How To Sharpen Log Splitter Wedge W/Head to Head Comparison!

- We will show how the stock 6 way wedge vs sharpened 6 way wedge works splitting beech with the Eastonmade 12-22. Unexpected results that I didn't even consider but can definitely add up! We split 10 rounds of green beech and time how long it takes and how many times the autocycle kicks back without completing the stroke. We then use the Milwaukee M18 grinder and a sharpening wheel to put an edge on the 6 way and run 10 similar rounds through the splitter so we can compare! Along with improved splitting, reduced wear and tear on the machine, and lower fuel consumption we found an additional benefit!
Here are links to what we used to sharpen the wedge:
Gater finishing wheel used for sharpening: amzn.to/3NkpuqS
Milwaukee grinder: amzn.to/3Cjrl8W
Well that was satisfying to watch! Loved the sound of wood being split!
Thank you! I love that sound as well.
Really simple and relevant vid, wastage comparison, load on machine, time taken, excellent
Thank you for the feedback!
I've never given much thought to sharpening the wedge on my splitter until now!. Great video!.
Thanks Steve, it definitely makes a difference! I thought it would be marginal but I was impressed with how much it improved the splitting over a short sample.
hi there fun show , i have always kept my wedge sharp enough to shave a mullet . good show john
Thanks John, mullet shaving is definitely sharp!
That was a well thought out comparison video with obvious results. Great job Heath and Rachel!!
Thanks Obie it definitely made a worthwhile difference.
That was a good comparison. You proved sharpening your wedge is well worth the effort. Take care
Thanks, it definitely made a difference!
Great video having it side by side we sharpened ole buster when we made it more because we figured it would be easier to re attach a finger if it was a clean cut
Lol, true you want a clean cut. If you made it through the 7 minute 1/3rd of a cord with all your fingers I’d say you have it figured out.
Hi guys, a quick squirt of spray vegetable oil on the wedge once in awhile also helps speed things up. I keep a can beside my splitter.
Thanks Dale, I actually grabbed a can of the mower deck lube (to keep grass from sticking) to see if that helps.
Very interesting comparison.
Thanks Roger!
I watch you from the other side of the globe, Russia
That is awesome! Thank you.
This was really cool video idea. What really impressed me was the cycle time was so quick you just kept pace with it. I rarely use a splitter, I swing a maul. I’m more efficient with a maul than a box store splitter. But when ever I do get a splitter it will be one of those eastonmade units, that is incredible.
Thank you, and yes these units can really crank out the firewood and save your back with the log lifts!
one of the best videos and valuable info; I'm going to sharpen my box wedge on my 12-22 now that you've shown the benefit
Thank you, I highly recommend it to everyone.
Very good video and OUTSTANDING team work Cheers 😇😇👍👍👌👌🍻🍻
Thank you and cheers!
hola,la practica hace al experto.saludos de argentina.
Thank you Anibal! Thanks for watching.
I will be sharpening my wedge on the Countyline . Great video as usual !!! 🪵🇺🇸👍🏻
Thanks Del!
Wow quite a difference! Thanks for sharing👍💪👍
You’re welcome, thanks for watching and commenting!
Impressive, I'm going to be sharping my wedge.
Thanks Robert, it definitely makes a difference.
I said it before and I say it again this channel should be name hard working woman. Very awesome as always. Thanks for the stickers. Have a great day be safe.
Thanks Bucky, the intermittent problem came back. Trying a new speed sensor next 🤞🏻 that it fixes it. I miss my tractor!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors I know the feeling. I miss my Kubota L2501 4x4 but someone else wanted it more then me. Got a bobcat 763 now.
One more tip ! For knarly heating wood full of knots I have used a pump up garden sprayer with used motor oil cut with diesel fuel to spray the wedge down. Reduces friction quite a bit. If the wood is going to a cooker then use used cooking oil as a lube on the wedge.
Thanks, we have waxed the wedges and that helps too.
