak loudly. I'm sure they chomped up the floor quite a lot before getting to my nightstand. I never mention or show in the video that this is occurred on the second story of the house. Crazy.
I love how you just have a stash of Smarties in your nightstand.
They're the best candies ever made

Thank you for your honesty. I had no idea what they looked like. I love to pick up free furniture and even pick up discarded pieces from the neighbors and refinish it, but this has made me think twice before taking any more free furniture.
The termites came from inside the house, ate their way through the floor and then into the leg of this nightstand.

You poor guy, wonder how much damage they've done to your house if they've gotten to the second story...
Fumigate your night stand? Just throw it out and get a new one! Why is it still even in the house?!
The nightstand alone was $1000
silvermica gotta admit thats a scam
@@crystalxxx_xplays28blogs98 - no, it isn't - actually. Put it to you this way - how much time would it take you to make that night stand?
silvermica well i can see why it’s expensive but i feel you can buy other nightstands even 3 with 1k
@@crystalxxx_xplays28blogs98 - I like high end stuff (as do these termites).
I know the feeling. Just found this kind of frass inside a dresser and evidence of subterranean termites. So that means 2 different species of termites we are going to be dealing with. Also, your neighbor most likely has them too since it’s a duplex so you guys can at least split the cost of a tent fumigation.
The other owner and I split the fumigation cost. Although, it took some convincing - initially, they didn't believe there was a termite problem. Even after seeing this video. Instead choosing to believe that the nightstand was infested. This was not true since I bought the nightstand new and you could also see that the termites came through the floor and then into the nightstand. Good times!

If you dig into those holes on top you will fid it's hard. Many times you might find larvae there. I'd advise you to dig it out and then treat it.
Me over here realizing that I have termites under my table
Definitely don't recommend anyone buying wooden products if he/she live in a place where humidity level is constantly higher than 50.
California is dry.
Heck with the termites, look at all those smarties !!!!!!!!
I noticed that same dust stuff coming from my vintage speakers when I moved them from a desk to the floor. I do know what I am going to do. So far I sprayed roach and ant killer as that's what I have on hand and hope it seeps in the holes deep enough
Egad. That'll probably work. But, all the bugs are still inside though. As for my nightstand, I took my nightstand outside and sprayed it down with some type of termite spray that I had bought from the hardware store. I left the nightstand outside for a few days before cleaning it up and bringing it back inside. After that I had the house tented and fumigated. The thing I understand about termites is that they always comeback and all you can really do is fumigate every so many years.
That won't work either toss out or have it fumigated. I'd recommend you get a company to inspect the house. Good luck.
If anyone is curious, those tan colored things are termite fecal pellets when they poop out after eating the wood.
Yeah, that’s what they are.
Whole stack of smarties
I would be more worried about where the nest is - that's what you have to kill!... Martin
If it's drywood termites, get couple of electric heaters and overheat the room to at least 120 deg F (of course close the door to keep hot air in the room) for few hours. Do this when it's very hot outside (100 deg F?). If you can overheat the queen (embedded in some piece of lumber) and she dies, then that should take care of the drywood termite colony. Of course this would not work on subterranean termite colony as the bulk of colony is located underground.
I had the house fumigated (tented) - problem solved.
@@silvermica did they ever comeback
@@netsssanettt I'm sitting on a mouse of dust right now. Just kidding. Did they come back? Not that I can see. But, the thing about termites - once you see them - it's way too late! Also, every house will get termites - therefore fumigating (tenting) should be done regularly. Ideally anyway. I'm just glad they never got to my guitars.
I’ve been seeing that for years but only around one dresser that looked identical to yours. It wasn’t until I started seeing them in the room that I took action. Just broke it down and tossed it but I’m hoping I don’t have to fumigate the house. It seems they really liked that wood specifically.
I've determined that there is no realistic way to get rid of termites other than fumigating. And, you have to do that - somewhat - periodically.

