FT 817 ? I have to agree. There is just something about that little radio that I like as well. I had one and sold it to get the IC703+. At that time I just had one QRP radio. Now I have a small collection. But I never disliked my dependable FT817. You need to add a YouKits HB-1B MK3 to your collection. Hi Hi Neat video. Always enjoy watching them. Barry, KU3X/QRP
Enjoy watching ur videos. My xyl thinks I’m weird, but then again suspect she always has. What length and type of patch cable are you running between ur tuner and rig and between ur rig and antenna? One of my radio projects this summer is to replace all of my cables. I think it’s folly to buy an expensive rig, antenna and other equipment then buy cheap cables and connectors.
I agree with your thoughts on cables--get good ones. I've been using RG-316, which I find works brilliantly for QRP HF operation. Some of my cables are made by ABR Industries and some are from PackTenna. All are pre-made RG-316 cables with BNCs. I have a 2 foot section to go between the ATU and rig, then 8, 12 and 24 foot cables to go between the ATU (or rig) and the antenna. You're on the right path, though: buy quality cables always. Oh, and my XYL thinks I'm weird too, even though she's also now a ham.
I've only added a 500Hz CW filter and an external "Buddy Board": swling.com/blog/2021/01/upgrading-my-yaesu-ft-817-transceiver-with-the-g7uhn-rev2-buddy-board/
As usual, great activation video. One quick suggestion, if I may. If you're having cellular connectivity issues and have either an APRS capable HT OR if you have the right audio cable for you rig-phone you can use the APRSDroid app on Android to spot yourself in both SOTA as well as POTA. Let me know if this os the case so I can give you the right APRS commands for both. DE HI8ILO, 73.
As I mentioned earlier, the keyer on my uBITX V6 isn't functioning properly. I even tried setting it up for straight key and using an external keyer--but that doesn't work either. The odd thing is it *used* to work. I'm trying to remember when I did the latest firmware update as I'm guessing that's what's hosed it up. I plan to re-install all of the firmware in the coming weeks and give it a second go. Would welcome your advice!
@@ThomasK4SWL Could be static damage. Get another aduino/teensy whatever board and flash it. The BITX does not TX a1a but a modulated tone. If it is not working on SSB as well, might be a problem relay or relay driver.

Your raw format really helps me copy CW, even with people tuning up on your frequency lol. 73 de KI5JCO

@@ThomasK4SWL one of your QSOs had a guy keying IN MI, first I thought Indiana, then realized he was saying in MI. That has to be confusing.
Nice activation indeed

Hey Thomas, Have you done any modifications on the transceiver ?

Yes, please! I'd love to know how to do an APRS spot! Cheers, Thomas K4SWL

Thanks!

Such is life with propagation in 2021. I can't wait for the cycle to heat up even a bit! :)
That FT-817nd sounds awfully quiet. You must have have a filter in there.
I do! A narrow CW filter I bought from WG0AT. It has great SOTA mojo! :)
Have you calculated your RF exposure?? Lol
Ha ha!
But no BITX V6.1 ?

@@G7VFY RR. I also read that there's a known keyer issue with one of the firmware versions. I'll look into this.