Go Heath , always teaching up a better and more efficient way!
Thanks Eddie!
Sharpening the wedges is a must, especially with the box wedge. Great video!! Good Luck going for that record of 3:24 from Andrew. He did have a couple of slipups, but maybe only cost him 5-8 seconds. Have fun and stay safe.
Thanks Matt, we are going to try. We will see what we can do. Overtime at work and rain have delayed our attempt so far.
Hi Heath - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I've used an 8hp Italian vertical electric splitter for over 15 years, producing up to 180 cords some years, now down to say 30. For me it has always been a no brainer to keep my single wedge as sharp as hell to reduce pressure on all the machine components. I don't fear the sharp wedge on my machine - I consider the real danger for me is my fingers getting pinched either between logs or especially against the splitter table, hence the reason for me preferring to use log tongs to distance my fingers from these risks.
Definitely saves wear and tear! It was fun to see the side by side difference it makes.
I knew the sharp wedge would do better I sharpened mine the first time I used it have a great weekend guys
Thanks David, I suspected it would do better too, just wanted to see how much better. It definitely cut smoother and created less debris.
Heath, excellent example. I noticed you certainly had an edge on Old Blue. By the way, I think your splitter challenge was a massive PR success for you and all the channels involved. Great idea (and I discovered new channels to watch).
Rachael, your hair already is on fire IMO 👍🏻
Thanks Mark, it has been fun for sure. Glad so many channels are having fun with it and more channel’s being discovered.
Love it! Great video!!
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you!
Nice! I guess I ought to get the grinder out…
I thought it would help, didn’t realize it would split that much cleaner.
Good job guys 👍👍
Thank you!
I believe that Andrew nade a comment in one of his videos that they blunt the edges for safety reasons. What people do with the units after purchase is up to them, thus removing the Liability issues from Eastonmade.
I believe I remember hearing that as well.
What a difference. Thanks for the video. Looking forward to see what the time will be. Cheers 🍻
Thanks! We were going to run it today but I got called in for overtime. Hopefully tomorrow!
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors we going to do the ultra tomorrow and air it Wednesday
Looking forward to it.
Nice job on the video you guys. I guess I better get the grinder out. 👍🏻
Thanks Dean, it definitely helps!
Careful...@EastonmadeWoodSplitters might come out with a one-off build of a 24D-SE just for the competition...
The 24 D pro, that would be one hell of a machine 😁👍
Hopefully they send it our way so we can be all time champions lol.
It’s tough to win a competition when one of the top splitter companies owner takes you on lol.
nice machine and 1 pretty helper, sir.
Thanks Larry, I agree on all counts!
Thanks for the Awesome Tip...
You’re welcome, appreciate the feedback.
Looks like a lot of fun .
Thanks, we definitely have fun out there together.
Andrew Easton said it is ok to sharpen wedges. They are not sharp from the factory for safety concerns. I definitely would recommend sharpening.
Sharpening them definitely helps!
I'm new to this channel. I notice the kickback most often happens when wood piles up in front after splitting. When it falls off & empties the plate, there was no kick back. Maybe taking off the paint will help like shining a bull dozer blade or a turning plough. Yep, a sharper edge works better. Fingers can't take it whether dull or sharp, Ouch!
Welcome to the channel. Thanks for commenting. One of the biggest differences I noticed was the reduced slash or debris.
Heath well made comparison video that all should watch. Sure sharp wedges are not for all but I'm a believer in them myself. Great video folks 👍
Thanks Bob, it definitely helped on this beech!
@Hard Working Man seems most I cut is beech. My woodlot is in the lower Adirondacks. All the wood I can cut from broke off blown down. They are dying off
Bob, I have heard a lot of beech are dying. Ours seem to be okay so far.
