That barbecue chicken looks delicious!!
I copied your BBQ sauce recipe. I will try soon. Your homemade rolls look so good. I love your back porch. What a lovely place to sit and be still, read your Bible or a good book. So nice. Darlene, I am much older than you, so at 73, being a insulin dependent diabetic for 38 years, I do struggle with my energy. I used to let it get me down, but now I choose to be thankful for each new day God blesses me with. I make my list each day and what doesn’t get done, I tackle tomorrow. Your house always looks so pretty and you make so much from scrap, and yet, you always have a precious smile and testimony. None of us can do what we used to, but that’s ok. God bless my friend.❤️✝️💐
So good to hear from you Dee. You just take your time. It’ll get done right? Lord bless.
It’s harder for me at 56, then at 30 and 40, but mostly because I have bad knees and feet, and I get tired easily! I work full time and a lot of overtime, so feel I barely keep ahead! I feel I kept a better, cleaner house when my kids were at home, maybe because I had more energy! I absolutely love your summer porch! It’s so pretty! My grandma always had a screened in sun porch and it was where we had alot of good conversation, food and card and game playing, along with some watermelon or ice cream in the summertime! Good memories! Your bbq chicken sandwich looked delicious! Especially those homemade buns. The ham looked delicious too, especially the sandwich you were describing! Love a good ham sandwich! I too miss when my kids were little!
Thank you Tammy.
Very comfy, inviting porch.
I am 66. And everything is harder!!❤🙏🇨🇦
I will be 64 in November. Plan on retiring when I’m 65. I can’t wait to stay at home so I can do what I want when I want. 18 months to go!!!
Hi Darlene! I miss the days when my children were young. It was such a busy time, though. I find myself wishing I had spent more time with them instead of hurrying through everything so I could get it ALL done😞. Housekeeping seems easier now because I’ve learned shortcuts and prepare meals that are less labor intensive. I’m in my seventies now, so it takes me much longer to “get it all done”! Like so many others on this post, I have to rest in between chores. I don’t miss hitting the ground running every single day of the week. Some days I just stop and smell the roses and don’t do anything. As John Denver sang, “Some days are diamonds, some days (when the arthritis won’t leave me alone) are stone”. Love your channel
Yes stop and smell those roses🤗
Retired 76 years old….homemaking is easier
I can have my grands anytime ❤
Darlene, I agree with everything you said about doing all the housework when older. I too, have a bad back and right now it's really slowing me down. I just do what I can and am thankful for what gets done. There is tomorrow.
d
I enjoy watching your videos. They bring peace to my soul! ❤
Thank you T.
I just stumbled across your channel. I will be 63 this year.. homemaker about 40 years. I always wanted my career to be mother and homemaker. 😊
I feel homemaking does get easier. And when I can't do it all or don't want to , I don't.😉 I lose energy faster than when I was younger yet it is ok, I did a lot in all those years. I take more tea breaks😊
I, too, miss my 4 heartbeats so much some days, especially Sundays as that was our family day. Yet now I am blessed with 9 (almost 10) babyjoys and they give me life again. ❤
Thank you for sharing.
Well good morning!! I’m so happy you stopped by. Congratulations on your new baby🥰❤️.I hope you’ll stick around. We’d love to have you here. This is such a great group of ladies! (And a few guys) lord bless, Darlene
Hi miss Darlene, yes it does get harder, i am 73 years old and like you said no energy at all. I remember moving furniture to clean underneath and now i rely on my daughter to do all that. But dont feel sad, this is what life is about. I love all your videos and you have a beautiful house. Blessings from Texas
@@lindavaldez9929 hi Linda👋🏼😊 so good to hear from you. I see you soon. Darlene
Love your covered porch!😍
The summer house looks so good!
Hey Tracers👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
Healthwise at 62 for me (I'm about 95% bedbound) the only homemaking I can do is setting up our monthly grocery delivery, praying for my husband, and supporting him in the little ways a wife can. He's in poor health, too, but manages to take care of me and our tiny apartment, by the grace of God. It's funny, but when I was younger I didn't know Christ, had ok health, but did almost nothing that I didn't want to do. Selfishness was my middle name, much to my chagrin. Now, when the heart is willing, the flesh is failing. Still, I help him cook - he brings me ingredients and I act as prep cook and roller of dough. *smiles* God is very gracious to us, and we are thankful for the many blessings He pours out on us, the greatest of which is the firm certainty of eternity with our Savior.
