I bought a felt hat at the National Chuckwagon races from a vendor, about 20 years or so ago, I’ve got a big ole empty head, hard to find ones that fit. This one I put one of my favorite roosters tail feathers in( rooster is named Manley, after my good friend who gave him to me) the hatband is one an old girlfriend gave me, the hat ain’t worth nothing, but it’s priceless to me. Reminds me of my old cowboy days. You are the “salt” hillbilly. Thanks for great info.
I agree with you about wet forming your hats to get the shape that your looking for. Best way is to just wear it when it’s still damp. It will take the shape of your head and lead to the most comfortable fit. That one looks good on you and the light color would make it a great hat to wear to church on Sunday. God bless and enjoy everyday. - Tennessee Smoky
Being an old mountain man born of Coeur d'Alene Country, lived most of my life in Wyoming. The hat a man wears and the way he sits a saddle is his identity. As for me I went to an open crown 30+ years ago. Buy them small, and take the sweat band out too. I did a video as well. Titled how to assess a cowboy. Recently I started buying the correct size, and leaving the S.B. in place. Mountain man
I do pretty much the same thing.. I have a very large head and seldom find a hat that fits so I soak them in hot water, scrub clean and force on my head until it feels right and wear it awhile then I use a bag full of bags to fill the inside as it dries, sometimes I need to repeat the stretching.. It a lot easier in the summer when you can wear it as it dries and forms to your head
The hat shop in town wanted one of mine to hang on the wall a few years back......I didn't let them have it. An old hat is like an old friend......pretty hard to give up on. I went with the "Festus" style round crown years ago because every hat I ever had that had a crease in the crown cracked over time. Then they leak. Ya ain't ready for a white hat yet....a hat should match your hair color more or less. Dark hair, dark hat, white hair, white hat. Then again, in the winter you'll blend in better. I do have a white one...more of a cream color. I like the way that looks. I'd leave it round topped if it was me. It does look good on ya. Hey, Dandy elk. Thanks for the picture!
Other then my original that's hanging aty daughters house I still have all of my old wore ones...Yes Sir they are old Friends...I wore the Ol' Beige one all day yesterday...Back to my Favorite today LoL
@@IdahoHillbilly NEAT!! He was always my favorite. I was making a extractor spring for my old Whitney Kenedy carbine out of a trap spring when I found out he died....I always wanted to meet him.
My main, number 1 hat I wear the most is by Conner Hats out of Australia. I bought it at a used western wear shop here in Vancouver. Cost me $25 dollars. It was almost brand new
Both of your hats are real nice! I call the white one, your Lone Ranger hat. LOL Back in the 70's, Grandma got me a hippie headband made of Indian/seed beads. I put it on my cowboy hat for a hatband.
Dude ... I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!! LOL The things I've learned off You Tube. Today? A very informative session on hat shaping! Much thanks from an Alabama Hillbilly!!
great video. that is useful information. i like the shape of your hat. it's distinct. i could likely recognize you at a distance by your hat and beard. i always train the back of my brim up because i often cary a pack and the brim pushes against the pack if it's downturned. i tried washing a hat with woolite once since it's made for washing wool. it made the felt way too soft and it wouldn't hold shape. i use dawn dish soap now. it works for me. never tried laundry soap. might try that next time. take care
I think you look sharp in that new hat. Hope you were able to find some 30-30 ammo. I found the that box of 30-30 ammo I have, there’s ten of them left in the box. I’m hoping I can get them sent off to you on Monday 9/ 26. I’ll email you when I get them sent off. You don’t need to pay me anything for them. They will be a gift 😉. Thanks for sharing. Take care, see ya :)
Thank You 🤠...WooHoo that's awesome! No luck finding any yesterday But did get a line on some last night. You don't have to do that...I can at least pay the shipping if you email me the cost 🤠
Hat looks great! With the price of wool hats today, you just about stole that hat. LOL Thanks for sharing your cleaning process as I would have had concerns about shrinkage.
Don't that shine! I've got a old bison felt stetson that was my bull riding hat about 17 years ago. It's been mistreated and packed in boxes and hung on walls and not really taken care of. I designated it my mountain man hat because the brim has gone flat and I already rounded the crown out when I got it. I may see if I can put some life back in it, my wife does some pretty good bead work too so I may see if I can sweet talk her into a nice band. Any tips or ideas to help restiffen one? I heard something about using cola before but I don't know. " I make damn good biscuits"
Don't get mad at me but the hat will look great with the white in your beard later on. LOL. Looks good and gives me some ideas about one of my hat's I wear.
I have a have dozen hats, and shape everyone. I haven't nor will ever wear a hat straight off the rack. I'm not a cowboy and that's a reason I shape them all. I can't stand an unshaped hat