I've noticed that most of the wedges all get sharpened on one side, therefore pushing the block of wood to one side. When going through a multi- edge head, the block cannot move off to one side because all the wedges are holding it creating compaction. If you were to sharpen on both sides you would reduce this compaction by 50% sliding through with more ease and more speed
Thanks Pete, I know my All Wood wedge is sharpened on both sides. I plan on touching that one up later today.
I was thinking I burned a bunch of beech one time,I thought it burned pretty hot , anyway a another great video 👍
Thanks, it is a great burning wood.
Great video. Awesome content. I'm shocked that you don't have more than 8500 subscribers on RUclips with your beautiful wife. You have great advice with awesome machines.
Thanks Brian, we’ve been steadily growing. Our goal is to keep improving and getting better. Im sure the subscribers will come with time.
Great vid HWW&M, can’t wait to see take down the Hulk & Mucho Man
Thanks Marc, we are going to give it our best!
Nice job on the comparison ! I enjoy watching the content you come up with .
Thank you Dave. We try to have fun and be educational. I like trying new things and seeing how they work or don’t work.
what a gorgeous helper
Thanks Cody!
The bar remounted on top of tote could be welded horizontally to top of tote or bolt same
way so that you can store a second tote on top
That would probably work too!
Hey guys, nice job on the wedge I would say it made a huge difference! Beach is a good wood to show it on also, it's a tough one to split especially how knotty it was. Thanks for the shout out, this challenge is fun and it's a cool way to bring all the channels together! Talk to you later-Tony
Thanks Tony, it definitely made a difference on the beech especially the knotty pieces. Definitely happy with the way the challenge is turning out for everyone. We created a playlist and added everyone’s videos so people will have an easier time finding them all.
My axis came in Friday and I'm loving it but but I was shocked how blunt the blade is. Not even rounded or anything, it's just flat on the bottom.
I bet if you put a bit of an edge on it it’ll work even better. No need to make it shaving sharp but not blunt should help. Enjoy the Axis, they are a sweet splitter!
I too keep the single wedge on splitter as close to razor sharp as possible. It helps thru stringy wood. And straight grain just pops open.
Thanks Tom, it definitely helps!
Good to see this!
Thank you, it definitely made a difference, more than I expected.
Great idea for a video Heath and RR! I’m definitely doing the challenge sometime this week… hope I’m not too late to the show. By the way, I’ll probably sharpen my wedge first haha!
Thanks Dick, looking forward to your video!
Great comparison! But use your legs more for lifting. This is coming from someone who processed firewood for a woodstove to heat the house 24/7 for 36 years! At 72 the back still works - playsing golf three times a week in retirement!! 😀
Thanks John, I am getting better about it but still room for improvement. I hope I’m still active at 72!
Thank you
You’re welcome thanks for watching.
to protect that edge and for safety: wd40 and cover those with hose pieces cut to fit.
May have to do this for storage! Thanks for watching.
Be interesting to see how the all wood does sharpened too
Jon, I am going to touch it up and re run our challenge. I made a few other adjustments and additions to it that should help as well.
Good look out!!
Thanks Tom!
Great fun. I was allway told that a dull splitting maul, splits better than a sharp splitting maul. But hydraulic wood splitters are different beast. Could you do a test on that. ?💪🏻 Dull splitting maul compared to sharp one ?
Great videos. I enjoy them.
May be worth trying one day. Thanks for the feedback.
The only problems with a sharp wedge is edge deformation easier when hitting stuff and you will cut yourself when you bump into it. But it does slice thru knotty wood better. Hoping to meet you at the Paul Bunyan show in October.
Definitely have to be careful and yes they will damage a bit easier, probably need to be touched up a little more frequently too. I’d say it saves a decent amount of wear and tear on the machine though. I’m sure we’ll meet, we had a lot of fun last year!
Andrew had mentioned that the wedges are made from hardened AR plate, this aides in deformation.