Awww. I’m so glad I saw this before I went to bed. What a testimony. Love you Jeannine. You inspire me. I’d love to hear about your conversion story sometime. Email me if you are able. Souperat60@gmail.com. Lord bless. Darlene
It’s different… struggle in every season.
Those chicken sandwiches look really really good!
I'm almost 70.
I start my day with lots of energy and a long list!
House keeping,gardening,canning,you name it!
But I find that I run out of steam faster than I used to.
So that list may take a week to finish.
It is what it is!😄
That was so much fun Darlene, I'm not even tired lol , I simply love your Summer house, it's beautiful and cozy. I must try the BB sauce.
Thank you Brenda. Love hearing from you.
I'm with you on keeping up with your home. I am 68 and find it is harder due to physical limits. I just do not have the stamina it talked to keep up with all that needs to be done. I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Annette
Full time single dad, 43. It’s not too bad keeping it cleaned up. After I cook and dinners done, I clean the kitchen to get it out of the way. Then I straighten all the other rooms. My kids like to help with their toys (thankfully).
Good for you kiko. Thank you for leaving a comment. Lord bless, Darlene
Darlene…I have the exact same thoughts as you do.🙏🏻♥️
I’m almost 70 and worked as an OR nurse for 35 years. I too have a bad back and degenerative disc in my neck. I make a list like you Darlene but only get half done but feel lucky to be able to do that. It is harder to keep everything up. Those buns looked delicious and we love barbecue chicken. I liked your shoes. Are they comfortable? Love your porch and backyard. 🙏💗😊💐
I love my shoe/slippers. They’re Ugg’s. I have five FIVE 😮pairs. They’re so wonderful.
I get missing those carpool days. 🥺 I'm inspired to get my back porch cleaned up now. It's been unusually chilly here in S. Cali so this helped. That barbeque sauce looks amazing. I need to try making homemade hamburger buns.
Homemade buns are so so good. Toasted!!😊
Not just you!
Homemaking at 71 is a little different than homemaking 20 years ago - when my cherished husband went home to Heaven and I became confined to a wheelchair. I can't get to the tallest cupboards and when people put things that I need out of my reach, life gets frustrating. I have a long adjustable arm for reaching which helps me clean the ceilings when my 8 legged residents leave their threads behind. I have hardwood throughout every room except the kitchen, den and bathrooms so I use a broom and dust mop and mop and bucket instead of a vacuum cleaner. Although I'm very careful when I'm cooking I often burn myself reaching over a hot skillet or pan and doing dishes usually involves a puddle on the floor in front of the sink. But that inspires me to mop the kitchen before I head to my hospital bed for the night. All in all, I get done what I need to but it takes longer and has to be adapted to my "shorter" stature. God is so good to help me when I need Him - when my own strength wears thin, He comes in beside me to assist in whatever I'm doing. He has never once left me on my own and for that my gratitude is enormous and eternal.
Sweet story of Faith and determination Kari. Thank you.
Great bbq recipe, answer for me to your question, I am a single 66yo, and I find it easier to keep up with tasks now I am older. Although sometimes I just want the day to myself and will put tasks off till the next day. I enjoy living a carefree, simple life, and I absolutely love retirement. 🥰
I’m in my mid-fifties, and I’m not the same as me at 40! I used to lift a couch with one arm and vacuum with the other. I also have a longer to-do list in my head than my body can handle, haha! I’m making two hams to slice up for a celebration of life tomorrow. You totally inspired me to use every bit, especially the home made lard! Love the summer house, the yummy dinner, and most of all, your kind spirit! I hope you have a GREAT day, Darlene!
Thank you so much. I’m always happy to read your comments. I’m jealous~you have two hams 🤣
Hello Darlene 👋👋👋👍🥰👍♥️
Hi Cheryl.
❤❤
Hi Darlene, I have left over ham and ham bone in the freezer for this Fall soups. You have a lovelySummer home. Is it far from your regular home? God Bless.
