Before you criticize this era just remember that the carrying rule was strict back then, your hand had to be on top of the ball at all times. If elite players like Rick played today they’d easily adjust, especially with a 3pt line

It was a different game back then but Barry could have adapted to any era. Barry was extremely quick and is one of the greatest all-time from the triple threat position - shoot, pass, or drive. He would have easily adapted to the modern, over the top ball handling rules because he was so quick and coordinated. I once saw the dude hit a game winning shot shot while falling out of bounds in a game he had over 50 points. Lol

eb There is a difference between quick and fast. For example, Larry Bird was slow as in foot speed but had very quick hands. I’d say Barry had average speed getting up and down the floor later in his career - although he had good endurance. When he first came into the NBA he was faster when he averaged 35 a game and was more of a slasher. Throughout his career he had quick hands in addition to a highly developed court sense like all the great players.
As far as Barry’s speed goes, he also had to adapt his game after a knee injury because he lost speed and jumping ability. But he was still great - the year he led the Warriors to the title he averaged over 30 a game and the offense went through Barry.

I think there should be a stronger emphasis of showing the 60s-70s of the NBA. There were a lot of great players like Rick Barry that are forgotten. Many causal fans think less of this era but they should really watch the videos.
I like the 70s more especially after the merger. Brent Barry put it best when they talked about the decades on Open Court.
The NBA in the 70s has parity and balance, there were no dynasties as opposed to other eras like the 60s Celtics, 90s Bulls, and even now with the Warriors.
I watched some games from that era and it was about as entertaining as a wet slice of bread being thrown at a wall. Modern NBA is so much better

@@kobealegendforever1310 I have an appreciation for Cliff Ray I may not have when this happened. He was tough, relentless and a good passer. He was more than willing to do the little things while Rick and to a lesser degree, Jamaal Wilkes, shined. Type of guy you need to win.

How does that make sense
Barry is an all-time great for sure - he was a great passer, great shooter, and was extremely disruptive on d because he was such an intelligent player. Early in his career he was more of a slashing player that was really quick to the basket. With injuries and age he developed his outside shot and was good deep shooter. Barry was a great scorer that adapted his game over time but was also one of the greatest passing forwards of all-time. The dude was flat out great.
He was all you say. A truly outstanding passer, regardless of position who really made the game easier for his teammates.
One of the very few players in NBA history along with Steve nash and Hakeem Olajuwon who for a brief period were better past the age of 30 than they ever were in their 20s when they were physically better.
@G23Farrakhan52 I think he was just a flat out scoring machine in the NBA before he left for the ABA.
When he came back to the NBA in addition to being a very good scorer I think he was a much better passer his sole title year than he ever previously was. He didn't have this sort of vision during his 1st tenure as a Warrior.
I might be mistaken but he was like the first "point forward" in NBA history. I cant think of another small forward prior to him with his vision. Baylor was a more athletic/acrobatic 1 on 1 scorer, but not someone who was renowned for court sense/passing. Havlicek was more of a less ball dominant movement type scorer.

@G23Farrakhan52 I recall reading that too. I believe it might have been in the Sport magazine article. Then a year or two later I read that only Gus Williams could beat him in the Sprints. And Gus was a rookie who came in a year after they won the championship in 75. Gus was a 6-2 guard and Rick was a 6-8 forward
@Keenan Powell I saw that Sixers team and they were great. Who else did the Sixers have besides Wilt? The Sixers from line was great with Wilt, the powerful PF Luke Jackson, and SF Chet Walker. Chet the Jet could flat out score throughout his career and was so smooth. That was also Wali Jones' prime and was damn good. Let's not forget that the Sixers had the Kangaroo Kid, Billy Cunningham, coming off the bench. Billy could jump out of the gym before he got hurt (later) and he could flat out score and had a high basketball IQ. Here endeth the lesson son.

