I'm a paramedic in Buffalo N.Y and worked this show, they turned his guitar off because of the rain,he was getting electrically shocked and he would not quit..
Johnny has such an interesting voice. It's scratchy but soft, soothing but powerful. I always say it's like an audio equivalent of your favourite worn woollen blanket.
It's like a warm hug from a biker.
Something about his voice reminds me of Heath Ledger.
That’s a great comparison. 100% agree. So comforting but there’s something so haunting about it at the same time. So soulful and experienced.
@@sisterdebmac Or a soldier!
Johnny is American, but his voice often sounds Irish.
Quite simply one of the greatest songs ever written. Can't imagine how good it feels for them to play this live.
Tough not to admit.
Johnny has a voice that is unrecreatable. There's something coarse yet smooth to it at the same time. He's someone you immediately recognize when he starts singing, there's no one out there you can confuse him for. And easily one of the best guitar writers and lyricists ever💪
The Goo Goo Dolls have been a pride of us Buffalonians for many years. Love to hear this one. This was a "concert in the square" in downtown Buffalo, and being a wonderful band, they didn't stop just because of a soaking rain!!
The fact that this took place in Buffalo makes this even better. And in the rain! Very proud of our guys!
I don't think a lot of people know how big and diverse Buffalo's contribution to music is. The Goo Goo Dolls, Rick James, Cannibal Corpse, Brian McKnight, Ani Difranco, just to name a few.
As a native Buffalonian myself, I still have this concert on DVD. Along with the 4 superbowl runs, this should be required viewing for every western new yorker!
@@BillGardiner I bought it too, from Record Theater on Main St. I had wanted to go to this concert, but my work had other plans.
@@johneagan5249 I moved out of the area after college (99), so this was a bday present from my parents. Haven't lived there in over 20 years, but just got back form a family vacation. My kids' first time to b-lo and they LOVED it!
Great choice of live version! This was live in Buffalo on July 4th 2004, and it poured for most of the show. It was a free concert and a once in a life time experience.
On the steps of City Hall in Downtown Buffalo NY, 4th of July weekend 2003. I was there it was amazing looking back at it now it was epic. Get chills watching this now, a time before cell phones we all just had a blast.
Singing in the rain. Literally. The show must go on.
Goo Goo Dolls are such an interesting band. Listen to their early stuff, its very early punk rock sounding. And then they slowly transformed. Even on "A boy named goo" you can hear their punk roots still bleeding through
I’ve always been impressed with his voice. He has an extremely recognizable tone.
Yes, "such a gorgeous melody," and such a lovely review. Excellent job, Beth.
I remember once on my birthday when my gf and I walked down Götgatan in Stockholm and Johnny stood outside a music store with a guitar, singing this song. A special memory that made this song different than it was before
This concert was absolutely epic, I was in the fourth of fifth row of drenched humanity on the 4th of July!!! They were told by management to postpone due to the horrible storm. Not wanting to let down their home town fans on Independence Day they played anyway!!!! Fun fact when they started they were a Punk Rock band!!!
This song really is the first song I fell in love with. I was barely 4 years old but I still remember watching the music video and being mesmerized. Now I'm 30 and a singer myself. This song and this band is the foundation of my love for music and I'm so grateful for them!
This is one of the only live performances from the 2000s that even old music fans admit is incredible.
This is like Stevie Nicks doing "Landslide", or Santana doing "Soul Sacrifice", or Disturbed doing "Sound of Silence".
Transcendent.
Air supply
I still love this song. Great melancholy.
SING IT FROM YOUR SOUL!!! Do more live Goo Goo Dolls.
One of the best performances, dedication to the craft and to their fans. Buffalo NY is where the band formed, this Is a thankyou performance for their fans.
Beth bopping her head in rythm to the song in the first minute of the song made my day😀
Thank you Nicholas Cage bwahahaha 😂😂😂
Thanks for sharing your incredible musical joy and knowledge
Dizzy up the girl will continue to be one of the best albums of the ‘90s. The album was solid from front to back. Like so many others have commented, Johnnys voice is very unique. It’s gritty and yet, refined. It reminds me a little of Tom Petty and Scott Weiand.
I've sang this one so many times, on stage and off. One of my all time favorite songs.
I loved your enthusiasm and smile while listening, made me smile as well. Great reaction!

Finally someone is reviewing this gem of a performance.
The best live performance i ever saw on tape if any.
Omg I forgot about this song!!!! You’ve brightened my day once again ❤️ lol
This song was messed over by Billboard on the Billboard Hot 100 list because it had not been released as a single. Those rules changed after this song had it's mega-run.
