Thank u so much for this video, God Bless u. As a woman I have big arms, it just runs in the family and I cannot tell u how many blouses for work I had to pass up because they fit perfectly in the chest and stomach area but not the upper arms, so embarrassing because if u go a size up your clothes look frumpy. I don't have a machine but I can sew by hand so now I know how to fix my blouses in the future. Usually I buy solid color blouses for the office so it should be easy to find matching material.
This comment makes me happy! I hope it helps you out when altering your tops. Luckily its such a small area to fix so hand sewing shouldn't be too bad, in fact it might make sewing the corners less frustrating haha
Thank for intoducing me to gusets. I love your re-fasions.
For casual shirts, I like to add batwings to make them bigger down the entire side and arms (fave t-shirts that have been outgrown). I've never done a gusset, but it doesn't look as daunting as I thought it would. I hate my upper arms so I have learned to add a coordinating hem to short sleeve shirts and it helps tremendously. I don't know why it is so hard to find flattering shirts with 3/4 length sleeves.
I'm right there with you! My arms are not proportional to my body. I love wearing long sleeve button downs, but I have that same problem with almost every single one I try on! So glad to have a fix for this now!
Missy u
I love how you actually do something to the clothing and you don't just crop the bottom. Most videos I come across that have the title "thrift flip" are total crap. Thank you for actual quality content!
Yes, I agree. It’s a waste of time watching videos that have on the title what I’m looking for and end up just cutting pieces of fabric and claiming it’s done. Some of them put tape, glue and even nail polish instead of hemming it.
Great gussets well done for a first try. I'm a Granny and have been sewing for more than 40 years. A big thumbs up.
That gusset fix is so useful. If you want to sew it perfectly, you can sew a couple of stitches at each of the four points of the diamond to the shirt, and then use your machine to actually sew it. That way it can't move around as much.
wow thats a great tip! Thank you for sharing!
@@coolirpa ... Love the community you have creative !!! All supporting one another and adding little helpful tid bits along the way !! You Rock !!!
i love it when u give some good advice to us like 'don't be so hard on yourself', becoz i can be quite a perfectionist and be frustrated if it doesn't go too well. Love your Diy videos so much coolirpa
Omg april the gusset-fix is just what I needed! I've recently made a dress that I spent SO long on but realised too late that the arms are too tight on me. I was so upset about it but now I don't have to be anymore :D
i just did the gusset thingy BY HAND SEW on my tunic cus the arm hole is too small... im so proud of myself and thanks to your video for explaining it very well!❤️
The underarm gusset fix is brilliant. I'll be using this often, thank you.
I followed your steps on the gusset to enlarge the arm area and applied it to a cosplay that was too small. I had to modify it along the way but it gave me a general idea on what I should do. Thank you so much you are a lifesaver!!
Much love!
Hi April ! I'm Parisian and I follow your videos since quite a long now ! I'm glad you liked our city even though I feel sad for not having met you ! Anyway, keep up your great work, you definitely played a decisive role in my passion for sewing.
Greetings from France 🇫🇷
I love watching you fix and adjust these thrift store finds! I love thrift shopping, finding treasures, but have no real idea what to do after I get home. So, thank you so much for all this awesome demonstrations, how to’s and hacks! I’ve saved hundreds and never tried a single one! My son calls me a “collector” because I love finding great thrift pieces, but they’re in a basket, waiting for some love! ❤️💜😍🐝
I just want to say how much I love your channel, April! I taught myself to sew and you inspire me to get back to my machine and start designing again! Thank you for all you do!
This tutorial helped me salvage a beautiful 3/4 sleeve dress from the thrift shop. Like you said, even if it wasn't sewn well, it ultimately solved the issue and made it so much more comfortable to wear and be able to move my arms!
I made almost all my clothes in high school (1969 to 1974) and later made all of my daughters (x2) prom dresses etc.
BUT my family made it a point to leave the house while I was sewing, lol.
I'm not really a finishing sewer. I hate hand sewing, seam ripping and those little things one does to make the garment look ~ well, finished. This video reminded me of having to put a gusset in a maternity shirt 40 years ago (I'm SO old) when pregnant with my first child. I think I made six gussets for each side. It was a favourite loose shirt but my boobs and belly needed more room after my 7th month. Oh the frustration! I swore I'd never do another!
Beautiful work!

Great share Jenn !!!
I’m right there with you (I’m 57)! I remember learning gussets in home ec. The kids reading this are thinking, “What’s home ec?”
@@tryingcake101 I had home ec, and I'm only 22. We never learned how to make or alter clothes though. We only learned how to sew a button back on and fix holes. Most of it was cooking and how to set a table for fine dining with the many forks and such.
