G'day Max, pants o'clock at 27⁰C here in good ols blighty 😂 nothing wrong with the filming mate, us one man bands, still put out great content, I reckon I've been watching you a good few years now, and enjoy every video you make, thanks for sharing
Hi Max! At about 29:30 : even on the Multifix toolpost you can loosen the nut on top and turn the toolpost until you get the desired angle. The beauty of the Multifix system is that it gives you perfect repeatability.
You need a 50mm socket to undo that nut ! I do not like the holders with only 3 tool holding bolts . It makes it too restrictive in the tooling that i can use . So it's going to get changed to a Dickson style . Cheers 👍
Hi Max, in the previous episode , you said that it was the middle of winter there, and the temperature had dropped to 20°c, and your wearing your woolly hat and a thick jacket. Well in England were in the middle of summer here, and we having a bit of a heat wave at the moment, and it's a barmy 23°c here!!! All the best from the UK, keep up the good work, I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.
G'day Max. Excellent videos on Spray Welding, & machining the axle. Good to see the use of a Round Nose Profile on your lathe tool, giving a finer finish to the job. Glad you showed the complexity of all the surfaces that work together from the baring surface right through to the seal finished face. Well done.
G'day Max, don't apologise for the camera work, It's way better than most of us would manage, certainly better than me, and I'm sure it adds a lot of time to your actual job.
It’s a great deal more time and effort. And I really do appreciate guys like max that take the time to make it happen. He’s a better man than I for it. But it’s videos like this that inspire so many to do so much.
Hi Max, there should be a locating pin underneath the body of your Multifix tool holder for clocking in different multiples of degrees (If it's like mine). I just removed that pin and now I use the main nut for adjusting the angle I want and it hasn't moved on me even with deep cuts at high feed rates. I hope that helps and yep, keep up the good work!
Couldn’t of worked out better. They look like the last job you’d want to f up lol I don’t watch for dazzling camera work I watch because you use the kind of kit I work with (not all singing and dancing) and get brilliant results. Thanks max 👍👍👍
Beautiful work as always Max. I think that new shop of yours is going to be very busy in the coming years with the type of work you can do and the capacity you have. All I can say is good luck to you mate but somehow, I don't think you will need it. Cam
Max, thanks for the heads up on insurance. My policy was cancelled as soon as they heard I was using 'tools' to earn a living. Data entry was OK. Even my broker agreed this was stupid, as the place is much safer with me home every day. Go figger... Worst is, I've been at home 15 years, so there's 15 x 3k p.a. down the dunny in wasted premiums.
Another bang up job Max, really nice finish and fit-up… I’m guessing there’s a final drive gear that must mount on end of those axles. All the best, Cheers……
Hi Max, I always work in thou's for close tolerance work, means more to me than working in metric, showing my age. Multifix toolpost verses piston, wedge, Dickson or the turret and the old style lantern toolpost. They all have their pros and cons. For ridgity you can't beat the 4 way turret toolpost which I used on my DSG.
It's hard enough alone Max...Are you're you want help?🤣🤣 Great stuff again Max. Micro 100 for the win. That is what I use most of the time in the portable boring rig. I have no idea where the myth came from you cannot take small cuts with carbide, probably inserted tooling as you need tool pressure for a good finish. As you obviously know a good sharp brazed carbide will take a small cut and leave a great finish despite what 99% of people say Just like a HSS tool It has to be sharp, ground and honed. But with a diamond wheel. Right off a green wheel is a recipe for disaster. What a great repair Max I enjoyed it very much. Are still Cat Fitting Max? Cheers
Thanks . Working on large plate compactors , de watering pumps & gensets nowdays , 3 days a week . I was glad to give the Cat stuff away before it did too much damage to my joints ! 👍
Hello Max. The repair turned out nicely. It must be a good feeling to be finally using the lathe after putting all the effort into fixing it up. I know I felt that way when I started using my HBM after spending two years getting it in order. I wanted to ask you how the tailstock way lube set up is working? I saw the oil cups at the back of the tailstock in this video and it reminded me about that. I've been thinking of doing that to mine but I was waiting to hear how yours worked out. Thanks, Ken