I think you're doing fine and you do things with such class and kindness. We'd all do good to take our time and enjoy life as we go. Too bad we learn this later in life but maybe some young people will read this and know that all you need to do is slow down and enjoy your life and enjoy your children enjoy your family. Everything else can wait and it'll all be there tomorrow
Thanks Charlotte
I’m right there with you sister! I started realizing I had body parts, I didn’t realize I had until about 45! And now I’m like okay I know you’re there but I don’t want to feel you every day! 😂 I love your channel and love to hear you laugh, so for a little bit my mind isn’t on my pain, and you make me laugh! Hugs to you
I love your pink/white tablecloth. So pretty and reminds me of Mommie. I never thought about making my own lard your way. I can't wait to try making it next time I have a ham. I love being a full time homemaker at 62. The last job I had, my back went out on me in the spring. The big boss decided I owed my coworkers an apology for them having to pick up what I wasn't there to do. This was in a phone call while I was laying on a heating pad and under the influence of Dr. prescribed pain meds. That was in the spring. In the summer I tendered my resignation. And, come November, I had a month of inpatient physical therapy. Since then, I can pay attention to the symptoms and haven't had a hospital episode. Also, I don't have to worry about anyone but my sweetheart. He told me we would do whatever necessary to live on one income so I would never have the stress of a workplace. And, trust me, from what he does tell me about his job, he's dealing with more stress than ever. It's better than the last job he had. He gets to come home everyday and sleep in his own bed. He spent a lot of time traveling before we moved. Finally, he was ready to stop the travel and I'm so happy to have him home.
I’m glad he’s home too. Thanks Betty.
Your Summer house is beautiful and looks so inviting! What I find being in my 60s, and it's just my husband and myself, is one meal that I use to make for the kids when they were home, seems to take us 2-3 days to eat. So I have to be careful how much I cook or we're overloaded. Sunday suppers are fun when my kids come to visit, then I can splurge and cook a little more. I love to cook, so it's hard for me to adjust to make smaller meals. I will try your BBQ sauce, it looks yummy and would freeze well I'm sure.
Thank you Elizabeth. I do believe you could freeze the sauce.
Boy, Darlene, your comment about it being easier to keep house when older…. When I was younger I would rise early on Saturday and by noon my house was clean. Now that I’m in my 70’s, it takes me forever! I clean in stages, rest then tackle something else. Also, it seems it’s not so important now for everything to be done at once! The main areas to keep clean are kitchen and bathrooms and when everything else is tidy, that’s good enough! Love your channel.
Thank you so much Cindy. You are so dear.
I find motivation to be a problem we are not social much and some things just dont seem to bother me as much as they used to when the kids were home or having company in and out. Also have less energy to do things.
🥰
It's harder I'm 66 and was way easier even 3 or 5 yrs ago..❤
I am 59 and retired It is easier at times depend on what I am doing. There are so much I can't do anymore due to my knees being bad now. I wake up laying in bed thinking of all the things I wanted to get done today and I am eager to get started then My feet hit the floor and my body says oh that isn't getting done today. I love my life God is so good to me. So I really hate to complain or at least I Feel like it is complaining. One day at a time. Be blessed
You as well nana🥰
It’s easier now I’m retired from full time employment. Would be difficult keeping up with the cooking, cleaning etc if I was still working full time…just takes a little longer to get done what I did when I was younger…and that’s ok😊
Hi honey God is good,🙌🙌🙏❤️ i find it harder now dear, iam not as quick or can stand too long, and my craving for cooking has deceased, I also miss being a young mom for sure.. love you much ingrid Anna from Amish Dutch Country ❤️✝️🌻🌼🧓
I agree, sometimes it is easy, some days, hard. . I am 72, I used to be able to clean my house top to bottom in about three hours. Now it takes 3 days to decide what room I need to do. I’ve always loved cleaning and keeping it clean, I have lost the desire to it. I love your videos and recipes. Take care of yourself!
I am 64 and still working full time. Cannot get everything done. I tire easily. .it is a struggle.....
Have you tried the sauce with pork or ham? I find I have less energy the older I get ! I have multiple health issues
We have had it with pork. Excellent.
Im in my 60s and i think its harder but thats probably from just hurting aches and pain and not feeling good just my opinion 😂
Yep.
What a great looking meal Darlene!! that looks delicious!! n pretty summer home area..approaching 60 here so physically I'm finding it more difficult to do things because of the bad flares from the autoimmune issues.😔
I totally understand Ana.
How do you store ham lard?
I believe you can leave it out on the counter, but generally I put mine in the fridge.
I am 77 year young lol I find I am still a messy cook the only problem I don't think I clean up as well or as good but I have not kill anyone yet, lol I like that I can decide what I will make and if I change mymind hubby and can just have eggs or something simple our taste are pretty much the same been marri8d 57 years. I raise three kids and yes those years went by so fast it sad. I think many at 77 it easier in the long run.