Yep, that was a time when it was way cheaper to buy fabric. Now, not so much because (well I just won’t say it).
that sounds amazing, you sound like a cool mom too. i wanna be like you when im older😌
I have done lots of alterations but have never done a gusset. I am definitely going to have to try that. I love your channel and have gotten lots of inspiration from your many videos and have done a few transformations of my own.
I just found your channel and I am very impressed with how you are able to see something new in “old” clothes. You have given me some great ideas. I am also impressed with how great your videos are, very clear and clean presentations. Thank you.
You are a genius for the gusset idea! I just bought a nice long sleeve shirt on line, it fits me perfectly on the body, but the arm hole are super tight. I don't even have big arms. The design is off. I was going to return it, but then I thought about finding a video showing how to fix it. I am so lucky to find your video! Other videos usually require to take the sleeves off and re-cut the arm holes. That is just too much work for me. Thank you !
This is wonderful info! I had this problem with a blouse I thrifted recently, and I really wanted to tailor it to fit but wasn't sure how! Your instructions made it so simple!
This video helped me so much! The dress I ordered for my sisters wedding fit everywhere but my arms, it was such an easy fix to add in a small gusset and it fit perfectly!
Nice trick with the gusset - tight shoulder/upper arm is something I frequently struggle with as an athletic women.
Video idea: I‘m thinking about organizing both my clothes/shoes in general and my fabric stack/patterns with an app, to make shopping more organized/purposeful. There are quite a few around by now....and while it’ll be time consuming to take all those pictures and get the thing going, I think it‘ll be worth it longtime. I end up buying stuff I like and not stuff I need or that matches stuff I already have way too often!
Or I see a fabric I love and end up not buying it, because it’s kinda expensive and I don’t know exactly how much I would need for a given project.
Would love some input on it, if you happen to be bored 😉
I'm a pretty experienced seamstress and costumer and I have to say you make an excellent tutorial. I do have a suggestion. Several adjustments you show require sewing parallel to the original seam. However, you don't make a marking to show the seam line, which works all right for those of us who have been sewing for years--but might be daunting to a novice. There's a lot of ways to mark a seam line, including chalks, pencils, tracing paper, etc. My favorite now is not a sewing notion at all, but a pen put out by the Pilot company. The model pen is called Frixion, and it comes in a lot of colors, in ball point, and in marker. Of course it's available on Amazon. The joy is that the marks vanish with heat. That means that once you've sewn your new seam while you're pressing it the marks will disappear! Now if you leave them on too long--say three or four days, they WILL become permanent and on SOME fabrics (in three years this has yet to happen to me,, I found out about it from the lady who told me about the pen) that it MIGHT leave a white spot. So, as always, TEST FIRST in a place nobody will see.
Lastly, I want to especially compliment you on the gusset tutorial. A gusset is actually one of the most difficult techniques to learn, and a lot of novices are afraid of them--if they've heard of them at all. Surprisingly, once you've figured out the first one, most people seem to be surprised that it's really not that hard--just fiddly. And oh my, what a difference a gusset can make! Bravo on de-mystifying. To your viewers reading this: I repeat that this is one of the hardest techniques to master--meaning that if you've got this one, you can tackle anything! My own instructor told me over 50 years ago this one rule: The more you fuss the better it will look. Follow the directive to take your time. You might want to practice on an old shirt you're going to be throwing away before you do it on the new one. But I promise you it works, and if you follow the directions to go S-L-O-W-L-Y and take your time, it will look GREAT!
This is a well done, informative, and helpful video. Thank you so much for producing it.
I just want to say, your videos made me want to sew again. I got a sewing machine and I've made a dress into a skirt/shirt combination! Thanks for the inspiration!
You are killing it in that sweater!
Thanks for the video on opening up tight shoulders. I need a quick fix for the shoulder back/armhole seam on jackets, they are also too small. The tension gives me a neck ache.🖖
She is the best I have see for recreating thrift store to fashion. I love watching her videos! The before and afters are amazing!!
Wow! I just realized that i can even fix tight long sleeves. From now on, I'm not afraid of buying clothes on my own size from online shopping. Thanks for the tips.😊
These quick fixes are super helpful! My mum had actually shown me how to do invisible stitches to re-hem trousers recently, after I accidentally took out the old invisible stitches she had done on some vintage red jeans she's had for like 30 years. So useful cus I'm short and have skinny lower legs xD But the gusset part is the next bit I need to conquer!
