    It was racist- a clear form of ‘micro-aggression’. It is striking to me that people dance hip-hop and rap songs, dresses alike and acts like black folks with all the attitude and then they can be so racist?
    If those dancers want to be international they better prepare to different people with different physiques. Work on yourself! Don’t belittle others for your ‘failure’.

    If Koreans are going to copy music genre's, beats, and rhythms from the black community, they need to educate themselves about culture, history, racism and much more about these communities. NO EXCUSES, WE ARE IN 2024. You can not copy the best parts of a community, then act like you live under a rock when it comes to you knowing the issues the community faces. It's also important to acknowledge the originality of the work so that you give credit where it'ss due.
    People tend to infer the following when talking about race.
    RACE = physical traits commonly shared among her and people who look like her globally
    RACE = Her belonging to a unique culture unique shared predominantly by people who look like her globally. While not everything is the same, there are things that are similar.
    RACE = Unique history that affects her and people who look like her
    RACE = Unique mannerisms
    RACE = Unique foods shared by the community
    and much more.
    As a black person she is more curvy than the Asian lady, and since this type of music originated from people who look like her back in African where it highlights some of these body parts then she will tend to look more natural dancing than the Asian lady no offense, especially if she is good. But besides her body the most important thing is culture, heritage and history. Growing up black, or African, this type of music genre is naturally exposed to you and the beats, the rhythm carries a deeper meaning when the people dance it. Its more than just a dance effort or performance. Its an expression of our ancestors and a connection we deeply share with them passed down from many generations. So, besides her being great at the dance, it could be her dance expressions looked more natural because she connected to the music, beats and ryrhm on a much deeper level than the Asian lady. To not consider these things and to reduce her winning to the physical abilities is to spit on the face of all Africans and their decentants whose music genre, beats and rhythm you are dancing to. Its ignorant, shallow, and a lack of understanding of humity and what makes us unique.
    Dear Korea, and the wider Asian community, lets do better and deal with the antiblackness in the community. Humanity is very diverse and beautiful, if we only focus on race we miss out of its beauty.

      You didn't even watch the whole show and now judging Redlic by a clip. Instead of finding out the truth, believing some random youtuber who produces clickbait videos is what you did. As a person who finished the whole show, I only see that Redlic was confident about herself and was serious about grasping the opportunities. During the choreography choosing session, Latrice did admit that she didn’t even make an attempt to translate the lyrics of ‘click like’ to understand the content. In addition, Latrice didn’t choreograph the whole chorus part and she performed worse in leading the sub-leader class, including uncertainty about the details of her own choreography and uneven distribution of the center part. On the other hand, Redlic tried her best to fit the lyrics into her choreography and wanted to reach perfection. Considering the unseriousness Latrice showed and she didn’t put all her effort into the choreography, no wonder why Redlic felt unsatisfied with Latrice being the “commander” of the sub-leader class. Latrice’s attitude, ability and performance weren't persuasive enough to be the “commander”. This is the authentic reason for Redlic being unsatisfactory with the competition result, but not racism. Redlic and Latrice were friendly towards each other for the whole show, especially for the K-pop dance mission “Mannequeen” vs. “Jam Republic” part. How would Redlic be racist? Instead of blindly believing others’ wordings, learn to find out the truth by yourself.

    I think they also underestimated how difficult Afro-Dance is too, I was surprised they had picked Latrice choreography as it was her specialty, Kirsten is probably they only person their that could match her at that style of dance.
    My biggest complaint is the fact that Mnet aired what Redlic said & then they didn’t elaborate on it in the following episode. With that being said they still follow each other on IG so they’re probably still on good terms. People forget these episodes were filmed over a month ago (teasers for the first few episodes released back in July) & a lot has happened between then & now.
    Also I just want to see the girls dance, this is the most dramatic dance show in existence & people are too invested in the conflicts. They’re trying to go global but aren’t doing a good job at convincing future international groups to join if conflict is all they see.

      I know this is a month old but I need to correct you on something. For black people to succeed in most careers outside of niche cities and African countries, you literally have to play nice and be the "bigger" person all the time. Keeping professional connections and sometimes being an apologist for those who wrong us. So them following each other on IG means absolutely nothing. Tracing her from Australia, to China, now Korea, she literally has to suck it up. If she didn't she would get persecuted. Look what happen to Sam Okyere when he called out racist in Korea. They cancelled him. So I caution using those kid of "proofs" as proof of anything. We don't know. Won't ever know unless we become friends with them. It's part of the black experience.