Hi Ken . The tailstock cups work great . I did cut a bit of extra oil way grooving in so they would work as they should . It was time well worth spent . I have it all in one of the earlier JFMT videos . Cheers 👍
Thanks for the two part presentation, made possible by the work done on the lathe. My memory has built in lag now that I've reached a certain age. Did you start the repairs three or so years ago ? Cheers
Dam, did I just hear max ask me to move down under and start working as a helper for room and board… ? I could swear I heard “C mon already, and bring them kiddos too, hurry up I’m slammed with work and there just isn’t enough time in the day“ Man, I need to get some sleep.. or another lager.. 😁🍻👍 Haha, I’m just kidding ya max, I wouldn’t threaten a good Aussie man with my candy ass American presence. Haha 😂 But I do really like that shop Sir.
Just a question, why do you put the dial indicator close to the chuck? Would it be more accurate to put it at the end of the piece (greater length/moment equals more movement) or does it not really matter? Great work as always hooked on your videos now!
It's a C size tool post . Has 40mm CD holders . I am not sure what i am going to do with it yet as it may end up on the DSG . I have another tool post that i will fit . Thanks 👍
I admit to being confused watching you true up the part in the Chuck. I sorta was expecting loosen the highs & tighten the lows, but unless your camera is filming in mirror image, you appear to be turning the Chuck key the opposite way to my Chuck key for tightening? 🤷♂️ Is it a left handed upside down 4 jaw Chuck or something? 😂 I admit I’m easily confused at the best of times. 😉👍
@@markfoster6110 Ahh of course, now it makes complete sense. Duh! (Smacks self upside the head).😜😂😂 Why didn’t I think of that? 🤷♂️🙄 It’s called getting old. 😉
I really like my multifix. But I don’t have the body pinned down to the top slide either. So I can just loosen up the tool post stud and swing it in whatever angle I want. But… I’m not on a real big machine either, I’m just on a little 1330. So if it’s seeing enough load to move that tool post then I’ve made some poor decisions or something went horribly wrong ! lol 😂
I agree with you on the multi fix tool posts. I got one for my new lathe, but it is difficult to get fine adjustments. I always have to loosen the cross slide(two nuts) to adjust. Also, they seem more difficult to install when there are a lot of chips. Aloris types I think are easier in that respect. Thanks for the video from the northern hemisphere where it’s hot now.
Radius allowance & removing consistent amounts off faces. No book could tell you that. Or maybe there is in reverse engineering. That 3 phase just hums along.
I don't like the multifix either. The only one who does like it is abom so of course all of his minions have to follow suit and claim its the best ever. LOL. Kurtis over at CEE told a story of one of those bursting to pieces and severely injuring the guy on the lathe. Anyway, was an interesting job you did here. I took notes. LOL..
Of course, you could have popped the axles into the freezer as well. The warm bearings would have just dropped on.... :) :) What?? You dont have a 6 foot long/deep/wide freezer??? :) :)
Your doing an excellent job Max. It's the knowledge you share. Not the fluf.
Thanks 👍
love old photos of days gone by.
They can be rare , no mobile phones back then ! 👍
Amazing how precise you are able to get. I was a rough carpenter and if something didn't fit I just got a bigger hammer. Great work
We do that too ! Cheers 👍

Yeah, you beat me too it. 22C here in our part of Yorkshire and it's getting a bit on the warm side.
Mid to upper twenty's is my sort of weather ! When it's hot you can not cool off . 👍
Interesting stuff. Thanks Max. 👍

Good one Max. Fitting bearings with heat/cold can be really stressful to say the least. But they went on with no problems. Thanks for the videos. 👍🇳🇱

They are from a Hydrema dump truck . I used to ride , last trip was a lap around Australia several years ago ! 👍

Maybe about 2 years ago . Seems more like 3 ! 👍
Multifix's in that size seem awfully bulky. More excellent work without any drama. Cheers
Too bulky & only 3 screws not 4 like a real tool post ! That limits it's use severely . 👍

It would involve a lot more work & maybe weaken the casting . 👍