Great tutorial on gussets. I remember my mom sewing gussets into certain clothes, tailored, I think, and teaching us as kids about them. I know how to do them but not sure when to use them... other than what you showed. I think they were standard fare for a little cross stretch, back when fabrics didn't have much give and styles were more structured. Your use of them is genius. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the quick fix video. The last one on making a shirt fit better in armpit areas is an excellent way to go. Please keep these videos coming!
Very cool. Look at you with your gussets and blind hems! Great video, April. And yes, I'd definitely love to see more in the Quick Fix series.
Thank thank thank. I have this awesome rust colored short dress with an asymmetrical hem. The only thing that was wrong with it was the sleeve was too tight. Everything else about the dress fits me wonderfully. Now I can wear the dress comfortably along with my thigh-high boots. Thank you so much
Her top is why im trying to learn how to sew.
It so flattering and doesn’t look like it’s complicated to make !
I am currently struggling with creating sleeves for a beautiful gown, I want to wear to two weddings. The dress came without sleeves. I took a blouse, I had, apart and I try to fit the sleeves into the armholes in a fitted way that lets me lift my arms when dancing. Not as easy as it sounds! The fabric is gorgeous and works perfectly with the rest of the dress. I might try a guesset. Not sure yet if I need one but thank you so much for the instructions! I have a better understanding of sleeves after watching this! This will help with my adjustments. Your instructions are awesome and inspiring!
omg thanks, my arms and shoulders have gotten a bit bigger since I started powerlifting so now it's harder for me to find shirts that fit well into my body but that have big enough sleeves. This is great!
I love the armpit gusset fix. I would have never thought to do that one. My granny used to stitch a triangle gusset in the center back seam of my grandads pj's and boxer underwears as his waist line got bigger!
so awesome!!!!
Love the Burgundy cold shoulder top your wearing!!!!
Thank you! I thrifted it on thredup :D
@@coolirpa i want, we wants a blouse like your! Diy pleaseeeeeee.
You are so talented! Kisses from Brazil!😚👏🏽👏🏽
@@coolirpa i was gonna comment on your top too. Can you show us how you made it?
Yes ... That burgundy sweater is gorgeous and is the bomb on you !!! Great color for you as well !!!!
I really really like your videos please keep up what you're doing.. I love sewing so much that it runs in the family.. my father used to work as a tailer and I went with him to his work place so many times.. I learned a lot of things about sewing but now I quit doing that cuz i studied another major.. anyway.. your videos take my back to the old days.. thank u
Funny thing is the other day I had to put a similar gusset onto my sons rugby style top. His arms were too big on one sleeve. The company who made it obviously put a size M sleeve onto a xxl top. So I added a (3" wide piece strip b/c you need a bit to use for edging) I ended up with a 2 inch thick "strip" (not a triangle)of material that I cut off his black old t shirt. I sewed it from armpit to elbow. Perfect!
I have been wanting to know how to do that last alteration for the arms for soooo long. Thanks a bunch. Will absolutely be doing this to loads of items in my closet. ✂️✂️✂️ Excited overload 🤯🤪🤗
You are lucky you found a fabric so similar for your gussets!! That’s the hard part, so it isn’t so obvious!! Good job!
This is so life changing....I can't buy so many things because of my arms... I've been gifted a few things that I also can't wear for this reason. I feel like starting right now to start fixing some of these jackets and blazers.
Thanks for the too-tight sleeve fix! I've been thrifting and sewing my own clothes for decades, but for some reason I've always just given up on tops with too-tight sleeves. Next time I'll take it home and give it a try!
I absolutely love how every time I search for something on how to fix something or make something particular one of ur videos always pops up love your videos ❤️❤️
YES, I want to see thrifted quick fixes and thrifted everything. You rock! I'm so glad I found your channel!!!
These are great tips!! I've had to leave so many gems behind at thrift stores because I didn't know you could fix them so easily! Thanks so much for this inspiration :)
I thrifted a lovely shirt a while back that ended up too small in the arms, and I was thinking of adding a gusset but after some time sitting in my project pile I ended up just tossing it back into my thrift pile to get rid of. I think now I'll try out adding a gusset! Thanks!
Thank you sometimes things don't fit the way I want them to so tailoring my own clothes seems like a cheap alternative
Oh and enlarging an armhole I did for a knitted sweater that had scrunk 😳. I had to find it out myself too but also made a diamant shape. Turned out great!! Yours too !
I definitely, would love to see more videos from the work you do. You are a very talented, gifted, young lady who loves what you do. Please continue with the great job you are doing.
I've been following you for years and get more compliments from clothes that I repurpose from your ideas than I do from SFA or my Nordys clothes.