Saw them live not that long ago and they still sound great!
This is from a 4th of July show they played in 2004 in their hometown of Buffalo, NY. It was a "Hurricane like" Downpour for almost the entire show
To fall in love all over again with this soundtrack and Meg Ryan's character in the movie! - "When everything's meant to be broken, I just want you know who I am" - the line that hits home, every time!
G'day Beth,
Living in Australia Goo Goo Dolls were not on our Radar until City of Angels (1998), My Girlfriend at the time bought the Soundtrack & so I repeatedly heard Iris,
in '99 they toured Australia for "Dizzy Up the Girl" we went to the Sydney Concert & it was AWESOME! I have bought & Enjoyed all their albums since, they are one of those Bands that sound good recorded but take it up to another level & really include the Audience for their Live Shows, I also love how John & Robby sing the songs they write so while the style of songs on the albums complement each other they also stand out. They have quite a few songs on my 😯"I'm having a Bad Day, I need my uplifting playlist"😊
Great song. Matched by your excitement over sharing this and wanting desperately to turn it into a sing-song.
Johnny is pure living rock legend
I instantly get tears from this song now. I don't know why, it was never one of my favorites, but now I can barely make it to the end.
The greatest band ever to come out of my hometown Buffalo, NY. Greatest garage band ever!!
Fan girl Beth! Always great to see you throughly enjoy the song!
All time favourite tune. Easily one of the best ever
Just love John. He's such a wonderful songwriter, so real, so humble. And extremely witty.
GGD are from my hometown in NY and this was played here and yes it was pouring out. One of my fav songs to sing.
It's very natural and normal for one to be occasionally flat regardless of how well you can sing. It's just being human and I think it adds a lot to music with the imperfections. The lead singer here was about 51 years old too. Great performance.
Lifehouse-hanging by a moment ANOTHER GREAT SONG
Goo goo dolls are my favorite mellow rock/punk band. I grew up with the pearl jam, bush, garbage, goo goo dolls, Green day, hole, veruca salt, etc. Im still q rocker. I graduated in 99. So thats when bands came out that were still great
I saw the fan girl smile. I can tell you really like this song.
This live performance is epic!
He's singing IN THE RAIN! The pouring rain. In his home town of Buffalo on the 4th of July. Of course he might be flat at times..... watch other live versions. I think he kicks ass in this performance.
Would love to have been there in person.
Millennial anthem. Fun to see Beth rocking out to this
Saw them last week. It never gets old.
One of the most beautiful love songs ever written and performed. Where is this kind of music today among the auto-tunists, the prepackaged and formula rigid country western, RAP that has lost its soul and vocal singers who's audience is Simon Cowell. Music like Iris from the Goo Goo's is iconic and I wish we had more of it these days. It might help.
He also made my favorite Disney song from my favorite disney movie Treasure Planet
When the ticket says rain or shine, the ticket means it lol
If being flat is a bad thing for him it’s good, this is the best version of the song.
My favorite songs by Goo Goo Dolls are Black Balloon and Name.. such amazing songs but this concert took place in Buffalo (their home city) for free admission to a crowd of 60,000 on July 4th, 2004. The rain really came down hard that day
And Beth you are an awesome singer! wow 🤩
Thank you for reacting to this song. There's only been a few women that I have ever wanted to open up to this mucj. Mainly Julie K. I have finally given up upon her. But it took over 20 years. No one will ever replace her.
It kills anyone thats hurt. 💯
Reminds me, you should check out Bush “Glycerine” … the version of Gavin singing at MTV Spring Break in 96. He came out in the rain to sing for the crowd. The badn was told to Get off te stage cause of the storm. Gavin said “if they can be out there, I can too” and went and did one of the performances that has stuck with me most. I still vividly remember watching live
I love your roar.
It's so petite.
🤍
One of the few songs that sounds better wo any vibrato. The best song ever in the history of mankind.
I was at that concert it was pouring but that made it so much better
This might be one of the greatest opening lines ever written….
The guy playing the mandolin didn’t want it to get ruined so he’s standing in the area that’s covered. That’s why it’s not raining in his shot.
It’s a beautiful love song
Dizzy Up the Girl, one of the definitive albums of the 90's.
lo mejor es que su voz es idéntica tanto en estudio cómo en escenario en vivo. Increíble estos artistas
Great song!
