This is the first song Greg Allman ever wrote and he was only 17 years old. He had the entire song written except for the girls name and it needed to be three syllables. He held onto the song for a while because he couldn’t get it right. One late night he went to the grocery store and an older woman called for her granddaughter, the girls name was Melissa. Greg finished his song lol. True story!
I'm the son of a semi-professional jazz pianist mother, and I grew up during the musical revolution that began with the Beach Boys and the British Invasion capped by the Beatles from the time I was 7 years old, and to this day (I'm 67), Sweet Melissa is one of my favorite and most beautiful songs that praises the love of a woman ever written. To this day it moves my soul.
Greg had one of THE finest voices in Rock music history . His tone , his phrasing .. what an artist . He also had that “ Southern charm “ thing going for him .
I’ve watched almost every reaction channel on RUclips- but you two are the best. You feel the music and interpret it individually- As all music should be listened to. Thanks for allowing me to relive my first experience with so many songs.
A good friend of mine had a girlfriend named Melissa when this song dropped - needless to say he played it all the time. They ended up getting married and having a few kids - so it was a happy ending. Beautiful song and she was a beautiful girl. Hard to believe it's been over 50 years.
Now this is perfect for my Monday at my desk - one of the most beautiful songs the Allmans ever laid down, I just love the vibe on this one. Great choice, I know this'll be another great reaction. Peace and love from Canada☮
You guys alway remind me of the great Walter Payton with the ball. Your smooth, know the spots to hit, always one step ahead of everyone else with videos and commentary. Thanks for all you do.
Many of my favorite growing up memories involve sitting with friends and listening to great music. Sometimes talking about it. Sometimes just smiling as the album moving to the next track. I get similar vibes tuning in and sharing the listening experience with you. Many thanks, gentlemen.
The Allmans always had an incredible rhythm section and great musicians. To me, the magic if this song is there are two voicings, one is Duane’s voice, the other is Dickie’s guitar. They perfectly integrate to create this longing and beautiful song
Laa and Chee! Allman Brothers are some soulful guys brothers! Can’t go wrong with Greg Allman bearing his soul for us. Keep up the good work gentleman!
Great song, great insights This was one of the first songs the band recorded without Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle accident about four months before it was released. The album “Eat A Peach” was dedicated to Duane… RIP 🙏🏻
Props to you guys for not interrupting the song! Such a beautiful song, saw him do that in 1974 at the Orange Bowl in Miami with my father and 3 brothers on a beautiful sunny day! May they all Rest in Peace.
Greg's brother Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971 before this album came out. One side of this album has live version of Donavan's Mountain song recorded at the Fillmore East. It's a long song but worth a listen.
Love the Brothers! By far, my favorite band. I've seen then at least 20 times, they jam like noboby's business, but my favorite part of the show would be their acoustic set. 5 guitars, 3 percussionists, harmonica sometimes.....so good! You guys need to check out Melissa acoustic or my favorite Come On In My Kitchen.....miss the boys. RIP boys
My sister had thier albums. I listenedcto them all overcandvover. Like I did every album. Can sing about or atvleast sing along withany song from those days, even if I hadn't heard in decades. I'm.62 now. So blessed.
One of their best ever! Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident before this song came out. I think this is a song to his brother’s wife and in honor of his brother. Sadly, the bass player Barry Oakley died in another motorcycle accident a year later at almost the same place.
It's hauntingly beautiful ❤ Crossroads, dead man's ghost... I am sure he's feeling his bro & Barry in the words, even tho it was written before both die. RIP Allman Bro band Thankfully their music lives on!🌹
My nephew was marrying a girl with this name. He played guitar and sang. I asked him if he ever sang this song to her. He didn’t know it. He learned it and sang it to her . She loved it, of course.
Me too. I will be 59 a few days before Christmas. We elder Gen Xers were fortunate enough to have seen and experienced so much of the great pop culture of the 70s, and 80s, as we were growing up.
These songs will always remind me of leaving Avalon, Stone Harbor, or some other south Jersey shore town, mid afternoon, after spending the day on the beach and heading towards Philly to go see the Allmans with some cheap lawn seats, and a heavy buzz.
@@julietate7806 Duane DID NOT play on this recording, it was Dickey backing Gregg here. Duane loved the song, and played on an early demo version, but he was killed in Oct 29, 71. This was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami on Dec 9, 71.
Gregory was but 17 years old when he wrote this song. Jackson Browne, 17 when he wrote "These Days." Steven Tyler, 17 when he wrote "Dream On." Classics, all three.
I had the same train of thought about Jackson Brown. Not embarrassed to say that even George Michael entered my mind because he was 17 when he wrote “Careless Whisper.” 🤣🤣🤣