      @@Annonymous5411 Sorry for the late reply. I agree with everything you said but tbh that applies to anyone trying to put their front foot in in a different environment. For example Zsun from Coco & Butter faced the same discrimination while teaching Dance Hall in the Caribbean & people there were frowning upon her. Not realising she was a student of some of the most legendary dancehall dancers such as Nickblackeagle & Boysierosesthelegend. This seems to be an issue beyond the black community. Also Latrice was massive in China & was shown a lot of love, the majority of her classes were sold out during her appearance at SDC. I respect Sam Okyere and agree with your statement, I’ve visited Korea multiple times & have faced discrimination during my visits there but I think people tend to forget that Korea is a conservative country. I mean last time I visited they had just voted in a Prime Minister that was openly against the LBGT community, & most of those votes were from Koreans under their 30s.

    Black people get to decide what’s considered racist or not, It was a racial stereotype and also micro aggressive. I’ve seen this in a few Korean variety shows as well. She wouldn’t have treated Kirsten or the other Korean dancers that way. Crazy how a a lot of the dance they do, originates from black culture, yet this is the attitudes they have. If you respect the dance, genre etc or participate in it, you should respect the people that created it as well. If the things were turned around and Latrice made a comment, then she would have received a lot of backlash. Let’s call a spade a spade.

    Even without the racist connotations she's whining bc she lost, without any real justification.