Its a great performance. And a bloody fine song as well. The only thing is, so far as he is concerned, this is what he's going to be remembered for and will never be allowed to move on from. No matter what else he has done or will do, this is the one that they'll never let him out of the building without playing. Bit like James Taylor with Fire & Rain.
This is the thing with these huge songs. They take on a life of their own and once they've got under the public's skin, thats it. When these songs mean as much as they do to so many people... while the artist originally conceived it, wrote it, played it... it then starts to live and breathe on its own.
Its an amazing thing. Most writers would give their eye teeth, if they still had them, to write just one song of this magnitude that the public take to their hearts.
speaking of JT...... Beth should react to something of his live songs one of these days. Talk about effortless singing, over 70 and still sounds great. Fire and Rain, Sweet Baby James, Copperline, Carolina on my mind.. throw a dart at his set list and you hit a classic
@@bscjake and the man's voice ages like a fine wine! He sounds better the older he gets!
July 4th...Buffalo...POURING RAIN...More reasons to love the Goo!
You should watch the version from live at Daryl's house. Could be the best audio mix ever recorded
Could you react to I never came by queens of the stone age? For a rock band like them, the singer has such a smooth and clear voice.
I love this song and it was the song with many of my girlfriends and boyfriends when I was in jr high in the late.90’s
this is one of the last few songs i remeber whatching on mtv when they had the top 10 countdown videos and the pop up vidoes back when mtv was actually music televison lol
Love love love that you reacted to this one.
Staind “so far away” would be a good one
He spits out without being too loud
Makes sense... im gothic and i really love this song, now i know why (for the reference to create the song)
This song is really melodic, and lovely.
Check this out on "live from Daryl's House" with Daryl Hall. Amazing!
That show was the greatest thing on GPB. He's had so many amazing artists on there.
Holy smokes I just went and checked it out. What an incredible version of this incredible song thank you
i just love it how you insta turned into a fangirl :)
This song has always had a special place in my heart! Little bit of info…the 2nd verse was in some way (I don’t remember the exact link) a reference to self harm as someone who suffers with this I can relate xx
Love this song the title is from a lady named iris dement
This was the first song i taught myself on the piano when i was maybe 13. I havent played in years, but i can still play the melody
When you ask people if they could go to one concert in history - you get a lot of Live Aid, a lot of other shit
I think seeing this concert in Buffalo would have been the greatest thing ever. If time machines ever exist in the future - I'll be the old guy in the front row!
As a fledgling vocalist, it's hard for me to hit some notes here and there, even after switching keys for some songs. However, I've found that if the audience enjoys the performance, even with a couple of missed notes here and there, then it's all good. Thanks for normalizing that 😃
A song of his that brings me to tears is from Disney treasure planet
just for those who dont know... when standing in water... sitting on a waterbed and so on... yes... electric guitar will shock you in your fingers on the fretboard. i know. done it. its not fun but the fans are worth it. my compliments to the the ones enduring the pain.
It's essential to recognize that it was pouring and freezing on that day, July 4, 2004. Buffalo (Upstate New York) could get extremely cold. I'm from California and was stationed in USNY for a few years, and, man, I never got used to the cold.
😍😍😍
Home town boys done good; giving a home town concert in pissing rain. If they would have wimpled out it would have gone badly . . . persevere and they are legends!spoken
Always loved his voice. That movie is heavily inspired by a much better Wim Wenders movie btw.
Hello from Chile!
name by goo goo dolls is my fav
Hi,from Brazil!!
You really should check out Live from Darryl's house version of this, it's just incredible.
His voice seems to be deeper than it used to be
💕 This is where my granddaughters middle name is from, Iris 💕
That is a good Movie Soundtrack with Iris, of course; and Uninvited by Alanis and Angel by Sarah.
the bass gang just did an a capella version of it with the wonderful malinda. check it out ;)
The Goo Goo Dolls came out of the underground New York Punk scene in the early 90’s which is why they got the theme song for Freddy’s Dead
ANother Great song from JOhn the lead singer of The Goo Goo Dolls is I am still here for the disney film Treasure planet. It has to be the most underated disney song ever but gets swept under the floor because the film was ignored due to the fact it was marketed horribly. I did not know Iris was made for a movie but man this guy really gives it his all when asked to make a song for a film lol also I was so nice watching him live on TV for the ball drop in NYC as it was for year 2021 and the world was just getting back to normal due to covid and John went on stage almost immedietely after the ball dropped and it was so nice to hear Iris after the awful year 2020 was for the world.
Roar!
Another great song from the City of Angels sound track is, Angel by Sarah McLachlan
