What makes Rembrandt such a good painter? Well, there is a lot I could say about that. For this video, I focus on just one aspect of his work to show you just how good he was.
This portrait of Johannes Wtenbogaert is just one of dozens he made in the 1630s, but it is of a man who was portrayed by several other artists as well. So it is a good example of a portrait that we can compare to other painters.
In this video, I give you some background information on both Rembrandt and Wtenbogaert to show you just how brilliant this portrait really is and what a genius Rembrandt was.

Interesting, too, what you say about the hands being painted by an assistant, because they strike me as particularly good--although there was nothing wrong with the way the master painted hands, he treated them generally more summarily even in the early paintings. Do you know which of his students might have been responsible?