    • @louiselaliberte9816
      @louiselaliberte9816 Год назад +6

      I disagree. If she tries to 'address' it publicly she'll just get dragged even more. People are very quick to put meaning and intention into other people's words and actions, without knowing that person or being present to understand the context first hand. Even you are doing it. Making comments like 'what gives away the racist part', as if you're exposing the truth or uncovering her real intentions. The ONLY person who she owes any explanation or apology to is Latrice. Latrice was the one who was offended and/or hurt and if they've made their peace, the public and the netiverse of self-appointed morality police out here with their guns always fully loaded, cocked drawn and ready to annihilate the career and entire life of anyone remotely famous or working hard to be, the moment they say or do anything they find remotely unacceptable or inappropriate. And they're always chomping at the bit to trample all over anyone at a whisper of a rumour or any accusations of impropriety or wrong doing?, regardless of whether those rumours or accusations are false or yet to be proven. This is a perfect example. Redlic (sp?) made the comment and then everyone else decided what she actually meant. Yes, she could have been saying that Latrice has an unfair advantage because she thinks Black women are naturally more physically fit, or have more curves. It's not the most demeaning or insulting Racial stereotype, but it's still a stereotype and that's not ok to the rest of the world, even if it's still seen as harmless on Korea. Actually, if we;re being honest, even in North America, there are stereotypes about Black women and men that people think are ok because they aren't blatantly derogatory, or are justified as 'compliments'. Stuff like, Black people are naturally better Athletes (dancers in this case), or they're more resilient to pain. For examples, it's been prooven that doctors in the US regularly under medicate Black women for pain because of this racial (untrue) bias and many Black women even lose their lives from illness and curing childbirth because they are sent back home with no medical care, or are not treated improperly. But back to Korea...in Korea, diversity and multicultural inclusion is a relatively new concept for reasons that aren't hard to comprehend, so it's not unusual for a Korean citizen to make culturally insensitive or racially offensive remarks without awareness of their impact or meaning. And trust, there is MEANING and HISTORY behind the stereotype about Black men and women being 'physically more fit', that are rooted in Slavery and over-sexualization of Black women in particular. Now, that being said, the only way to know if Redlic was upset because Latrice is a dancer who is physically fitter and stronger than her, or if she thought that Latrice was physically fitter and stronger BECAUSE she's Black, would be if she said, "...because she's Black.', but she didn't. Something to consider, is that if Redlic had made the same. complaint, but her opponent was one of the Korean or Japanese dancers who are obviously physically stronger than her (there are several, like ALL of the Wolfy ladies lol), or if she were up against her own team leader, who even other dancer say has an unfair advantage because she's taller, no one would be dragging her. They might shake their heads for being a poor sport, but that's it. However, just because Latrice is Black, the whole Netiverse is losing their minds, insisting it HAS to be because she's Black. Does anyone recognize the ignorance and racism in that assumption? Pretty damn hypocritical if we're being honest. People just love to hate.Not only that, but there were remarks that could be seen as offensive or inappropriate, made by other dancers that were ignored by the "I heard that, now you die" Police. For example, in an earlier episode, dancers were giggling and making comments about Kristen's backside, insinuating it was giving her an advantage in the battle, but nobody called them out for it because it wasn't framed as something significant by the editing. AND even if anyone truly believed Redlic was being racially insensitive, then the reaction shouldn't be to drag her, it should be to educate her on why it was unacceptable. The ONLY cure for ignorance is enlightenment. Don't 'vilify', 'EDIFY'. Lastly, like I said, any attempts to 'explain herself' to the angry netizens is going to be met with unkindness. Anyone demanding an explanation, has already tried and convicted her in their own minds, so it's pointless. They'll say she's lying if she denies racial motivation, or accuse her of insincerity if she admits to being racially motivated and offers an apology. Either way, she loses. If I weer in her shoes, I'd make sure Latrice and I were ok and I'd let the netizens squawk about it until they find someone or something new to direct their self-righteous indignation at. Let the lady live already. How many Korean celebrities and aspiring artists have to take their own lives before the evil netizens and toxic standoms out in the netiverse realize that when they send out comments and posts like the ones about this situation, they're potentially coming away from the keyboard with blood on their hands. STOP the HATE and if you can't offer edification or meaningful resolution, then stay the f**k out of peoples ACTUAL LIVES. It's entertainment to us, but for them, it's their livelihood, their career, their dreams, their existence. Goo Ha Ra, Jonghyun, Sulli, Moonbin Song Yoo Jung, Cha In Ha, Lee Hee Ryeon/U;Nee. These are just a few in a long list Korean celebs and aspiring artists who committed suicide and most, if not all of these deaths, were influenced by the same kind of unfair and necessary, pressure, judgment, rumours, accusations hate and general toxic behaviour directed at them, that is now being directed at people Redlic (sp?). @@louiselaliberte9816 Calling out someone for saying something is not OK is not the same as bullying, accusing and canceling unfairly. Even if Latrice wasn't black it would be not okay to say those things, specially when you're supposed to be a "professional dancer". If you wanna go for the "we don't know if it was racist or not bc it was not explicit" you do you, but don't shame people for trying to educate. What she said was disrespectful and unprofessional at best, even if not racist. I obviously agree with you on the bullying part, no one should be posting hateful comments towards her, but calling her out is not bad.
      Assuming things and being respectful about it is not inherently bad either, she could just explain (or not, if she doesn't want to) what she meant and it would be all over, or she could just do what she's done and say absolutely nothing and I (and all the respectful comments) would be disappointed but we wouldn't make a scene about it (like, I don't care if she's a bad person or if she doesn't want to say anything, I'll continue with my day as always).

      I recall Redlic saying that her DMs were flooded with swears when a fan asked whether she got a message or not (and that was like 3 weeks after that EP)
      And some time later she said to her fans that you don’t always have to say compliments to her and can criticize her for what’s wrong. So I think leaving the comment section open was her way of accepting the criticism. (But I feel bad about what happened and the excessive hate that she’s getting)
      I’m a translator myself and I’m translating for several Korean television programs but if I spot any racist/inappropriate comment, I leave a slight note on them for the producers to take note. So since everything isn’t aired live (except for the finals) they should have cut stuff out. But as the episodes progressed there was also the problem with the translation. So…

We compete again and we beat the bar that was raised while our competitors complain and say it's unfair that they are built to do this..... Yes it's called blatant racism just in Korean form.