Hello HWM & HWW, a sharp wedge or a dull wedge no safer either way as far a where your hand is, less kickbacks or pieces that spin out and off the splitter is a safety thing, but in my experience that is either speed or nasty knots, soft wood or stringy wood I agree sharp is good, a more blunt edge on a wedge is not bad for nice straight grain hard woods, as it tends to need a bit more force but pops the wood open, many times you do not need to run the entire stroke of the ram to split, Good Vid, shows that knowing what you are up against with different types of wood, if you split some GUM or ELM, that sharp wedge will shine even brighter.
Thanks Ben, very good points!
I'm splitting fresh elm right now using a 27-ton splitter and it is a bear, especially if there are knots or splits. I did sharpen the wedge and saw little benefit, although I did it with a hand file and it certainly is not as sharp as Heath got his. I may need to invest in a grinding wheel.
Dan, that flap wheel did a great job.
Worked much better sharp. And now the competition is getting nervous 😅. Looks like hard working man and hard working women is coming for yas.
We sure are going to try!
I think sharpening was the right thing to do for sure. Is it me or does beech just not split up very well? Just my two cents lol. Y’all keep up the great work!!!
Thanks Bruce, I have heard that Beech can vary from east splitting to difficult splitting.
Looks like it made a big difference to me
Yes it did Randall, I will definitely be sharpening all of my wedges.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors good idea I never thought of that
Looks like sharpening made a big difference.
Thanks Shawn, it definitely did.
What is the difference between what you call premium firewood and the wood you burn in the winter?
The premium wood that we sell is the clean split, nice looking wood. The wood we burn is the ugly knotty splits, splits with some rot or punky spots in it.
Should take the wedge to milling shop get mill to right angle . Good luck beat a 24D Heath .
Thanks Leonard we are going to give it our best shot.
The faster time results of - so ks my feeling - the less kickbacks and not oft the splitter pushing ist faster through the wedge.
Maybe the wedge will hold longer when unsharpend?
Yes the faster time has a lot to do with the fewer kick backs since we would hold the levers on once it kicked back which kept the times closer. The sharper wedge will probably need a little touch up now and then but I’d say it saves quite a bit of wear and tear on the splitter.
Good video, useful information, very nice.... hard working woman racheal
Thanks Barry! Rachel definitely is that!
Great comparison guys. Its on like donkey kong!!!! Lol
Thanks Andrew, we’re ready to rumble!
I don’t know why Andrew isn’t sharpening his wedges. I know he says they are too dangerous to his employees once sharpened but I think they could simply cover the sharpened edge and leave the covers on until final delivery. Simple enough to put a strip of pipe insulation over the sharpened edge then wrap that with packing tape.
A guy gets his Trans Am / Camaro mullet cut off and he starts working again! 😂
I’ll grow something back next fall! Then back behind the scenes I go lol.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors 🤣
I keep threatening my kids that I’ll grow one like I had back in the day. 🤪
Rock it out!
how much wear and tear are being done to the sharpening wedge??
Tom, it’s not adding much wear and tear to the wedge. I think the easier it splits the rounds it saves wear and tear on the machine.
You've only hit the first part, you need to back over with a good bastard file. To put a keen edge on it. Myself, thinks the paint is only there for shipping. But I've been wrong before.
Howard, I may go back and do just this. Thanks for the feedback.
We kinda goofed up on that challenge didn't get all the wood in the video will get it next time thats what happens when your new to videoing lol
No worries, it happens to all of us.
I guess it did help, but we all knew it would
Yes, I knew it would help but to be honest I didn’t think it would reduce the waste that much.
What is the engine power of this log splitter?
This splitter has a 13hp Honda engine.
6-26-23 Illinois One question: If you have been using this wedge......why the paint not worn off the bevel ???
My 6 way and 4 way wedges are newer. The 6 way I got with this splitter was damaged from the previous user so this is a replacement.
Good video once again buddy, thats very nice timber you have and your lady is looking really great too, don't suppose you have considered sharing since?
Lol, nope. But thank you.