I got the house tented (fumigated) - all is good now.
Hello Good morning I have the same problem. How to fumigated a room what to do ?? Did you know the name of the termite. Thank
I almost thought those were sesame seeds
The comments are going on and on about the damn nightstand. At least you could see exactly what the termites did to it and decided it was worth keeping. I'd be more worried about the unseen damage inside the walls and floors, afraid the floor would buckle under me.
I'm still here - the building still here - so good enough I guess. But, yeah, I'm sure it's a mess in the floors and walls. The funny thing was at the time I tented/fumigated the house (2017) the other owners (i'm in a duplex) blew it off - saying it was just this nightstand that brought the termites in. Of course, that was total nonsense - besides I bought the nightstand brand new from Restoration Hardware two decades earlier. And, just a smidgeon of internet research would reveal just how common termites are and that tenting your house every few years isn't really that unusual. Where I live, every house has or will have termites at some point.
Thanks for putting the video up... Spray the Night Stand Though! I'd Burn it! I actually brought 2 old adirondak chairs home for outside... they too were termite infested. I put them out for the trash and someone scooped them up and took them home!
I bought this nightstand brand new many years ago - the termites ate their way through the floor into one of the legs of this nightstand. I never posted the second video with the nightstand removed - you could see a little hole exactly where the leg of the nightstand sat. In the hole termites could be seen peering through. And, just so you know, I fumigated the house last year - problem solved.
Just "bake" the furnature at 120F or better to get rid of termites. Furnatures are easy to get rid fo termites. House, not so easy.
Nice video! You definitely need a fumigation. Jimmy
Wow! Thanks for sharing

well least my nightstands made of metal and glass... that mustve been a terrifying dicovery.

@@silvermica oh shit. Please no
OH MY LORD, I'm so itchy!
They ate the house framing before coming in.
Years ago I had a bamboo/wicker nightstand, over a year I started noticing odd things like dust, then at night I could hear slight strange clicking/popping noises coming from it! I thought I was going crazy! I noticed holes and I started poking the holes and opening them up with a pin and surprise! Termites! It was disgusting. I threw it out, thankfully it never got to the walls. The table was imported from Indonesia and I believe they were dormant until they were in ideal tempt. Never buy BAMBOO /WICKER FURNITURE THAT HASNT BEEN TREATED AND/OR SEALED! Hopefully they arnt in your walls yet, I’d throw your nightstand out. Good luck ! Do an update of what happened! Cheers
I never posted the video showing the termites coming through the floorboard/carpet - exactly where the nightstand came in contact with the floor. I paid for fumigation shortly after discovering all of this.
silvermica eeeek! I hope you’re termite free, they are nasty lil buggers lol
@@SuzyBenz Yup - fumigating did the trick.
@@silvermica how much did it cost I'm the same problem but its worse at my house and my dad doing little remdies but they keep coming back
@@netsssanettt I had my house tented way back in 2017 I think. It wasn't cheap. Maybe $4000 for both sides of the house. I'm in a duplex so I paid half (although my neighbors initially wanted me to pay for the whole thing). Don't buy a duplex if you don't have to.

This is kinda odd. Usually termites live underground but build mud tunnels to whatever they're eating. Hmm.
These were dry-wood termites.

Pretty much you have to tent your house and fumigate periodically - like every few years. That's just the reality of it. Trying to exterminate small areas within your house is akin to playing Whack-a-Mole.
@@silvermica is there no temporary solution this is my rented house and it's eating the attached cupboard ... I neend a temporary solution all my paperwork has been eaten . N keep applying kerosene oil and salt liquid on the corner..as I saw in one of the video ...

Interesting... Any idea which part of your house they flew in from? and which State do you live in because as you probably already know these are the least common of the 3 species
O ok, thanks

I have similar issue but found out the termites early.Anyhow my wardrobe is gone but now I am scared having a wooden wardrobe but how long I can sit with all my stuff spread in living room? did you get the termites again after fumigation?
I haven't seen termites since I fumigated (tented the house) back in 2017 or 2018 (I forget which year it was). However, that said, I think termites are a lot like ants. They are everywhere and they will be back at some point. Realistically, you need to fumigate every so many years.
Are these drywood or subterranean termites?
drywood
I understand your frustration
Better than bedbugs 😂😂
did fumigation remedy the termites? do you see them back in there?
They've been gone for years. But, keep in mind that termites are very common - pretty much every house has them.

