- NFL 2K1 deserves more attention for taking a great game and making it even better. 2K’s first franchise mode couldn’t have been any better for the time, and despite 2K1 not being as technically impressive as Madden 2001 on the PS2, it held its own in numerous other important areas.

When 2k came out on the dreamcast I loved it more than madden. The 2k series is still the pinnacle of simulation football.

Same for me I liked it better than Madden 2000 and I liked NBA 2K over Live 2000. I got Dreamcast day 1 and tried NFL2K out at Toys R Us and definitely had to have it.

My dad bought me a Dreamcast after they discontinued it in 2001. The system came with this, NBA and MLB 2k1. I was football obsessed at that point already, so I played this game to death.

I played 2k1-5 and loved all of them. 2K3 was probably played the most. I took a break from 2K4 because it came out like a month after the football season, which was dumb as hell and the Vick cover from Madden was too godly not to own. Then 2K5 came out way too early and I didn’t have online so I wanted the game that would give me the most recent roster. Knowing what I know now, I wish 2K4 and 2K5 were played instead of Madden but all well. Madden 04 and 05 were still great. At the end of the day, I’ll always be a 2K guy.
It just seems odd to me that indie games can't even replicate gameplay from 2000. At the rate we are going, football heaven might actually be in heaven. 😢

EA refused to release their sports games on the DC unless they were the exclusive sports games. These games were already in development, which is why Sega refused.
Another thing I’ve heard is that EA also rejected Dreamcast development due to Sega using NEC’s PowerVR2 chipset over 3Dfx Voodoo2

I had NBA 2K and NFL 2k when it first came out and it was next level to me. I loved every single second lol the Dreamcast had AMAZING games

I bought a Dreamcast bundle in 2018 and one of the games was NFL 2K1. I was surprised by how much fun it was to play. I played it often for a while
2k1 and 2k2 were my jams back in middle school but maturing is realizing that 2k was actually the best game
This was an incredible game when it came out. Online gaming worked so well too even on modem! The boomers had the Beatles, we had NFL2K!
In the moment this game was so good. I miss that era of competition. It was so fun to see what each company came up with each year
I appreciate that softdrink brought light to this game. I still play it on redream. NFL 2k1 on All star mode is Incredibly hard.

I had this for the Dreamcast and it was still fun! The intro still gets me hyped to this day!
I've never seen gameplay of this game, but I swear my jaw dropped at that one handed TE catch and some of those hard hits. This game is old, but seems to have aged pretty well! Those tackle and break tackle animations/physics are freaking awesome, even in 2024.
Hopefully we can get a new NFL 2k someday

Nice retrospective man. The NFL 2K series on Dreamcast is one of the few games in my life that changed how l looked at game. 4-5 year me was so glued to tv when my cousin played it on his new Dreamcast.

When I set up my emulators and started testing Flycast, I booted this game to test it and I had so much fun, I didn't realize that I spent 2 hours playing it. While it's dated, its presentation still holds up well and the "on-the-field" gameplay is still enjoyable..
That intro though!
It was a quality series and what the analysts said was the best up until that time! One line I remember had my friend cracking up: they sat on the ball like they were waiting for it to hatch[when getting a delay penalty]...

I didn't play Madden after NFL GameDay came out on the PS1 until Madden 2003. I didn't play Madden again until 15.

I remember when I was probably 4 or 5 years old my uncle had a dreamcast and had this game and he would let me play it and i loved it so much!!! might've also been because im from St Louis and this game is the game coming off of the rams superbowl win. I wish i could revist this game!! Hopefully soon!!

I love it so much I started in 2k and have 2k1 and 2k2 on Dreamcast and the rest on ps2 and xbox
One game I'd love a review for is nba showtime on nbc on the dreamcast it's pretty much a spiritual successor to jam it came out in 99 an it really nails the nba at the time very fun game

2k in 98... Face scans, 3000 real life animations and celebrations... Field talk... Crowd reactions... Realistic player models....Took madden to the 360, ps3 days to get fucking face scans.... Madden never did anything the best... It only got its place cause madden was a celebrity on tv every week... Every year... From its inception there was always something better... If madden wasnt the face it would have been dead as tecmo bowl

Still the highest rated football game on Metacritic. EA could only dream. 2K1 was better than Madden then and it's still better than Madden now.
I left EA when the Dreamcast launched and been a 2K fanboy ever since. The last Madden game I bought was the first one on the 360. I ended up taking it back the next day because it was so trash. I think 2K made a mistake making APF2K8. IMO they should've went back to Madden's roots and made the teams the generic NFL city teams. I'm still holding out hope for Maximum Football
the intro video for the game alone captures how awesome early 2000s aesthetics were, presentstion nowadays is too mundane and plain.
A antique store near is selling a CD with 2k2 on the Dreamcast burned onto it for $5 so I'll probably get that at some point. I imagine it would have the same features as 2K1 but upgraded.

Another solid video, dog. I love the fact that you called out Madden by stating facts. Specifically, stating that 2k1's franchise depth, and the epic updates/additions in the 2k series as it progressed verses Madden only updating the graphics and roster. What a shame we live in such a busted day and age. I haven't purchased Madden since 2007, and I'll never buy another Madden. Madden is trash!

Greatest NFL game of all-time.
Just set the game speed to "Slow" in the Options menu (it's just a bit too fast for me at default settings) to make it more along NFL 2K's game speed.
I even put it above NFL 2K5 and 2K3 (I absolutely ADORE 2K3), probably simply because I am a Sega fanboy, and 2K1 was the last Sega exclusive before they went multiplat with 2K2.
I was (still am) a huge GameDay guy as well with GameDay "96" through GameDay 2000.

NFL uniforms before the Reebok deal in 2002 was weird bc different teams had different companies making their jerseys. Like Puma use to make Saints Jerseys, Eagles had Reebok and Russell athletics.

I had to break the habit of mashing the A button to try to get to the next play and hitting A to hurry up the qb now I have to set through the animation even if there 4 seconds left on the clock SO ANNOYING
I love playing this game with no penalties and I have the defense literally on the offense side and sack the QB as soon as the snap lol fun times
Long story short. 2k needs to make another football game
