That’s why I wished she had watched it dub, the jokes even cater to a western audience, making the comedy that much better for people in the US (she barely laughs at the jokes in this). But sub elitists has to bombard her 1 episode into watching dub

    To Victoria, Every single frame that you are watching from Haikyuu was drawn by hand, with that kind of workload there is no way for the artists and animators to make each individual point in the game to be not only unique but consistent from an athletic perspective all the time. There are budget limits, deadlines, and whole plethora of hurdles to jump through to produce an anime of this caliber, therefore the production sometimes has to reuse footage. Considering how many points are scored in each game it is impossible to draw and animate all of them to the same quality. They devote time and energy into the biggest moments, because those moments like Nishinoya's foot dig deserve that time, energy, budget and manpower.

    • @ckaedonut
      @ckaedonut 2 года назад +23

      nice! i was reading the comments if someone mentioned this issue when Victoria notices Nishinoya's 'inconsistent' performance :)

    • @scoobydoo7220
      @scoobydoo7220 2 года назад +31

      Yeah! Like when they animate it frame by frame in the intros, each new drawing costs money so they gotta pay big bucks for those cool intro sequences. I like how Haikyuu prioritizes impactful moments for their animation budget instead of making everything look super low quality but long. The amount of detail they put into anatomy when players are running or jumping is insane! I keep thinking of this one clip of just Ushijima running, which may sound easy, but to have his baggy clothes ruffling and different parts of his body moving in different directions is very difficult to visualize. I wouldn't have known all this if I wasn't an art nerd, so it's normal to have these high expectations especially if you've been shown epic level stuff before. Like that one missed recieve animation in season 1 that bothered you lol! Even I noticed that, but they seemed to have stepped up their game with it.

    • @LeoSkyro
      @LeoSkyro 2 года назад +16

      and that applies to the manga as well, which all of this is based on.
      some times the author just needs a team to get a point without making it an entire scene because they're preparing for a later more important point.

    • @faithjolley6034
      @faithjolley6034 2 года назад +1

      @@LeoSkyro Exactly. Haikyuu isn't really about volleyball, volleyball is the context and catalyst for character growth and the themes that the author wants to portray. The volleyball part is important and it couldn't be swapped out with anything else without the story falling apart, but ultimately, it's a mechanism that the author is using. So it wouldn't make sense for them to go point by point because that's not Haikyuu's purpose. Haikyuu is, first and foremost, a story and not a game.

    • @LeoSkyro
      @LeoSkyro 2 года назад +5

      @@faithjolley6034 Well, I wouldnt go that far
      The volleyball is for sure the main subject of the story by any metric.
      Also the writing, themes etc is all in service of that, being pretty basic stuff, albeit executed well.
      Regarding the "they dont go point by point", just watch any other sports anime in existence, they all do the same thing, Haikyu is not alone in that.
      Authors need to have the story ebb up and down and sometimes some points just need to be dealt with quickly so that we can get to the important scene when suddenly and conveniently the writing and themes will all converge for dramatic relevance

    48:18 The old guy who shouted "I'm counting on you, Karasuno" is actually an old fan of Karasuno. He's been watching their matches during their glory days and even on the official match that Karasuno lost. He was the guy that Daichi and the rest overheard saying "Karasuno are now fallen crows." That's why the moment he said he's counting on Karasuno was monumental because he may be a fan, but he keeps it real. He critizices plays that aren't good, and now that he shouted he's support, the team knows they're doing a good job. And as Coach Ukai said, we can't let him down.

    With Nishinoya's inconsistency, I think it's worth remembering that the show makes a point of showing great players making mistakes. Remember during the Aoba Johsai match, there were times when even Oikawa would accidentally tape a serve. As someone who doesn't play volleyball, I always chalked up this sort of stuff as just the fact that these players are only human. More than that, they're only highschoolers, and they're playing in long, high-pressure matches.

    • @BleydTorvall

    I feel like I understand where you're coming from about Nishinoya, but I believe for this game the balls he doesn't pick up are more due to the skill and power of the spikers. Shiratorizawa is the best team they've played, and he can't possibly dig all, or even most of them. I also think it's worth mentioning that liberos in the women's game dig a much higher percentage of spikes than their counterparts in the men's game, so maybe that's the reason for the expectation (forgive me if I'm wrong).

    Hinata's running approach block actually is realistic, I tried it myself cause i was curious. You can do a running approach and jump straight up and It actually can help you get a bit higher. And of course sometimes you mess up and end up jumping forward anyway. Apparently the moment you stop on a dime to go up gives you muscles that extra spring for the jump, it just takes control and strength to go where you want. Its not practical because its exhausting and requires some set up, but if you got the time and energy its doable.

    25:06 Regarding that full run approach to a block, I'm not a volleyball player but I can use a basketball comparison here.
    There's different ways to convert your running into a complete stop & take a jump shot. It's definitely possible to go from a 100% hard sprint into a complete stop and jump vertically without drifting. It's a move I've used that's definitely more taxing on my legs and it also requires me to be running a lot closer to the ground than normal. So for a volleyball blocker, I think it should definitely be possible. Maybe slightly more consistent since you're not controlling a ball during the runup or while midair.