Rick Barry may have been a total douchebag, but you can’t argue his greatness. He was a great shooter, strong with the ball and is one of the best passing forwards of all time. He could transition to today’s era relatively seamlessly compared to other greats of the past.

On ball, off ball, Rick was such a sound player. Could give you 40 face up if he had to, but he could also get 40 on cuts, transition, and just lurking in the right holes in the defense.

Al Attles masterfully managed his lineups that year. Taking nothing away from their abilities, the others performed their roles well but, they knew when to lean on Barry too.

This guy was forgotten by the press...he was not likable, notice how nobody picked him up off the floor---but in his first two seasons he was as good as anyone who ever played basketball--he came back from knee surgery but was never the same--still pretty good!
The thing is this Bullets team was really good. I mean Unseld and Hayes? Who did GS have besides Barry? This was a one man show: Barry. One of the top five SF ever.
Chenier was a top 5-8 guard at the time. He consistently hit about 20-23 ppg. And a good rebounding G as well.

Barry was Kobe Bryant's one true predecessor, right down to the hardcore perfectionist mentality and prickly attitude towards teammates who just didn't understand the kind of cloth he was cut from. Had the complete all-around game, much like Jerry West at the time but at the small forward position instead. Too bad there's not much footage of him from his younger days with the Warriors when he showed off lightning quickness on the hardwood (hence the "Miami Greyhound" nickname he was tagged with). Knee injury he sustained while with the ABA's Oakland Oaks during their championship 1968-69 season took away some of that blazing speed, but he still adapted successfully en route to a first-ballot HOF career. BARELY edges out Wilt Chamberlain for greatest Warrior of all time, in my not-so-humble opinion.

If you want to be real about it Rick Barry’s personality is the precursor to Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. It’s crazy how similar Jordan Barry and Bryant are in personality.
Barry along with Olajuwon and Nash are probably the only 3 players i ever saw that peaked and for a brief period had their best level of play past the age of 30.

Rick Barry was and still is the John McEnroe of basketball. Very opinionated, controversial, had many arguments with refs, gritty, but he was a prolific scorer with an impeccable midrange game.
Make fun of his free throw technique if you want, but it worked! I love how on a number of them he started running back down the court without even waiting to see if they went in, because he knew they were going to.

I wish I could have watched more of Barry playing than I got to, back then. He could play the game extremely well, and looks like had a high basketball IQ. I know it has been said that he had an abrasive personality, but I don't care. He had the courage to shoot that granny free shot, at 90%, mind you. At present, as far as I can tell, he has been the only former great player with courage enough to publicly call the NBA management on the traveling, ball carrying, moving screens , etc., that are not being called by the refs, as they should be.

Both sports have changed by either restricting or relaxing rules to ALLOW.... keyword: ALLOW... more scoring and dynamic play.
People wanted to see more Globe Trotter stuff so the NBA relaxed many rules to ALLOW for it.
The NFL restricted DBs press coverage, downfield contact, hits on receivers, etc... hits on QBs so much so they might as well eliminate them from being tackled and attach flags on them like flag football, etc...
Here is one thing nobody picked up on from that era that is different from this era.
You played your NATURAL game and NOT a cloned game whether NFL or NBA.

TODAY... instead of letting players play their natural way they bring in people to coach them to change how they shoot foul shots and how to throw the ball as a QB despite being successful through college. Then people wonder why some of these QBs fail.
If you feel they need changing then don't draft them.

This is why I don't like when people my age (I'm 23 btw) say all players from the 1950s-1970s were all scrubs, there were clearly players that would have dominated or played incredibly well regardless of era, and if they played today with the level of emphasis of developing skills and perimeter oriented games guys like; Barry, West, Maravich, Archibald and Big O would thrive nowadays.
Remember the early days of basketball absolutely favoured great centres and interior scorers.

This was 1975. I don't understand why the NBA took so long to put the three point line into the league. It didn't happen until the 1979-1980 season! The ABA had the three point line in 1968! The NBA felt too proud to put it in???