The rhythm section defined what being in the pocket means. Once in a while the bass would follow the vocals. ‘Eat a Peach,’ is one of their best albums.
One of their finest and most beautiful compositions! That breezy strumming acoustic guitar in the intro sets the tone and from there it just takes you away.
Always loved this song, but it took on new meaning when they performed it and dedicated to legendary promoter Bill Graham and his girlfriend who were killed in a plane crash.
"Eat A Peach" is a great Lp. I was 15 when this Lp was released and everytime I hear this track triggers some fond teen memories. There was always like 5 of us and my one friends folks had a busy social calander and were always out. Some of my early reefer smoking memories. Chilling in the basement to what now is classic rock. Shooting pool, sipping on a couple of beers and the music coming out of a pair of JBL L- 65 speakers and a Harmon Kardon 150 watt reciever to chill to. Everything from rock to bluegrass. Bands like The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Earl Scruggs Review, Arlo Guthrie. For young teens we had a pretty diverse taste im music. The main stays were always The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan. A little Beach Boys, The Doors, The Who, Zeppelin and much more. The Beatles, Dylan and the Stones were the Big 3. That's 52 years ago now. WOW! How the years fly by. We did this until 75 and 76 when we all graduated HS. Young people for the most part today haven't a clue of the amount of incredible talent rich musicians and vocalist's there were in the 60's & 70's. Hell, even soft rock like The Carpenters were great. I would like to see you two react to 3 Beatles singles because they are very important ones. Starting with "Rubber Soul" which was released on 12/3/65 and on that same day they dropped a double A-side single "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out". These are both great tracks and were big hits. In Oct. last year the remixes of the double Lp's 1962-66 and 1967 were released and sound great. These two can be found on 62-66. Next " Paperback Writer"/"Rain" released on June 10, 1966. These can be found on the bonus disc on the "Revolver" remix released in 2022. They sound incredible. "Rain" was Johns first recorded track after he and George started taking acid. This is a killer track and is still regarded as the greatest B-side in history and includes what many consider (including Ringo) to be Ringo's greatest drumming on a Beatles track. This one is a must listen! The last one is their double A-side single "Strawberry Fields Forever"/" Penny Lane" released 2/17/67 and is still regarded as the greatest single in history. These 2 can be found on the 1967-1970 remix. "Strawberry Fields" will blow you two away, sounds incredible as does "Penny Lane" These two were the first tracks recorded for what would become "Pepper". Pepper wasn't a concept yet. All they knew was these were the first two tracks recorded for their next Lp. They went out as a single 3 months before the release of "Pepper" due to corporate greed. Their manager Brian Epstein was being pressured by EMI brass for a single because The Beatles hadn't released a single in 6 or 7 months. Epstein and the EMI brass began began George Martin for a single and eventually he relented and released these two songs as a single. He always stated until his death that the only regret he ever had recording The Beatles was caving to EMI pressure and releasing these two as a single. They belong on Pepper. I would tend to agree with your views of Pepper but please listen to this single and imagine these two tracks on Pepper. We might be saying Pepper is the greatest Lp ever. I didn't even touch on Paul's "Penny Lane" great track that went to #1 in the UK and the US. I really hope too see you guys react to these 3 singles. "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" are my two favorite Beatles Lp's but after that, #3 is tough to pick. You 2 are my favorite reactors, I always enjoy your content. You guys really listen to the music. Peace ❤❤
Aloha gentleman, this is my favorite mellow song by these guys. Gregg said he had a song but it wasn't done. In a store he saw a young girl running and her mother called out Melissa
Long time Brothers fan, and an even longer suffering Jet fan.. you guys are the best!! Btw - catching TTB 3x this week in NYC , great way to kick it off
The backstory behind the lyrics is something you want to look up. Just incredible. Thanks for the reaction. I know when La likes a song or certain parts, because he shakes his head back and forth instead of nodding up and down. It was a little subtle on this tune, but he's been more animated on others. Watch for his 'tell' next time they review a song and see what you think. Love the channel... keep it up.
Thanks for this one. One of the most amazing people I've known was named Melissa by her biker Daddy. She left us way too early, but is now out of pain. I don't think I'll ever not cry when hearing this great tune. RIP Melissa, you wild and wonderful thing you. 😿

I actually met a nurse named Melissa Allman! And she was beautiful too!

Dickey Betts guitar always caught me by surprise even though I was always anticipating it. A virtuoso.
Their instrumental, Jessica, is a classic that is worth a listen.

Gregg Allman, what a voice, so soulful.
One of the most beautiful tunes of all time.
Greg Allman. Arguably, the greatest Caucasian blues singer in my lifetime.
Totally agree him and Johnny Winter
Don't forget that othe'blue-eyed soul' keyboard player, Brent Mydland!