Barbecue chicken looks good ❤ Sunroom looks Cozy and comfortable❤ I'll be seventy one this year I have slowdown. I still cook clean and garden but not all in one day. My Younger daughter who Turns 43 this year Was born with severe mental and physical disabilities. I love her and care for her every day And I can't imagine my life without her.❤. I pray I will have many more years with her before I physically can't Due to age related medical problems. I am grateful for today and everyday that we have together. Love to you all and enjoy the time we have with our family ❤❤
Dinner looked terrific. I am 66 and worked my entire life. Retired 2 years ago because my husbands health was very bad. So even being his full-time caretaker I love love love being a homemaker. Like you said you don't have to worry about being somewhere or waiting for a weekend. To me the weekend is every day. I take care of my husband and the house and the flower gardens and the veggie garden. All planted and maintained by me and worked on in my own sweet time. No pressure to answer to anyone. Have a small 25 lb. border collie named Boh that I walk numerous times a day and enjoy every minute of it. Yes, being a homemaker at 66 and retired is so much eaiser and nicer.
You are a wonderful person Cindy. Thank you for commenting 🥰
Hi Darlene.
Love this video. I’m 83 and still do all my work and cooking. Love cooking even if it’s just for one now. Not as fast as when younger.
Have always loved being a homemaker.
Me too Patsy.
It's harder due to illness, but I try not to worry, and everything you said is true.
73 and getting ready for 74 soon. I recently had a rude awakening when I woke up 8 weeks ago with extremely painful sciatica. I was b arely able to walk, take care of the house or yard or cook or grocery shop. Luckily my wonderful husband was able to take care of the necessities. But I learned valuable lessons - don't procrastinate on things that need to be done, keep your freezer full of meals to pop in the microwave, count your blessings every day even when you think there aren't any, be thankful for neighbors/friends who help you and think about how you can help others in the future, patience. I'm better now but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Do what you can when you can and thank the Lord for all He has done for you.
Oh Chris, you are so right!! Thank you for your wisdom. Hope everyone reads your comment. Lord bless, Darlene
Hello Darlene I think it's got harder. I'm 64 with health issues with my back and legs. So it takes a lot out of me to do one room when 10 yrs earlier clean the whole house. , The Ham and BBQ chicken looked delicious .
Thank you Debra
I love that you are so real, I was teary when you was. I do miss the good old days but I also enjoy being 65 and retired. I just take my time doing my housework and if I need to stop I know it will be there the next day. Thanks for all you do. God bless!
Thank you Vicki.
I love that you addressed the end of the video towards a “Senior” audience. I am a 70 year old widow and I totally relate to things being more challenging. I actually keep cleaning supplies on both levels of my house including vacuums and buckets and mops. I am very careful about going up and down steps. My washer and dryer upstairs in the bath room no need to carry baskets of clothes up& down steps. I now make a list of big projects (big to me) that I want to get done. I work on them an hour a day and if it takes a month who cares. I know Martha Stewart isn’t coming for tea. If I am too tired to cook then I have a bowl of cereal or a sandwich for dinner. Also there are days I don’t accomplish anything and that’s ok to. It was really refreshing to find a video that addresses older people! Thank you 11:55
Hi there Fran. Thank you so much. Yes indeed aging is a real thing!🤗 I truly appreciate your comment. Are you new to my channel? Hope to hear from you again. Lord bless, Darlene
Yes Darlene it does get harder. I am 66 soon to be 67 and yes we do “just run out of energy” and it is not just you. After I weed my garden, mow our lawn and then get meals I am done in. I, like you, still have the list but I say it will be there tomorrow for me. We do the best we can but I wouldn’t trade being a homemaker for anything. Your room is beautiful, your meal looks delicious and I say that was a lot to accomplish in one day. You should be proud. Take care and God bless you.
Thank you.
Your summer house is so warm and inviting. I too struggle to get everything done that I’d like to accomplish. It’s easier to keep our home tidy without children here and we don’t get a chance to have our grandsons here very often. But fatigue is an issue and I just try to be grateful for what I can and want to do. This body has brought me this far and it will continue if it’s God’s Will.
😊
It depends on your health and physical abilities.
Yes indeed.
