Rhino to Illustrator workflow is extremely important when you’re trying to create 3D section or 3D floor plan because Rhino allows us to export vector lines directly from Rhino as Illustrator files. In this tutorial, we’re going to go through this workflow and share tips and tricks on how to combine clay renderings from Vray with vector lines in Illustrator.
The end result is a 3D section / diagram / render where we can manually adjust the thickness of certain lines, surfaces or change the opacity of some elements. This workflow will allow you to have full control over your models and drawings and present them in an interesting way combining multiple layers.
The extended version of the tutorial will explain how to export material rendering and various display styles from Rhino and use them as well to create a final composite image in Photoshop after we finish up with Illustrator.

Great Tips!
Hey Harry, thanks!
If you'd like to take this a step further and have a complete step by step approach in learning Rhino and Grasshopper that includes our personal coaching, you may want to check out our Rhino for Architects 2.0 Course! Please reach out and send me an email at dusan@howtorhino.com if you're interested and I'll tell you a lot more about it there and share the course platform with you as well! Cheers! :)
with all those objects, how is your rhino interface so fast? is there a way to optimize? I currently have issues that have too many lines and surfaces and make2d becoming incredibly slow. Thanks for the help. Amazing video!
Did you solve it?
Gr8 vid as usual
Thanks Uros :)
Está muy bien y potente. Pero le veo poca salida para profesionales ya que la documentación generada parece pobre.
Wish I had this channel while I was doing my arch course. I had to go through so much trial and error, this video broke down everything, made it so easy to understand. Thank you!
You're welcome! Glad to hear that you've found this useful :)
Love the tutorial.
If I May ask where do you get your 3D people from?
Great tutorial! :D I was wondering if Make 2D is the only way to generate line drawings from a model? seems to generate so many unnecessary curves and can slow down the workflow at times.
That's the only way to export vector lines from Rhino or you can also print it as vector pdf. If you don't want unnecessary curves, make sure to hide those elements before you do Make2D, then they won't be visible.
Curve Boolean + trim
Hi. I was wondering if the application/process would be the same if I were to make a 3D plan
Yes, it would be exactly the same, there will be a video tutorial coming soon on that topic :D
How to Rhino thank you so much it’s much needed, currently struggling making one lol.
great video as usual, thanks
btw I prefer to use Affinity Designer it can handle Rhino vectors way cleaner than Illustrator.
Thanks Mahmood,
I just checked that software, seems quite interesting! However, Illustrator is used far more in architectural studios, that's for sure :D
how did you cut the building in half
Using Clipping plane
Nice tutorial! Great rythm!
Thanks Xavier, make sure to check our friend's music, he's the one who created the music in the background :D

Are there any newer tutorials on youtube that show you how to do a 2D section? All of the videos on here are dated and I need different perspective(s) to see which one aligns with me best.
The principles of creating this kind of 3D section haven't really changed. However, there are some newer tools for sections in Rhino 8. That's on our roadmap
All that in 15 min😧 I would of taken an hour or maybe more 😭😩😂 Great video!
Thanks Vanesa! Glad you liked the tutorial :)
I've lost my clipping plane in my project and I couldn't find it again basically ruined it is there anyway that I can find it ???
You can go Ctrl+Z to come back to that point, but you need to know when it happened :)
Also make you've hidden it, make sure there are no hidden geometry in the file. What you could do in the future to avoid this, just place the clipping plane on a separate layer and lock it :)
Also try Show command and check layers
