  • Tony Jeffries breaks down how to fight like Mike Tyson and his Peek A Boo style. Mike Tyson is not just known for his knockout power punches but also to his unique boxing stance which gives him great defense and counter punches.

Mike was a bit short compared to his opponents on his era but he used this together with the Peek a Boo style to his advantage. In addition to his short height he will slip punches very low resulting to his opponent's missing their head shots.

Tony I been doing boxing a year and I alway tried to avoid peek-a-boo because everyone use it. So I instead stick with the text book boxing at home for a year and i think i got a good grasp of it from watching you and other people with tips but I need to know. A person like me who is 5'3 and 145 pound, should I use peekaboo or not.

Mike is pretty unique in that he has a compatible body type for the style. He's short for a heavyweight, with low center of gravity, superb body control for directing various swinging strikes like uppercuts and haymakers. His height was a big advantage in this style and helped his defense immensely. Stocky with powerful legs. Excellent footwork for the style. Aggressive demeanor. Mike created a worldview that fed his aggression and helped him stay on the offensive. Mike had 'IT' at that time in boxing.

I used to box in peek a boo style as a raw amateur, but my last fight i had was against a shorter stokier fighter, and i had to box a different way, as everyone else i fought had been slightly taller than me, i don't think Mike had ever fought anyone shorter than himself so peek a boo was advantagious for him and his body type, as Tyson had extreme core strength.

This was really helpful. Without realizing it, I was taught something similar. I was taught the stance, keeping cheeks covered by the gloves, and the elbows close to the body, but didn't have much emphasis on the footwork of the peek-a-boo style. My feet are more straight forward but I wasn't taught the moving back and forth like Tyson. That's interesting. I guess I was taught a variation of the style but not the true one like Tyson had.

The way Tyson used to use his stance and Implement his lateral movement is almost the way a Thai boxer stands. The only thing we cannot do is dip as low as he did or else I would get knee or kicked right in the face. Other than that the footwork angles and power generation can be used across both styles. not a boxer here, but i do have a tiny bit of mma training. watching mike's old videos, i noticed he went for a lot, and i mean a lot of body shots, and this almost always lead to his opponents dropping the gloves just a a bit for a split second and mike would use this window for his big and fast hooks. knocking many of his opponents down after a few of these blows. plus mike was always moving and moving very precisely and fast to set all the above up and it often worked and worked fast

Your videos are fantastic, lots of intricate details in bite size details.
Tyson boxing stance is more like the Cuban stance
Front on stance, making both hands equally effective