Great quick fixes. Learned something new regarding the gusset? Also, taking the hem to 1/4 inch between each stitch is a great recommendation. It is one I will use moving forward. I have always used a 1/2 inch and find it to catch on my heels sometimes. Thank you. More videos please.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVE your videos! I know how to sew really well but I do not have a good imagination so watching your videos gives me great ideas! Gussets have always intimidated me but after watching this I'm a lot less frightened by them. Lol. I'm also much more limited on what I can make to wear that looks good on me as I am much larger than you. (size 18). But you're so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing your talent and I will keep watching as long as you keep posting. Also, I just have to say, my favorite transformation of yours is when you made a fall jacket out of a printed pair of paints (that has an ombre waist) and an over sized denim dress. SO CREATIVE!!!. I would love to see you make a winter coat at some point. Again, thanks for sharing your ideas and talent. God Bless!
your channel first interested me in refashioning thrift finds....and this one (enlarging arms on a garment) is particularly helpful for me-i most often have to make thinks a bit looser-thanks a million.
Ahhh thank you for the gusset insert for the armhole tip.
Omg thank you so much..especially for that last tip. I was wondering for many days how I should fix the sleeves for the shirt I ordered online, now it seems much easier than I thought
More like this quick fix videos please!!! Love them! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for the video
Yay! I have shirts that fit me, but I have loved to transparency (and a hole or two) in the armpit area. Now I can breath a bit more life into them. I will also give this a try on a thrifted shirt that I would normally pass on because of the arm fit. I have had to give a pass on many in the past, but now I don't need to! 😊
Great Video I'm a Teacher and I will be showing this to my students. They will be trying some of these Quick Fixes Thanks You
THANK YOU!! I really needed this alteration to increase the size of the upper arm on garments. Wow!!
please make more quick fixes. i am a new to sowing and even the quick fixes are a little bit challenging so professional solutions are no option for me. i habe so much cloths that i almost like and with these quick fixes i like a lot of them now😊
I am so excited to watch this! I have a feature that is sometimes referred to as "farm girl arms" lol so I love that you did this video. Most tops and coats fit me everywhere except my big ol guns. Thanks April!
I love these! Can contrasting underarm fabric be a new trend? I actually liked it and almost wish it didn’t blend in so well. It’ll be the new elbow patch 😉 These fixes are lifesavers; thanks so much for sharing them!
Mandy .... Kinda cool idea !!! Like that !
I saw that they can. For a safe bet use the color that is already in the pattern
Whatever you do don't use white as it might stain with sweat or deodorant or yellow for obvious reasons. Lol
April I love the gusset trick it’s perfect for what I need thank you
I literally just bought a linen T-shirt that’s nice, but fits oddly when I try to move my arms. This is perfect timing. It will also let me revive my favorite, slightly shrunken, Night Vale tee.
the sleeves fix was really useful. I have done this to pants but never thought about underarms!
Sewed my own shirt with the exact same sleeve problem as that last shirt. Going to try the solution now!
Thanks for watching and commenting down below! The top that i'm wearing in this video is also THRIFTED ;) I loved learning how to sew a gusset and hope it helps you too. Also don't forget to check out my second channel for more videos from me
Love watching what u do ur awesome
Wondering how the gusset would look if you had gone with a solid color (black or gray). Would it stand out more or...?
i love it when u give some good advice to us like 'don't be so hard on yourself', it really helps for a person like me where i can be frustrated if things do not go too well. Love your Diy videos so much coolirpa
I think the red top your wearing is so incredible ✨
Can you tell us the title name for this thrift fix? That way I don’t have to go scrolling through all your videos T^T
Plus cause red long sleeves + your channel name, did not come up with the video in the search results.. >~
You could have used a stretch fabric for the gusset. Good demonstration though!
Could you show how to turn bellbottoms or wide leg pants into straight leg or skinny pants?
Usually. (Idk how shed do it) but put them on. Have someone go down ur leg on the side and staple or pin the excess cloth together following your curves. Then use that as ur guide to sew down.
@@pirateorona92 then do a small zig zag on the edges so the fabric doesn't unravel
The other easy way you can do that is to lay them inside out and on top your favourite fitting pants, mark around them on the new pants. Dont forget to add a seam allowance, saw following the lineand Serge or zig zag the edges
Noooo! Don't kill bell bottoms! :)
you could why would you do that :(((((. Wild leg pants are always in style while skinny pants ....................
Very practical advice! Good job!
The gusset was unique- havent seen that before.