Yes I so related to Your Question. I'm 64 now and I often wonder how I accomplished so much when I was Younger with 2 kids, a FT Job, a home, a husband, a garden and everything each of items required. At My current age I can only accomplish maybe 10 percent with current health issues. Ones Health is Everything. Thanks for Sharing.
You are so right.
Yummy , looks delish !!
Thank you 😋
Darlene, please pray for me. I had major surgery in April and ever since I cannot swallow very well and I'll ask prayer for thank you.
God bless you
Oh I’m awfully sorry to hear this! Of course we will pray. Pls keep me posted. Ask for prayer anytime. Darlene
I am 66 and just can't accomplish in one day what I used to. I tire more easily and have more pain. I have been a homemaker all my married life, 48 years, and I have loved every season of my life. Right now 7 grandchildren under the age of 12 keep me busy!
Love the summer home porch
What fun
Delicious dinner
I can’t crawl and clean with a total knee replacement of 8 yrs ago
Not much hands and knee cleaning. Lol
I'm 60 and disabled for past 4 yrs, so chores are very difficult now, grant it, if my husband wasn't such a slob it would be easier.
Honey I feel the same way! I can’t do like I use to. I want to do more but I have back pain also. It really hinders me. I do my best. The recipe you shared looks really good! Thank you for sharing!
Hi there Sharon. Totally get it!! Blessings to you and thank you for your comment. Darlene
@@Souperat60 you’re very welcome
It is certainly harder. I do a little and rest a lot. Sometimes when we have guests and I have to cook a lot I am exhausted but I still love to do it and I still do it. I praise the Lord for every day I am able to get out of bed. I know so many people and not able to do even that.
Hi there Kitt. You said it beautifully. Are you new to Souper at 60? I’m glad to have you here. Lord bless, Darlene
Love your idea about making lard from the ham. Never thought of that, but will do it from now on. Your porch is so nice. Love the cushions and other fabric touches. And I just have to say that your general happiness about life itself is refreshing. You can visually see that the Lord is living in your heart. Blessings!
Could you share your sourdough bun recipe? They looked delicious!
Sure.
1/2 cup sourdough starter, active and bubbly
3/4 cup warm water
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup melted coconut oil or butter
3 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
In a stand mixer with a dough hook, add sourdough starter, warm water, all purpose flour, melted butter or coconut oil, honey, salt and egg. Knead for 5-10 minutes with dough hook until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a greased bowl and cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap for 8 hours.
Transfer the dough to the refrigerator and chill covered overnight.
Divide the dough into eight equal pieces.
Shape the buns by creating a flat surface on top and tucking the remaining dough underneath. I also like to create a little tension by rotating each bun slightly on a lightly floured surface.
Cover the buns with plastic wrap or a damp tea towel and allow to rise until doubled.
Beat the egg yolk and water and brush the tops of the buns with the mixture.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds. (optional)
Bake the buns for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees. You want them to be golden on top.
I make it the night before and let it sour all night till I’m ready to shape, rise and bake. They’re wonderful.
@@Souperat60 Thank you so much!
I find that I got more accomplished when I was working and was in a limited time schedule to work with. In retirement it depends how how my back feels. So I am right there with you Darlene.
Definitely!!
I remember a soup my grandmother would make with a ham bone. I hope we can taste all the good food from our life here on earth in Heaven. 😊
I am 63 and enjoy homemaking more than I used to. Oh how I kiss those days when my boys were little. I really enjoy spending time with my granddaughters. They like Grandma to come to their house so they can help me cook dinner. The downside like you said I have so many things each day that I want to do but my body just gives out.
Hi Darlene, it was lovely coming along with you while you did a little housework and cooking your dinner. I love your sunroom, and I can imagine that you would spend a lot of time out there in the warmer months. In fact, I can imagine you and your family out there now.
I am in my 60's and ever since my husband died, I have been overwhelmed with maintaining the house and garden now by myself. However, I have decluttered both house and garden over the past couple of years removing all the unwanted things that made extra work.
In my home I have removed around 70% of clutter including quite a few pieces of furniture which makes it now easy to vacuum! I have also removed most of the ornaments and nick-naks etc... that filled up the flat surfaces which makes dusting a breeze.
In my garden I have removed a lot of plants that require too much attention by me... including 30 rose bushes! I now only have 7 roses which is more manageable, and I enjoy them more.
God's blessings, love and hugs, Gloria 🤗🌻❤
Oh Gloria, I’m sure you miss your husband so very much.