Not Really serious about that but still, if you change your mind
Nope!
that splitter is a factory. beats mine, but it's a single wedge 20 ton. Do you ever stage the logs ahead to be split and move the trailer for the pile?
They definitely pump out the wood. Yes, we split in a lot of different ways. I am in the process of setting up more of a firewood processing center to streamline our operation but have not finished it yet.
Can you get the guy and the machine out of the way?
Isn’t that the same thing? Rachel calls me the machine lol. Oh you mean the log splitter lol.
I would put a there’d of a cord video but no one has 1hr to watch it lol
Lol, Jay there have been a few that took a while. It’s all in good fun!
👌🏋️♀️🏁
Thanks Oliver!
Love it.....I actually ran across Andrews video first.....great job, and I enjoy the competition🪓🪵
Thanks Don, it’s been fun for sure. We have a few ideas to attempt to retake the title from Andrew!
lol...good luck, we'll be looking forward to the rise to the challenge 😁
I have to say it your wife is beautiful your a very lucky guy I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I had to mention it
Appreciate it. I tell her that all the time. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Cmon Heath…..quit making Rachel do all the hard work!! 😂
Lol, Rachel does what she wants!
Hi beautiful lady you don't need to get hurt you are doing a good job I love you...
Thank you Jeff!
You run any of that through the All Wood?
Not yet but we will.
Así da gusto rajar leña un saludo pareja
Thank you Alfonso!
A sharp wedge should help with reducing the slivers and trash.
Yes it does! It was slicing through the knots too instead of pushing them out.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors we see the same results with our box wedge. Sharp makes less trash. (But still a huge mess)
Yeah I imagine it’s a more pronounced difference on the box wedge but for sure they always produce debris.
Just a small and simple advice. If you use such a grinder to sharpen an axe you will of course destroy the axe because of the heat the grinder develops. I'm sorry to tell this.
They’ve been working fine, I don’t think I generated enough heat to ruin it.
😜
How bout a face cord with an axe competition.
There may be too much heavy breathing into the mic if we tried that.
You didn't show us the new hair after get the mullet cut off
Chris, I’ll get a hatless shot in the next video! I went and got it cleaned up a little so I don’t get picked on by Rachel anymore.
Tarp
Without wasting a bunch of time & energy, all you have to do is get yourself a "sharp chisel, and a dull chisel". Which one cuts better and easier?🤔
PS: They also say a little ear wax makes it slide better too🤣
But then I wouldn’t have a sharpened wedge. Waxing will come soon. Thanks for watching.
@@hardworkingmanoutdoors The "time & energy" was in reference to the video.
You're welcome
👍
Only in America 🤪
Living the dream. Getting work done.
They know what they are doing with that clickbait thumb nail....😂
Thanks for clicking!
That beach is good looking wood , do you folks have a good amount of it in your area . ?
Michael, we have a decent amount of it. It’s a heavy dense wood for sure! This tree split nicely too.
if the hydraulics (hoses etc) can handle it. maybe your thinking is you can work faster b/c it's sharper. just a thought. not being a Meany.
It should reduce the cycle time a little bit on tougher splitting rounds. I think the biggest benefit is the reduced debris from the cleaner splitting.
They look brand new why would you want to sharpen them
They come from the manufacturer with a dull edge for safety.
nothing new here
Thanks for watching.
Audio sounds like you're recording via a tin can.
Not sure why, we used the same mics etc that we always use.
I don’t know about sharpen your wedge like a knife. Remember it a wood splitter not a pizza cutter. Rachel watch you don’t cut your beautiful hair now plus watch the sparks don’t burn your cute t- shirt . Heath got his hair fix up for the lady on u tube 😊. Remember boys and girls THINK SAFETY around sharpen wood splitter wedge always put SAFETY FIRST carry on boys and girls . 8:13 😢
Thanks Leonard, I’m trying to do my best for the ladies lol.