Blacks are AMAZING at singing, dancing, acting, cooking, GOSPEL, SOUL, because we are natural at it all. We shouldn't have to keep fighting for what other people keep taking from us and having the nerve to call it "ORIGINAL". Blacks aren't weak, we're naturally stronger than most cultures by birth it's just genetics. I'm sorry someone people are weak mentally naturally. My question is where did the Korean K-pop industry think hip-hop dancing started? On the streets of New York in urban black neighborhoods. It's in our blood and our soul! And it kinda sad we pass the dancing down to other ethnic groups and still we get racial discrimination and disrespect. Please give respect where the origin of hip-hop dancing started. Black women like Janet Jackson, Karyn White and many other black women back up dancers from the 80's and 90's! For the people who aren’t aware why people are saying it’s racist and don’t want to educate themselves…just think about the scene from the Jordan Peele movie “get out.” The black character was literally asked if he thought being black gave him certain advantages. You see this kind of thinking all the time in American sports like football and basketball. It’s a horrible stereotype to think that we have more “physicality” based on our race because it’s also caused people to think we don’t feel pain the same way they do. This is especially apparent in the health field. Doctors would perform experimental surgeries on black women with no anesthesia because they believed they were stronger and didn’t feel pain. While I doubt that dancer thinks this way, she definitely has racial biases that she needs to get educated about so hopefully she can learn from.

    • @OneYulaw
      @OneYulaw 3 месяца назад

      In that instance it is a stereotype and it's actually true. Especially in the nature of burst speeds. I used to be near and in alt right circles as a white person and once I got out of that bs and understood that the stuff I was saying a long the lines of “if black ppl want to become better then they have to change their culture.” In my mind when I was still on the right, that wasn’t racist, let alone it was the truth in my mind. But, in reality, it was racist and was communicating how I at the time wanted black ppl to act more like me (aka white). I just wish we discussed that dogwhistles are a thing and are prevalent. Now, Korea has its own problems with its racism and anti foreign sentiments which as an American I don’t think I can touch on correctly.

    I have a small sliver of doubt that it wasn’t intended that way. Body type/size was also mentioned by another contestant pointing to Bada (who is noticeably taller than the other but just as Korean), where that person said that her frame made certain types of dancing look better. I watched the episode and someone did actually mention Bada’s height in conjunction to choreo looking better. However they were not accusatory doing so and did not make a dig at Bada’s work ethic or her deservedness.
    When I was very young I practiced ballet and they tended to feed you the idea that caucasian ballerinas looked better than me (East Asian, small since I was a kid) doing the dance partly because of their body proportions. I wasn’t even raised in Asia and taught there- they told me this in a Canadian class full of Canadian-Russian kids lol. It feels bad and I was a terrible dancer. I can’t imagine how bad it must’ve made Latrice feel.
    Even if it wasn’t intended to be racist, it was certainly an instance of a micro-aggression. I think it’s more than fair that international viewers to get mad, explain why it is wrong and ask for greater sensitivity.
    The comments on her IG are horrific though… There are quite a bit of accounts by foreigners who have attended Redlic’s classes and many say she’s actually super sweet and friendly to them irl. I’m not saying it excuses the statement, but maybe she isn’t a person you cannot reason with.

    A lot of dances originate from black culture. But that does not mean we just know how to dance because we are black. Some black people cant dance that well or don’t have rhythm. But she can’t just base it off that. This isn’t unexpected because in plenty of Asian countries racism towards black people is normal and an extremely common thing. Regardless if they do African dances because it looks cool but the skin color “isn’t”. Or they see us as dirty or scared to touch us for some reason. But that’s not fair to her because she did train and that was her passion. It’s all about how u do it. There are plenty of great dancers of different races and cultures. Just because hip hop was created by us doesn’t mean we all just know and it’s just easy everyone has to learn to be able to do anything in life.

    Huh? It’s not her attention that matters it’s how it was perceived! It was perceived as racist! The two dances were similar in physical stature! The only true physical difference was SKIN COLOR! That’s not sit here and pretend that there were any significant other physical differences other than skin color! They were similar in height, and they were similar in size! No significant physical differences, other than race! So to sit here and pretend that it wasn’t about skin color is intellectually cowardly! She faced other dancers in the competition that had significant physical differences in her and she didn’t complain then! it was about race! When you admit the problem, you can solve the problem if you have the courage to face and change the problem! Korean people that those dances you’re doing those beats you’re doing African-American dances and beats! Hip-hop that is black culture! So if you got a problem with a physical appearance of the people that created the dances and the rhythms that you now love you need to check yourself because you’re bout to wreck yourself! Insulting to pretend that that wasn’t about race! Just fix the problem! Confront the problem! Don’t pretend that people are being overly sensitive or that we always pull in the race card WHEN YOU PULLED IT FIRST! The young lady needs to confront her issues and be a better person! And Korean people who have those issues need to work on those issues too! We can learn to do better and we can be better! But pretending that colorism and racism exist in your society, won’t stop the problem! I know that is not all Korean people nor do I pretend that sometimes because of the racial issue that we have faced in the past, that people are not on edge or overly sensitive abt race YES WE ARE AND WE SHOULD BR GIVEN OUR PAST! We gotta learn from each other. We gotta interact with each other so we can learn how to interact with each other and do better.