    11:31 It takes a volleyball player to understand why Ushiwaka means. Ushiwaka is 100% correct about Hinata. As a volleyball player, Hinata pretty much sucks. He can't receive. He can't serve. His blocking skills is kind of lacking. Sometimes he gets some nice blocks in, but overall he's not very good at blocking. Even his spiking skills are lacking. I mean, he's improved quite a bit since season 1, to the point that he can actually fight mid-air battles now, but it's still not great yet.
    Which is why I'm really really looking forward to season 4. 😂

    Even though people in Japan just say the romanized version of Volleyball or Volley, the actual characters for Volleyball is 排球, which is read as Haikyuu. (排 - Hai, 球 - kyuu). So Haikyuu means volleyball, which is the name of the show. Fun Fact :)

    One of the things I love about the S3 intro is how, in the spotlight scenes, each player's specialties are depicted - Tsukki's blocks, Noya's digs, Daichi's flying receives, and how the symbolism that is hidden there becomes a little more evident with every watch. That and the music is gorgeous.

    When the three third years first joined, he very loudly complained about how they were the crow’s wings were clipped, and how far the team had fallen and how disappointed he was.
    This is the first time he’s come to see them since then, and to have him cheer them so loudly, showing that he believes in them once again after shitting on them so hard and loudly for years…. It really helped raise Daichi, Suga and Asahi’s spirits.

      Anyone who has read the manga, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd bet that a lot of those bad receives/digs are just filler animation added by the animation staff to give us something to look at while dialogue happens or to mark the passage of the game. In a manga, an entire paragraph of dialogue can be made with a single still image, or even a few panels of various people in stationary poses, but that doesn't work so well in a fully animated anime episode. Animators often don't get the details just right, especially on technical movements, without a source to draw off of, so you'll sometimes see people make simplified moves or just stand still when they should be moving because the animators don't have a great source to draw from.

Ushiwaka has been portrayed as this unstoppable force, strongest ace, a player on the national team for their age group. If they were able to block or pick up most or all of his shots it just wouldn't make sense either. So i do think it was a better choice to make it seem like Noya is struggling

    7:01 I get what you mean. It would be like seeing a random blue apple in a movie and asking yourself: ''why is it blue?''
    But I guess they didn't want to overcomplicate the way they animate Karasuno losing a point. ''Let just make them lose the point and move on, most people are not going to notice these things''
    22:38 Hinata was impersonating Ushiwaka, that's why he had that weird face.
    25:13 I don't think so, Hinata does that because of his height, if it happened it wouldn't be in the pro-scene where blockers tend to be really tall so good luck finding video footage of someone doing that. Plus, compared to the ''spike into a set'', this is not actually good, there's no reason for people to try what Hinata does here. It's just something that worked for Hinata in that specific situation.
    29:39 Haikyuu is the japanese word for Volleyball. So yeah, this show is literally called ''Volleyball!!'' lmao

  • @Crystantemum
    @Crystantemum 2 года назад +37

    When you mentioned Nishinoya's been missing a lot there are a few reasons:
    - That was Ushijima (although it wasn't highlighted,) one of the top 3 attackers in the country.
    - Shiratorizawa is addition. Karasuno is multiplication.
    - They're playing a team that consistently battles to be number one in the country.
    - Total Defense wasn't an option.
    With so many top-tier offensive options to account for, Nishinoya isn't able to settle into a defensive rhythm. He has too many high level adjustments to make and constantly be aware of. He needs Total Defense, aka his teammates, aka the combined effort of multiple skilled people working in unison to match up to one incredible person.
    So, if Shiratorizawa has a combined skill total of around 10,000 and it stays around that much all game because their players are nearly perfect. Karasuno would have a score of 3,000 but that number jumps up sporadically when certain players are in certain positions. Because they built their team around working together and making up for each other's faults they grow quicker since 7 minds in unison are better than 7 fragmented ones.
    Edit: Avoid the comments underneath if you got to this point. (Thanks btw.) Long story short everyone's an expert and "fake it till you make it" is strong

    • @Crystantemum
      @Crystantemum 2 года назад

      @@PoemJunkie gotcha man. I see where the confusion is coming from now. But just to be sure, have you read the manga?
      Edit in: I ask because the anime is literally a carbon copy of the manga but obviously animated. Everything that happens on screen was intentionally written by the Mangaka originally so the animation budget has nothing to do with his misses and that's why your comment confused me

    • @dznkyle2260
      @dznkyle2260 2 года назад

      @@Crystantemum it means the mangaka literally cannot copy a real life players body movements because volleyball players move a lot in each play. So the mangaka has to reuse some plays. Of course shiratorizawa is the strongest team they've fough so far but most of the inconsistecy vic mentioned is just artistic limits. These are drawn frame by frame its way too time consuming for the mangaka and animator to fluidly animate every single point. So the answer is to just reuse animations and chance the jerseys and faces.

    about the noya thing you mentioned, sometimes the anime just uses repeated scenes, due to production time and other factors, for example it's better to focus more on impactful scenes within the narrative arc of the story, so points like this can just seem "barely animated" and unrealistic than noya would lose, that's a problem for the anime industry in general, even though haikyuu is one of the best directed animes I've ever seen, it doesn't escape from that
