I have been playing this piece for more than half a century. One thing that I seem to have understood is that in the blues you don't have to perform the score as it is written, but it must be interpreted. Here there is a good interpretation in which it seems that the two hands go on their own. I studied it with what I believe to be the original blues spirit in which the right hand does not have to play the notes all the same as they appear on the score, but must be pressed, prolonging the first note as if it had a dot that increases its value by half of what was written. The result is an interpretation that resembles that slow progression of Summertime.

Yes you are correct! It’s called a “swing” rhythm in jazz music. I have my own philosophy about that - it seems to me that it should be somewhere in between the two straight 8th note rhythm and the dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm. You get the “swing” from emphasizing the first note rather than a very “long” first note. Yes it’s longer, but only by a little. So you want to give the impression of long+short, but in actual playing, the first note is only a tiny bit longer than the second note but with more emphasis, and “ghosting” the second note, as in not giving it much emphasis.

I’m in the middle of learning this tune. Any tips on how to practice this or just on playing this piece in general?

Oh great! This is such a nice piece - hope you enjoy learning it. 👍 The only thing I thought was making the middle section sounds like a song out of an old radio station… if that makes sense! Enjoy! 😊

@@YalinChiPianoYes, and I see you are not pedaling this section, is this preferred or how it should be

It does have a little pedal :) it would be very hard to not pedal at all.

@@YalinChiPiano The famous one in A Minor, I would imagine. Though I think it's just a superficial resemblance of the opening chords.

C'est bien chanté :) comme disait ce cher Horowitz, il ne faut pas jouer d'un instrument, il faut chanter, et tu le fais plutôt bien...
