2017 Fisk Arrival into Oshkosh - Simultaneous Landing with T-6 Overhead

  • This was our first trip to Oshkosh, and it was a exciting one. We flew the Fisk arrival from Ripon on Friday morning (7/28/17) right before the field closed for the Blue Angels practice. We were wheels up out of Wichita, KS at 4am, and landed at about 9:30am in Oshkosh in a Cessna 182 Skylane RG.
    After one hold around Rush Lake, the video picks up before we were cleared for the right turn to runway 36. After turning final, we were instructed to go around because one of the B-29's was on final behind us. Coming back around on right base, we tried to mesh into the other traffic turning final, but went around again. On the second right base to final, we were instructed to angle it in and land on the yellow dot. Over the numbers, the tower told us to set it down as quick as we could for traffic above us.

      Little late to the party but it’s a team of controllers all pointing out, identifying, and organizing the traffic, but the single talking controller is having to take all the controllers talking on their side and say it over the radio! It’s a really neat system! He’s taking about 15 people’s voices all talking together as a team and doing ALL the talking! It’s super cool and there are a few videos online! :)

      Gary C. Being bracketed between ground and the overflying T-6, it is certainly one of those landings you should not mess up :) because go-around is NOT an option.

    • @xheralt
      @xheralt 4 года назад +1

      @@rnzoli meh, go-around is possible, but tricky -- it would require a hard turn out. If it's that or crash or overrun the T-6, then you go around...

    Thank you for posting this. I am a 700+ hour pilot and have flown in/out of Airventure 6+ times during slow and busy times. I was two aircraft ahead of your arrival in a Piper Lance. I was in the Rush Lake holding pattern too and got cut off by a twin - which shows how busy it was before even arriving to the runway. On base for Runway 36 I saw that B-29 ahead of me. (Awesome sight!) At 3:50 on short final I was instructed to go-around. You can hear the controller then instructing me to stay left of the runway and not overfly the crowd. At 8:51 I landed and was instructed into the grass. This was the most intense flying experience I've ever had. An experience (from holding to landing) that lasted about 30 minutes. Some suggestions for those planning to fly to Airventure: make sure you know every detail of the KOSH NOTAM that applies to your plans. Know your options (divert etc.) and be prepared to adapt/change your plan. Have a capable right-seater. Stay calm and fly the airplane.

      Its cool to hear from someone else that was in this mess with us! I had forgotten about it because of how the landing went, but now that you mention it, I do remember a twin flying around the inside of us in the hold as well and thinking, "What on God's green earth is this guy doing?"

    Been there, done that. Had to follow a J-3 Cub with a Cessna Skylane, coming in. The Cub did a good job keeping his speed up. I had to fly over him, on landing, just like the war bird, in the video did. We ended up being stranded there for 6 days, due to storm fronts rolling through every day. We only intended to stay for 3 days.

    I worked as volunteer for taxi assist and its very organized with a special NOTAM explaning all procedures.
    Last year they were landing on runway 18 busy as usual and a cherokee pilot tries to land 36 out of nowhere. This actually happened again several hours later with a Cessna trying to land 36 when ATC was clearing aircraft for 18.
    The FAA Tower personnel are all highly experienced at Oshkosh. They have eyes looking all over the sky.
    I was lucky to be on flightline during both the Cessna and Beach arrivals. Seeing 5 landing lights on final never end for ten minutes is impressive.

    Watching folks land at sun n fun with a radio within earshot is the greatest goat rodeo on earth. Most pilots aren’t used to landing anywhere but the end of the runway and many dive on the brakes and troll slowly down the runway. Meanwhile some equally inept twin driver is climbing up his tail not wanting to take it way down past midfield and land with end of the runway coming so close so fast. Lots of near stalls, hard landings, locked brakes and even a couple busted wingtips to show for a couple of them. Those sort of things are definitely nothing you want to just casually fly into unprepared unless it’s after hours. As for those controllers, wow, they really are the best of the best.