This was a brilliant idea! Thank you so much for sharing it with us, now I can wear a blouse that I made ages ago, but didn’t want to wear it as the sleeves were too tight. It’s not absolutely perfect, but only I will know that. Thanks again and happy Christmas and a happy new year. 💕
Can you do a video on your technical knowledge? Like all of the different types of stitches and when it’s appropriate to use them?
I never really thought that fitted sleeves would make that much of a difference, but they look so good on that jacket!! 😍
Thanks! haha :D
Omg I thrifted my whole wardrobe for my Australia trip too! Great video, tysm 🎉
Your thriftfix/ thriftflips are always the best! 😍
Thank you for showing us how YOU do this. I often have to make the upper arms wider.
Awesome job! So inspiring! Definitely love the idea of thrifted wardrobe for a trip
Thank you for this, last time I asked how to make armholes and sleeves bigger people were only offering suggestions for making them smaller. I have to avoid clothes all the time because the armholes and sleeves are too tight, or I have to buy something several sizes too big just to get enough room in the arms, and then end up with something too baggy around the waist, which looks horrible as I have a relatively small 27 inch waist, wide round the hips and top and relatively big arms, very much an hour glass shape. Whenever I am considering buying any garment, I always look for if the arms are too tight, and if the waist is fitted with enough room elsewhere. I also find some clothes especially trousers annoyingly too long, and like you prefer mid calf length to anything below the ankles that can get caught in escalators and generally in the way. I liked your other video too where you transformed a top that was baggy and styleless around the waist, but I would have needed it more cinched in around the waist as I am older than you and look awful in anything at all baggy round the waist, it looks lovely on you though.
Giiiirl that gusset tip wouldve helped me so much in the past i hated ripping the arms once i started to workout my arms got big snd shirts fit too tight
Thanks for the great vid!
Tipp for beginners for sewing corners like with the gussett (spelling??) On the allowance where the gussett corner meets the corner of the shirt sew one side on and then carefully cut the corner of the fabric of the shirt straight towards your sewing line leaving about 1-2 millimeters. Then you can turn the allowance with the gussett being able to better lay both while sewing.
Yesss, I want to see more thrift fixes!!! What about expand pants in the waist line? What about fix the armpit hole of a jacket that has a lining? Thanks, you fix things simple and to the point!
This was fabulous! DEFINITELY do more of them! I have a blouse that is too tight in exactly the same places. I am going to do the gussets! This video is right on time! Thank you so much!
You are so talented! Where did you learn to sew? Great job. I've been sewing my whole life and have never done a gusset. Can you show how to take in the shoulder and top of sleeve on a simple jacket?
Isn't it impressive how much more attractive the blouse looks after the gusset? Not just comfier. 😀
Excellent, looked on RUclips for weeks to find something like this , thank you😘
Loved that first pant and lioiks way better in this lenght! And smart adjusting of the second one. Lucky the waistband wasnt too thick 👍🏻
Live your instructions for an underarm gusset! I usually have to make these on new clothing. Everything was right on!❤️
Way helpful and practical video! I like quick fixes that are super common like this. Hems, arms. What about, lol, crotch rips?
Omg! I had the same jacket in 5:00 and gave it up a few years ago because I had the same problem and didn't know how to fix it, and thought it might be too much trouble.. if only I had known back then.. 😮 also I love the top you're wearing! 💜
Love this. Plead more thrift quick fixes. Especially on how to adjust clothes to fit better like the gusset tip, I always struggle with fitsbecause I'm so broad shouldered.
Loved seeing you make a gusset. Please show more tips for making clothes bigger or better mobility.
The gusset fix is just what I needed! Thank you!
There are so many pairs of pants I missed out on because of the waist being too big! The pleat idea is so cute and creative
That last fix would be great for replacing arm pits fabric that has been destroyed by sweat and deodorant. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you so much for this video ! The gusset fix worked so good with me ! I gained some weight last year and feels sad that my clothes don't fit me. In future can you do a video on upsizing a blouse?
Omg i kinda self taught myself how to do an underarm gusset. Im glad I had the right idea. Im still learning how to get that execution real clean though. Both items i've done were jackets.
i can't believe how well that gusset looks
gussets are evil!!! i had to do one for a dress for our production of the little mermaid in high school and it took me so long!!! and i just assumed it was bc i was bad at sewing, but looking at this made me realize that nope, gussets just suck to do
I've been there, they are so annoying to make
This video absolutely made my day. I'm glad i found it. I'm going to revive my neglected tops now. Btw more of these videos please. Lots of love
Nice video. You have a great gift that you are sharing with the world. It's very encouraging to others......and I like that style seems to come so easy to you.
I like the last diy. My daughter has a jacket that doesn't quite fit under the arms. Now I jut need to find suitable fabric to make it work.😊
