+Adam Eccleston I am so grateful that you are moved by what this song means, and who it's writer is. I am finding that it is not often that someone does. As a man who is a very large mix of ethnicities (Hawaiian, Tongan, Chinese, and Caucasian - Always mistaken for Latino or Middle Eastern), it is very hard for me to know where to truly place myself. Born and raised in California, I was never genuinely taught a decent amount about the Hawaiian culture and identity I was made to identify with. It has been somewhat of a difficulty in the back of my head for most of my young life. It was so confusing at times to be subject to pseudo-Hawaiian stereotypes at such a young age - people telling how I ought to be. I can clearly remember large white men asking me all about luaus and being confused about how a little Hawaiian boy didn't like the taste of pineapple. At the age of 20, I've now had enough of the lacuna. Iv'e begun my research, and my heart breaks more and more the more I study. Just like the Native Americans, the Native Hawaiian population was devastated by disease. I was almost in denial when I discovered that there was once a sovereign Hawaiian government that was overthrown due to the business interests of foreigners. I myself had been duped by being raised to think of Hawaii as most Americans do - that one place far away with the nice weather and flowers and beaches and coconuts with the happy people with swaying hips and endless compassion and love. The reality of the situation is much more than that. I am now continuing to research into my Hawaiian roots (as well as planning on knowing my Tongan). As tragic and as sad as the story of Hawaii is, I believe that a line from the poet Wordsworth can summarize a very small but hopeful and true Hawaii - "We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind". I am not full Hawaiian. There are rarely any who are more than 25% now-a-days. But in some way - in a very real way - Native Hawaii is still very alive; carried on in the mixed cultures that now inhabit the islands and the mostly the west coast of mainland USA. We may not be as "pure blooded" or preserved as our brothers and sisters across the rest of our Pacific, but we are still here. We are still here, and there is still pain beneath the pride we find in attempting to discover and revitalize a culture and people that were on the brink of eradication. All things considered, the survival of the indigenous people of Hawaii (in all our mixed ways) is somewhat of a miracle. There has been so much breaking, and remnants are ready for healing. Bless you :)
@@claudia-7917 yet acknowledging the farewell adress of a deposed queen to her people somehow makes a person a snowflake? Alright. It's an incredibly important song to a lot of the older people of Hawai'i. Show some respect.
Claudiadude - they wouldn’t have even been able to produce this song if it weren’t for the overthrowing of the queen lilikuokalani. The us government overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy because they wanted to extort Hawaii, they saw money opportunities and imprisoned her in her own palace and stole so much from the people of Hawaii ILLEGALLY. People of Hawaii had powerful minds they memorized thousands of chants they spoke in song, Disney (owned by a haole) made millions off Lilo and Stitch and so do other companies based off of our songs, and our culture they extort for their own welfare. @@claudia-7917 The song wouldn't even exist if USA never removed the queen and rescued Hawaii. Everyone can only cry about the song being written by the queen and nobody giving credit to her. They just don't realize that the song only came into existence because of USA (removing the queen). What people also don't realize is that Disney made Lilo & Stitch and exposed Hawaii, the people and their culture to the world. Yet Disney doesn't get a thank you by everyone for making people aware of this song.
As a hawaiian myself I think it's important that this song should be credited to my queen. Also the fact that some white supremist said that they "saved" us is in denial lol. Yeah thanks for making countless Hawaiians homeless, kicking us out of our lands, attempted to kill my culture and language, brought diseases over here, raise the cost of living here, distroyed countless habitats, killed off beautiful animals such as the o'o bird, dragged us into war, made many broken promises to the hawaiian people (one was kept though), and there's a lot more that you guys fucked us over with but those are the main points. So yeah, thanks for fucking us over and putting all of us into poverty and hell! We *clearly* wanted that huh?
The song is literally about the forced annexation of Hawaii by the US government. So, this song is essentially a very depressing reminder that Lilo is about to be taken by social services/a government worker, a thing that is extremely common among Native/First people communities. Like how Hawaii was taken from Queen Liliuokalani.
