I was wondering the same thing and just saved my previous windows files that were on the hard drive onto my MacBook desktop. I then was able to erase the contents on the hard drive and reformat it to ExFAT. Then all I did was drag and drop the desktop folder back into the hard drive as well as my new Mac files!

I don't think you really need to use Time Machine if you are using an external HDD to move your pictures off the computer. Time Machine is used when you need to back up files to be prepared in case you need to restore them. However, in your case, I don't see you will lose your pictures in your external HDD.

This is fine for a brand new drive but what if you have an existing Windows NT ext drive nearly full of files that you need to write to and work from using a Mac? I found a Paragon app that works for newer drives while keeping them in NTFS but even that won't recognize legacy drives in NTFS format.

That’s why he moved all the files from the hard drive to the desktop before erasing the hard drive and then he moved it back to the hard drive