    If you look at the reactions of others in the room, what she said was taken as as highly racist/inappropriate. Redlic is a sore loser and a bad representation of the spirit of competition.

    I’ve experienced this crap, I was a great dancer, gymnast, cheerleader, singer and my “friend” at the time, it was always “you are only good at it cuz your black, and black ppl were bred to be stronger and faster, so that’s the only reason your better then me.” Yea I obviously dropped that friend but there is always shame as if “I can’t change being black, but I give my all into everything just the same as you” and so never felt comfortable outing that girl for what she said. At least when I was little, as an adult nah, I hold her responsible for her words and actions (fb reconnects everyone, right?)
    Ppl need to be held responsible for their words & actions

    You know u can go to the choom and saw a video that latrice choreography chosen and then see the comment. There is a lot of korean comments at the top comment saying that “latrice choreography is bad rather than redlic, redlic choreography is good and i like it” and if u reply that comment u can see a lot of korean reply they agree with it and even they call out latrice “she said she doesn’t know the lyrics that’s why she just use the rhythm, u can dance without lyrics lmao, don’t just try to find reasons when the real reason is u can’t dance” if that’s not a racism then idk what is

    Latrice got my attention even more after Redrick's comment. Maybe Latrice is just more interesting in the way she dances. I have black genes and I don't dance very much. Latrice is just better imo. Redrick comes across as jealous.

    K, this is a bit lengthy so work w/me here. 1st- Everyone learn the difference between "Racism" and "Bigotry". It helps to know what you're actually talking about when passing judgment.
    As hard as it has been for ALL women to be seen, integrated and respected in Hip Hop, street dance and entertainment in general, ALL women artists and performers globally should be and should have been offended by these bigoted coments-FACTS!! **Plus, am I the only one who thinks its funny that she has a problem with how a women of color looks and dances within her own cultural wheelhouse, in a dace competition she volunteered to participate in?.... No? Nobody? Just me....lmao!! If the shoe were on the other foot and Latrice said it wasn't fair the other girl won when she's not even a women of color dancing Hip-Hop/Street Dance, the world would have demolished her so darn fast. Why is it always okay to disregard and disrespect people of color but we are never in the right no matter the response and most times, we are not even allowed to have a response?
    This competition is highlighting some of the very best female street dancers, internationally. It's a shame this young woman made the choice to be, act and speak with personal ignorance instead of embracing and enjoying the platform and level of excellence they are competing at. Everyone should just disregard her at this point. And Latrice and everyone else needs to stop acting like they are shocked and awed by this type of display on these type of shows. This attitude and speech is allowed, that is why it continues. None of the dancers, judges, nor production team checked her, or stopped her in her tracks. It made good TV to see the brown dancer humiliated globally by the other. And they are both women, both dancers, both will face similar challenges in the industry simply because they are women. And everyone there, every dancer, female judge, female producer, director, chief, professional who has ever had to fight extra hard and continues to have to prove herself let it happen. That's a shame. Ridiculousness!!

    She is coming up with excuses, cause anyone can make extreme facial expressions while dancing to make you feel where they are coming from. The stereotypes are bullshit

    What does effort is effort is to you . If you think dancing with all your might, but there is no expression in your dance ir what we call sauce no it is not about being fair , you just don't know how to dance. Dancing is with your all about using every part of your body and matching it to the rythm. And sometimes you don't have to go all hard it is about skills

    Theoretically speaking, something can be both a stereotype and be true. _"Blacks are innately fast sprinters; producing some of the worlds fastest men and women."_ This statement is equally stereotypical and true. It's stereotypically true.