Problem was solved many years ago - tented the house shortly after the video was made.
Maybe they smelled the smarties.
i LOVE smarties!!!
Smarties are like crack!
It's called drywood termites. Remedy is fumigation not spraying anything down. Sorry
I think I wrote in the description that I fumigated.
Trying to figure out what bugs I have. they seemed to go for my wood desk and are coming out from cracks in the floor and wall, but they don't look this big. They are the size of very small ants, but different body. Also not afraid of light, so at least not cockroaches either.
if they look a bit like very tiny termites but you are seeing them around baseboards/cracks then they are probably book lice, harmless and typically not hard to get rid of without pesticides. Just need a good dehumidifier and a lot of patience.
@@otoshii I watched some videos and I think the Book Lice look very similar in some cases but are bigger and move faster than what I had. Seems close though!
so what did you land up doing?
I called an exterminator.

I had the house tented/fumigated shortly after this video was taken. All is good. Well, maybe not so much the nightstand - but all the holes give it character.

No, I bought this new in 2005. The termites came from the floor and into the nightstand. I have another video that I never posted that showed the hole in the floor and the termites coming out of that hole.

It turns out that termites actually make wonderful pets. My nightstand now doubles as a home for thousands of Drywood termites. It’s an amazing symbiotic relationship.
How'd the termite thing turn out?
The entire two story house was turned to dust years ago. I live in a tent now.
Those pellets are termite excrement.
time for a yard fire
How did things work out did you find where else in the house they were?
Shortly after creating this video in 2017/18 (I forget the year) I had the house fumigated (tented) and have never seen a termite since (as of 2021). I'm sure the termites were in other locations that I could not see (which is why fumigation is the most realistic option).
Ahhh your neighbors are gonna wanna do their side too. Trust me.
Actually, they didn't and felt the problem was limited to my side only. Moreover, they came to the unsubstantiated conclusion that I brought in an infested nightstand (bought it new from Restoration Hardware). This was nothing more than dry termites and it's pretty normal to get an infestation every now and again - which is why people fumigate every 5 to 10 years. Fumigation tenting is the best method over other methods simply because it isn't realistic to locate all areas where termites reside. Anyway, it took some work - but I got the other owners to agree to tenting and, not surprisingly, that got rid of the termites.
Glad that worked. I once had a mouse infestation in an old farm house in the country. It got really bad. I told the landlord I was renting from and they blew me off by saying "oh, that's totally normal to have mice out here in the country and that I should try traps." I set up snap traps and was catching 2 and 3 mice at a time in 1 trap. I thought unbelievable. I eventually called the health department as it got so bad I couldn't breathe in the house from all of the mouse droppings and the urine smell would literally chase me out of the house to get fresh air. The landlord did not like me after that and told me to leave. I was like cool. But at least future tenants there will have better living conditions because they had to do a ton of work to that house to make it livable again.
@@queenofgreen96weed - The mice story reminds me of the time I had the bright idea to attract birds to my balcony with food (just bread). The unattended food caused a bunch of mice to scurry about in and around the room I was renting. But, I was lucky enough to put a stop to it by not leaving food about and setting up mouse traps. Actually, mice are really cute - and it sucked to kill them in that way - but, I just can't have these type of creatures running about where I sleep. They're not clean.
@@silvermica They are full of diseases and destroy nearly everything. Theyare not called pest for no good reason.
You need to get an ant eater quick
Chickens work as well - they love to eat termites.
1:33 Termite's poop
I hope you just threw the nightstand out casue you dont get rid of termites with sprays. If you have issues with termites and thats why you want the home fumigated thats not how you kill termites. All you need to do is purchase a chemical such as termidor and if you have concrete around the outside of your home drill holes 16inchs apart all around the home and inject the chemical diluted with water into each hole. If no concrete is around the home you just need to dig a trench 6 inchs wide by 6 inchs deep all around the home and apply the chemical to the ground same amount every 16inchs then use a hose to have it penetrate the ground. This will kill any termites since they will bring the chemical to the nest and kill everything plus prevent new termites for up to a year some chemicals say up to 5 years. If you do it yourself you will save yourself thousands. The only time you should have to fumigate or do a heat treatment is for horrible flea, and bedbug issues since roachs are very easy to kill now adays within 30days using a spray , insect growth regulator and bait such as max force or advion. The Igr is basicly a birth control for the bugs and makes them want to eat more bait and costs less then 100$ to do yourself.
I fumigated in August of 2017. It was complicated for me because I own half of a duplex (both units need to be fumigated at the same time). Convincing the other owners this needed to be done was difficult - but I was successful and was able to fumigate a few months after I shot that video.
