I was watching "Joan of Arc" starring Ingrid Bergman last night. In one scene Joan, called the "Maid of Orleans", approaches a group of soldiers. When they see her you hear them say, "The maid! The maid! The maid! The maid!" At that point I started singing, "Everybody ought to have a maid...."...and that brought me here. :)
It's the best musical to movie translation ever! Not only is Zero Mostel absolutely hysterical, but the scenery is amazingly realistic (it's as dirty and sleazy as Rome truly was), and they cut out all the mediocre songs, leaving only the really good ones. I love this movie!
Poppa was Stationed at Camp Lejeune when I first saw this movie shortly after its release in Oct 1967 I was 8 at the time and watch this movie twice every year in commemoration to the timeline of its release....Poppa worked at the Jacksonville Drive In as a second hand job while he was in the Marine Corps and was a Projectionist there.... I can't began to tell you what an awesome time that was for us five kids. When everyone left afterwards the movie, we were cut loose on the 5 acre lot for the hour it took Poppa to close up, free popcorn and drinks till we couldn't take in another bite.... Zero Mostel was one of the best, I just miss these guys, you could actually be humored with out all the filthy dialogue and set with your children and enjoy the zaniness of these colorful characters.
I saw a bunch of girls do this song at an anime convention a few years back-of course, they were dressed up as a bunch maids. I think I was the only one who actually knew the source material.
We went a little overboard when we did this show...and it was hilarious! Whenever there was a commotion scene I would always shout "My leg!" From backstage, even if there was no one getting hurt on stage. "She died of an illness contracted while still on Crete." "What illness?" "The plague!" *Everyone Screams and Runs Away* "My leg!"
Alan Menken called this his favorite Sondheim song, and I can see why! I do prefer the broadway soundtrack version, with the "oops!" in the last bridge and the flute parts before the words "the house."
Best bit in a brilliant film. Just a the clip misses out Horden's dialogue with the "maid" just before the song. "...but you must know something." "Yes?" "Though you may have my body, you shall never have my heart." "Well you can't have everything..." :)
These guys are/were comedic genius and probably made more money that leaves comments here. Course I might be a tiny bit biased since I love this movie!
I absolutely love this movie. I bought it, and had the cashier look at it for a couple minutes, asking me about it. The theatre group in my hometown has done it a couple of times.
saw this when it first came out and still love it - Michael Hordern should be better know - everything from Sink the Bismarck to Taming of the Shrew and a wonderful radio turn as Gandalf in BBC's LOTR. Wonderful and versatile actor. My only fear in this correct age is that this song - and this musical - may be banished for a while
I’m happy to say that a concert version of this song popped up on the BBC earlier this year as part of the Sondheim tributes. Even in “this age” there can still be a bit of sauciness.
@@Vlad65WFPReviews thank you. I’m also a fan of Hodern. I loved his Gandalf and he was also a splendid Jeeves on radio. It is a dark time. It’s important that we find joy where we can.
I love this movie! but i wished they put in Hysterium's song "I'm calm" that songs songs hilarious! and "pretty little picture" too, thats a wonderful song! otherwse, a brilliant film version!
I'd assume that the top two were actually being hanged from a harness and lowered so it looked like it was a proper pillar pillar of people. I don't actually know though.
Fun fact, Phil Silvers was the first to be offered the role of Pseudolus on Broadway but turned it down due to his poor eyesight. He was then cast are Marcus Lycus in the film. Silvers then played Pseudolus in a broadway revival.
i too like the movie version, but i wish they kept hysterium's song "i'm calm" in it, i thought that song was fantastic! and "pretty little picture", that was a good one too! otherwise, i love the movie version!
I lost it when they started strolling on the Aqueduct
The first time I saw this movie I almost literally fell out of my seat I was laughing so hard.
Great chemistry between these actors and so well executed! Never tire of seeing Zero Mostel work!

Really?! Nice damn I would have loved to watch that
This is shot like an amateur music video from early RUclips and I kinda love it
This is one of my favorite movies.
Same

Brilliant film , brilliant song of many , brilliant actors , what more can I say brilliant 😆😆
this is my favorite song in my favorite movie and I'm pretty young!
Alan Menken called this his favorite Sondheim song, and I can see why! I do prefer the broadway soundtrack version, with the "oops!" in the last bridge and the flute parts before the words "the house."
This is actually better than most music videos ;)
it truly isn't

both risque and sweet; that's not easy to do.
I love that flying broom joke.
I saw the movie for the first time today. While I don't think it was great, this scene is absolutely magical.
reminds me of Everybody Wants to be a Cat, from the Aristocats!!
That's where Disney got the idea from.
Heh heh. I STILL sing this catchy song to this day... :D

One of the best songs and routines ever! Classic!!!
My sentiments exactly!
My school's theater company is doing this for our fall musical. Can't wait!
Four non-singers and yet, it works.
Keith Bryant Zero Mostel (Pseudolus) is a hell of a good singer. But I agree with the sentiment.
@@homeyiommi1921 agreed Zero was a fabulous singer,actor....in the original The Proudcers with Gene Wilder also in Rhinocerrous(sic),and many more...
@@jonathangibsonsr6537 Don’t forget that he was the original Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof on Broadway

I just crack up watching Zero Mostel mugging through the whole song.
a must forone's classic movie catalog I]ve been a fan since I first saw it in '69 or so!

Sir Michael Hordern was one of my favorite character actors and I agree about his performance in the radio version of LOTR. He was fantastic.

My favourite line: ...'was 1 a good year?... (refering to a bottle of wine)
I played Hysterium in high school. My favorite role I ever had
What a hoot 🤸
This movie is so underrated
i love this song it's so funny!
I'd LOVE a maid! A nice soft young mid 30s lady with a beautiful smile, please. Thanks.
Comedy GOLD!
I love this film. Not as good as the original, but the fact they got most of the original cast, and really had fun with this scene makes me happy. :)
Love how extra creepy Michael Hordern sounds singing his lines. 😂
Great song from a great movie. Saw it last night in fact. Had a thought. This song is just screaming to be used in an anime music video.
Robert Fisher zero mostel and Phil silvers great actors back then
Now I have a new song to sing
...I loved this movie as a kid (teenager) surprised my dad watched it and let us watch it - he was pretty strict about that kinda shit...normally
please upload this with the conversation between Lycus and Pseudous. It's an absolute scream
sooooooooooooo lucky, you should be proud!!!!
@WillScarlet16 I always took Psuedolus to be in his mid thirties, Hysterium to be in his early thirties, and Lycus to be in his late forties.
Anyone know what aquaduct they used? Always thought it was the Pont du Gard but there must be nearer spanish one.?
I'd assume that the top two were actually being hanged from a harness and lowered so it looked like it was a proper pillar pillar of people. I don't actually know though.
I guess I have unfortunate hair, but I love this!
:) *blushes* Well, I'm glad!
If zero mostel couldn't si g why was the lead role in fiddler?
You're very welcome. And thank you.
hay hay! im Senex in a production in Aber! woop
I need a maid.
Only Michael Hordern could turn this tripe into something like high art.
@WillScarlet16 Yeah I know THEY aren't. I was talking about the characters.
I let someone borrow my copy of this movie a long time ago and neglected to get it back ;p But I'll see what I can do...
