I happen to run across this and this is the most insulting thing anybody has ever said about me. Anybody who knows me knows how ridiculous it is to say that I didn’t try and refused to shoot.
There is no truth whatsoever to me having looked at film at halftime and seeing that my teammates didn’t come to my defense when I had the altercation with Ricky Sobers. Even in the video that they showed you can see my teammates coming over to the confrontation. Whoever posted this should be ashamed of themselves.

The Warriors shot 40 percent in the field as a team. That's not how you win a seventh game. It was obvious that they lacked focus from the start. Lots of mental mistakes and missed shots that were imminently makeable. No one met expectations, head coach included.

All of the passes that Barry made were legitimate, it's just that the player didn't make the shot. They were all closer to the basket

This kind of thing happened to Barry all the time. My guess is that the Suns had Sobers muck it up with him on purpose. Wouldn't be be surprised if the idea came from assistant Al Bianchi, who coached Barry in the ABA. The Warriors made a mistake not to bring in an enforcer before the season. They needed one to prevent a potential replay of the Mike Riordan mugging in the 1975 NBA Finals.

I can understand why some would see Barry's body language on that chair and assume he was quitting, but that was his normal career body language for dealing with frustration. Sulky, pouty, whiney, but quite within the parameters of his normal on-court personna when angry at the refs, the other team, his teammates. Building an argument that he threw his team under the bus requires more than just watching his outward behavior/demeanor. And the notion that his teammates didn't come to his defense is overstated, they did come to the confrontation but weren't they further away to begin with?

Beyond that, you cannot compare players of different positions, and frankly different eras. The stuff players of Kobe's era and today get away with is crazy with palming, double dribbling, traveling, etc. makes it impossible to compare.
To me if a GOAT had to be chosen from all positions, it would be Wilt, but you cannot compare him to a forward nor a guard. The GOAT for shooting guards is Jordan in my view.
Neither Barry nor Kobe would be in my top 5 players for a starting dream team, but they might be in 2nd team 10. My comment about Kobe was not impugning his skill level which puts him likely in the top 3 of shooting guards. Rick Barry is a guy who has always been better than many human beings around him. Smarter, good looking, most talented, he is the one cracking jokes at your expense.
Some people are just too good and this creates animosity. Unlike Jordan, he didnt bother with his teammates to intimidate them and make them all obey.
He was too much of a gentleman to get on their level.
He was hated for being smart and went even after owners and sued them. First man in professional sports to do this. While everyone else would keep their heads down and get their pay - Rick demanded NOT TO BE EXPLOITED.
Remember people, every story has two sides. Rick Barry acted everytime in a fair manner. With him, everyone got what they deserved in one way or another.

The main reason why the Warriors didn't win in '76 wasn't because Barry didn't shoot the ball but because their team chemistry had deteriorated. Maybe the biggest fail was when the Warrior's owner, Franklin Mieuli, traded Butch Beard because he didn't like Butch Beard's wife - true story. Butch wasn't as talented as many guards but he was a high IQ player, unselfish, and was the glue for the Warriors title team. Barry did not cost his team the title in '76, that's a bunch of BS.

    • @RayManzarekRocks
      @RayManzarekRocks 3 года назад +8

I can vouch for the accuracy of this story, but it was GM Dick Vertlieb (not Mieuli) who had enough of Beard's wife. Beard knew the offense and personnel and had been the best true point guard on the team. Phil Smith was more of a shooter, and Gus Williams was too inexperienced for the role. The Beard trade played no small part in the outcome of the series.

It's a bunch of BS that Barry's teammates didn't come to help him. They were downcourt or on the bench on the other side of the court but came as soon as they realized what was going on. The real story with the Warriors -- and I went to almost every playoff game -- was that late in the seasons they began to lose their mojo. For a while there it looked like they might win 65 games or more, but they started to flatten out. They had traded Butch Beard, their point guard, in the offseason, so really didn't have a true point, and that started to catch up to them. Phil Smith was a brilliant player, but he wasn't a point guard and didn't run the offense that well. He had scored 51 points in a game and had come into his own, but he really should have been receiving passes, not initiating the offense. And the Suns were a classic case of a team that wasn't as good but started to peak just as their more talented opponents were coming down.
It was a great series, and the Warriors seemed like they were going to win it, but the Suns got a lot of luck and also just never gave up. They got a sort of miracle shot from van Arsdale to force a second overtime in Game 4, otherwise it would have been 3-1 Warriors going back to Oakland. And in Game 6 in Phoenix both teams hit clutch shots down the stretch, but the Suns ran a great play to get an open layup right at the end and win by 1. I really thought that the problem in Game 7 was Barry definitely getting thrown off his game a bit by Sobers' dirty play, but also that Phil Smith went shot-happy in the second half. He chucked up bad shot after bad shot and couldn't hit anything. He needed to move the ball but kept dribbling into double teams and firing away. But it was really a team-wide problem. They just seemed to lose their edge late in the season, and Barry himself has admitted that he was probably too demanding and might have burnt a lot of guys out. Nonetheless, the Warriors came back the next year and went to the playoffs again, this time losing a great 7-game series to the Lakers, as Kareem raised his already brilliant game to another level. The series was kind of a shoot-out between him and Barry, and the Lakers just squeezed by, only to be dumped by Bill Walton's Blazers in the WC Finals.

Far-fetched. Rick was a terrific passer and loved to enter the ball into the post. If I'm mad at my teammates, the last thing I'm going to do is pass to them. He was right back with the same team next year when he could have easily requested a trade. No way Rick Barry would intentionally play less than his best in a game 7. But I guess you can't get clicks without a hot take these days, so I'm not mad at you.

Phil smith shot only 2/7 from the charity stripe. The suns beat them in the backcourt and front court but maybe you were expecting Barry to be God ! Or maybe you hate him because he looked like a frat boy. Hate on westphal or Adam's ? If a sun played sub par that day it was only van arsdale 1/8. NBA is unlike football's 1x elimination game playoffs, or even baseball with its pitcher of the day( which is 80% of that game. ) However, I will say there is large market city favoritism because tv revenues are there. Scrolling the list of nba champions there are a handful of repeat champions but they have marquee value and payrolls. It's just so hard for cities like atlanta, phoenix, minneapolis ( former laker home) , okc, salt lake , milwaukee, sacramento, San Diego ( 2x folded ) , new orleans, indianapolis. Memphis. dallas, charlotte, Orlando, cleveland , portland , seattle,( now defunct, ) to break out of the pay roll, media , cycle. They may challenge even sometimes retain stars but there have been just a handful of championships . Few owners are willing to put up the money . And theres a lower proportion of the collective money for them. San Antonio's run being freakish aberration like Detroit's. And houston. You need to get real, read Sports in America by Mitchener as a starting point in the late 60s early 70s and update from there the end of the celtics dynasty. For years Golden for example under Meuli wouldnt spend. When they finally got ownership that would they made a run. But now that's crumbling . This would make the bigs more of a factor than this 5 out europe ball and more of a longer all court game bringing the mobile rim protectors stock up.
