- Today we're taking a look at how our favorite company almost went completely bankrupt in the early 2000s thanks to some terrible business decisions! I actually don't think the toys are that bad but just not what you would expect from LEGO.

You did a really great job on this topic. There are still people who try to discredit bionicle, and while it certainly was not the only reason that lego stayed afloat during troubling times, it deserves credit for the success it brought lego. Especially with Star wars and Harry Potter making them less due to the licensing costs that bionicle didn't have.
The lego room is not complete until you accompany that popcorn asbestos ceiling with asbestos insulation and carpeting

Another great video. Also, if you take the bookshelf out of that little alcove in the Lego room and replace it with built in shelves that extend to each side of the wall, you'll get a lot more storage space (I just did that with my archaic DVD collection and it opened up a whole new world of space)

With Bionicle... I actually don't like the line so much, but that's because Bionicle had a predecessor: THROWBOTS. Or Slizers, as there were known in other countries. 8 robot characters (Torch, Ski, Turbo, Scuba, Amazon, Jet, Granite and Electro), 4 other ones (Flare, Spark, Blaster and Millenia) and a mysterious backstory. I have four of them (Ski, Turbo, Granite and Electro) and boooy, did I enjoyed them a lot!
So, when Bionicle came out, I was just sad Throwbots got replaced, and I didn't like Bionicle's aesthetics.
But wow, it's interesting to know that 2 of my least favorite themes actually saved LEGO. That puts a lot of perspective for me n_n

The Galidor Console game WAS released, at least for PC. I played it as a kid after I found it in some bargain bin, thinking it would be good because Lego had its logo on it. I could not pass the first level because the cutscene glitched and kept repeating after allowing me a minute of gaming
Bionicle helped to save their parent company from bankruptcy yet only gets the odd scrap tossed their way from LEGO these days.
Methinks a little more gratitude is required on LEGO's part but I might just be fanboying.

A lot of people blame Galador for nearly killing LEGO, but it was just the icing on LEGO's bankruptcy cake. It was the increasing number of specialized molds (for reasons other than the typical AFOL "it's better brickbuilt" complaints) increasing overheads and the fact that many of the motorized and fiber optic sets cost more per unit to produce than they were selling for. LEGO had WAY too many loss leaders, and Galador was just the most noticeable of them because it was _also_ a bad product line on its own.
The idea of a loss leader is a product that loses money on its own, but increases overall sales of other products. Problem is, when you have more loss leaders than money makers, you lose money.
As for why LEGO did this, it's actually because they didn't realize they were doing it. They only discovered it during the auditing process, before then LEGO actually didn't really have an accounting department.
Similarly, Star Wars only actually became profitable by the time LEGO had already managed to escape bankruptcy. It provided LEGO with some much needed financial stability, but Bionicle was the theme that pulled LEGO out of the hole.
I was 13 in 1998, so it was a good time for Lego to go in the toilet since I was going into a "dark age". The last few sets I got as a kid were total garbage, very few pieces and really odd builds. I do remember as a teenager a few people my age talking about how cool Bionicles were, although I never actually got any myself. I didn't buy a Lego set again until I was around 27, and it was an X-Wing, whichever the newest one was at the time. Your video is spot on with Star Wars and Bionicle bailing Lego out. Between Galidor and their own shitty set designs at the time, they really are lucky to have not gone bankrupt

Lego could make more money if they put out more castle sets at different price points. I need a rerelease of the “war crimes” set with the cart and five/six soldiers. They could make them with the different factions and I would buy multiples of multiples. At this point I am forced to go to pick a brick and wait over a month to get my entire order🫤.

i could curse lego for making this because it robbs me off all my hobby money each month since 2003.
but i am also lucky to have been in this for so long because i have had many old sets since they were released. thus i didn't have to buy them for 6 times as much 15 years later on ebay used.

I think the kind of dismissive remark about Bionicle didn't save the company by itself is bordering on misinformation. I'm not going to ignore or lie about the succeses of Star wars and Harry potter LEGO sets they certainly did not carry the company in the way you make it sound like in this video. To LEGO Star Wars and Harry potter were more about the experimentation of how to keep the longevity of the lego brand alive meanwhile Bionicle was the powerhouse LEGO needed not only to continue experimenting but staying in buisness while doing so. So while its fair to say that LEGO Star Wars and Harry Potter played a part in building up the companies back bone again and its not fair to say that Bionicle was just the side hustle. Because if Bionicle didn't exist the licensed theme model we have today literally wouldn't exist.

@@pooletrainboy I owned 1 Bionicle set and had a few of the McDonald's toys. They were cool but I never understood the appeal. Star wars as a Lego series is so exhausted at this point it's just tragic. As a franchise I find it decent but it's also become quite stagnant character wise.
I don't necessarily collect Lego but classic town, city, knights, system, and pirates always looked cool esp in commercials. My favorite series are Paradisa, Studios, Atlantis, and Batman/DC.

Someone has to say it, and I don't see anyone else saying this so i will. Bionicle is the theme that almost killed Lego, no question about it. the reason it almost went bankrupt was the introduction of many new pieces and Bionicle included way too many new pieces. Aside from it being the worst Lego theme of all time it almost killed Lego.

In 2003 almost every Lego theme on the market made Lego lose money. Even Star Wars and Harry Potter were not profitable, as Lego did not predict that demand would decrease when the franchises didn't launch a movie for that year. The additional licensing costs also took their toll.
The only theme that made money at the time was Bionicle, 25% of sales, 100% of total net income. Though Bionicle sales had also dropped about 20% compared to the previous year.
2003 is the reason why the CEO back then said that Bionicle saved the company.
