Home depot vs. Costco 27 gallon storage containers

  • I'm in the process of renovating and reorganizing my garage, and wanted to do a quick comparison of these home depot containers vs. similar containers from costco.
Good: Either of the containers should work fine for general storage. And the price of both (around $9 per container) is pretty affordable.
Bad: Of course the two containers are slightly different dimensions so they don't stack nicely. Specifically the Costco containers are slightly longer and wider so they won't fit on top of the Home Depot containers.
Ugly: Home Depot seems to be manufacturing these as cheaply as possible which is noticeable by the thinner/flimsier top, and the plastic pull-off defect on the underside of the lids. I noticed this defect on other Home Depot containers as well, so this wasn't just a one time mistake.

Man these prices have changed. They're now $9.99 at my Costco and $15.98 for the HDX at Home Depot. That made my decision for me, let alone the quality difference. I needed over 20 so I saved over $100.

They’re $9.99 for me at HDX rn. I think they’re on sale or “on sale”. The red lids are the same price

An interesting point - look at the walls of each container. You can see the Home Depot container's walls have "steps" that go all the way to the bottom, whereas Costco's container only have partial steps. These steps serve to strengthen to the walls of the containers as opposed to the walls being completely flat. Assuming that each container is comprised of the same thickness and strength material, I'd say the Home Depot container would be stronger at least in this regard.

The Costco are actually a little more durable. I have both and prefer the Costco for that extra width. Plus the Costco totes doesn’t have that burnt rubber smell. I always wash the Home Depot totes and leave them out to dry and air out for about 5 days. After that the bad smell is gone

Thank you! I went to buy more of the Costco brand bins and they were out. I was coming to this video to see if they were able to be stacked interchangeably so thanks for answering that question.

I bought 30 of the Home Depot totes for moving and have been using them for storage for ten years now. They get used and abused all the time, not just filled and left for years in the attic. These are the best totes I have ever owned, by far. We have a couple of the Costco totes that my wife thought were the same thing. They have not stood up at all and have been relegated to Christmas decorations duty because they don't hold much weight and can't take moving them around more than twice a year.

Ok. This makes me feel better. I don’t have a Costco membership. But the HD bins have been on sale for $10 sometimes. And that’s what I’ve been buying.

Yes, absolutely HD ones hold up better. They can stack 5 high with considerable weight in each. They can also store things outside without leaking, unlike others.

Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (😬) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.

I found out that you can not stack a Costco, Lowes or any standard square-bottomed tote on a Home Depot tote because the HDX lid depression has rounded corners.

I've been over-researching these. The dimensions are different enough in general to make them incompatible if you are planning storage down to the inch. HDX have a smaller footprint, and are taller.

I got a small Home Depot version as a hydroponic reservoir and was very disappointed in the quality of the top but worst was the leak at the bottom. You see many people using these for hydroponic but don't even try with the Home Depot versions. Looks like the molds have spots on the bottom that are not smooth and likely to leak.

At my work we use dozens and dozens of HDX 27 and 55 gallon totes pluse a few smaller ones here and there. In a bind we tried other bands from other stores like Wal-Mart, Lowes, Ace, Tractor Supply Store, and Atwoods. None of the other brands have ever held up holding heavy media, hardware, water, stacking, sliding, dropping, and general rough handling.
I'm curious how the Costco totes handle side bulging, cracking, splitting, and chipping and trying to hold too much weight.

Weigh them on a sensitive scale! You'll find the Home Despot [sic] bins are much lighter than the Greenmode bins offered by COSTCO and others!

When you think about it the 50 cents price savings adds back up when you have to pay for a Costco membership compared to Home Depot which costs nothing to shop. Just a thought.

    • @nnotof3218
      @nnotof3218 2 года назад +6

That would make sense if you're paying for the membership just to purchase these. If you have a Costco membership, you most likely buy other things from them.

After using both for a while I prefer the Costco for a couple reasons. 1st the Home Depot totes have a burnt rubber smell and the totes from Costco don’t. I always wash the totes from Home Depot and let them sit outside to air out. After about a week the smell goes away. 2nd I prefer the extra width and length of Costco. I can get more things in there with the extra room. 3rd the lids stay on the Costco totes better. If you have arthritis this could be a negative though. They both do the job fine though

Costco's always a better choice you don't have to deal with the idiots at Home Depot . I like that at Home Depot they have signs saying have a question ask one of our professionals . If they were professionals they wouldn't be working at Home Depot . What kind of plumber or electrician would walk away from $100,000 plus a year job to work for crap wages in a dead end job ? A very bad one someone you wouldn't wanna take advice from . Home Depot has become the Walmart of hardware stores , poor quality cheaply made merchandise but without the low price.
