I had a 2005 Xterra SE and luckily I heard about the radiator problem before I got SMOD so I just put in a new radiator. However, they had anoother issue and that was the timing chain tensioners wearing out so I had those replaced under warranty bu the second time they wore out I paid $1500. I now have a 2012 PRO 4X 6 speed manual and love it!
Please, you have been very honest with the review. The transmission issue you talked about is helpful to me. I'm planning to own one by the end of the year. I love, love the Xterra. Thanks
The transmission issue is very common, if you search "(enter your suv here)" and "strawberry milkshake" ... Fords do it, 4runners do it, the transmission cooler is built into the radiator and the lines inside the radiator can corrode over time. The more thorough, slightly more expensive answer is a new radiator. Most new radiators fix the transmission cooler corrosion issue with more corrosion resistant internals. You can certainly skip transmission cooling (esp if you don't tow, or, like, rock crawl in the desert) or install a separate cooler outside the radiator. B u t the _advantage_ to the manufacturers design is that the radiator warms quickly and the warmth from that flows into the transmission and _helps_ increase the longevity of the transmission. So with the integrated "cooler" you're getting a system that more quickly brings the transmission temperature up into a better range and also keeps it inside that range so it doesn't over heat. Something to consider imo. Also, always use manufacturer recommended coolant (no tap water, ever) and flush/replace it on your makers suggested interval. Never the "generic" "works in any car" stuff which may not have the corrosion inhibitors specific to the metals your manufacturer put in their cooling systems. While many friends tell me I'm certifiable, I am not a certified mechanic. I just (play one on the internet ;) / ) like to read about vehicles
I've wanted one ever since my daughter almost got one. She actually got a 2006 4runner. Anyway a week ago I got a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid. I'm pretty happy with it.
Nissan still makes the Xterra, but it's no longer available in the United States. The last model year for the Nissan Xterra in the United States was 2015.
The Xterra doesn’t have secondary air injection nor EGR to lower emissions. It’s good because there’s less parts to break but it lead to its retirement from production.
I don't know. It was on the vehicle when I got it. At first I wasn't crazy about it but after a while I was glad it was on there. It gave the Xterra a good beefy feeling.
Great video! Love my 2015 PRO 4X! If you read these comments, where did you purchase your front brush guard? Great looking and looks like it’s great quality! Or can anyone recommend one exactly or very similar to the one he’s using? Thanks!
the bypass is only a couple hundred bucks at a trans shop around here. That was a couple years ago now, now sure if price went up. The trick is to catch it before it before it damages the trans. Good luck and thanks for watching.
That seems kind of low to me. Take a look at KBB, pick the options and I think they will give you a value higher then 1500. It's worth a shot, good luck.
I believe they got rid of them because it wasn't going to meet future pollution regulations or something like that. They were going to have make too many changes for it to meet them. I've been doing research heavy because I want one but read all the transmission nightmare until the bypass solution. So trying to find one that was bypassed before messed up. Thanks for your review.
Thanks for the comment. If you find one that is still ok or the trans has been rebuilt, a trans shop can do the bypass for a $100 or $200. I think but not sure, Nissan finally fixed the problem for the 2010 model. I could be wrong, though. You would have to do more research on it. Thanks and good hunting.
Erick Miller I'm close to buying one. 2013 Xterra X (base model. Without even fog lights) 83k km ~10k USD that I checked and paid a deposit (100 only)? Or 15 off-road 71k km for double price? Thoughts?
Erick Miller The difference between "off-road" and pro4x is the spot light on the roof rack and it doesn't come with leather seats. Everything else is exactly the same. The x is 4x4, but doesn't have diff lock, hill descent assist, roof rack, fog lights, off-road/pro4x tires and shocks, screen, etc... it's very basic. But was taken care of and was used as a family hauler. It was the best one I found and tested. Now if I let it (X) go, I'll have to start looking all over again, because the off road I mentioned above was sold. I'm from sultanate of Oman. GCC. The gcc top spec is the off road but some dealers do import US specs pro4x which is a bit cheaper but usually has an accident. Im trying to get something that I can drive for 10+ years.
I just picked up my 2005 Xterra! Can’t wait to do stuff to it!

thanks for the comment. I like the PRO 4X. I think they are just as good as any other 4x4 out there. Have fun.
@@AmericanRoadTrip Thank you and great video. Thanks for making this!

2005 Xterra SE “Nismo Off Road” with 168k on it. No major issues. Love the car!

That's great. Overall they are great vehicles. Good luck.

What is the mileage when it runs into the radiator problem? How much it cost to do the bypass fix? Thanks and nice review!

the bypass can be done yourself for 30 bucks. or you can buy a new radiator for 100, or do both
fingers crossed. 2006 160k mi. not to many issues. but selling this wk . maybe 1500 bucks.

First, it is not a car, two its true prowess is off road.

I read on forums that it was solved in 10+ models.

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it 🙏
Nissan just sucks at transmissions and at taking responsibility for their mistakes I will never buy a new Nissan ever again
