Neil Beri yes and no, mono line is great for the alvey and had been reliable for years to fish with but if you like the braided line, you can do what I’ve done and mixed the two together. I’ve got 200 metres of mono tied with a uni knot to 200 metres of braid.
Recently purchased a 40B XL.... worst reel I've paid money for. What ever you set the "drag" at, that's how difficult it is to reel. Great concept, but they decided to say "Screw our customers" and just shit all over their customers.
John, no disrespect but I've seen your comments on a couple of videos now. The reel you're referring to isn't a typical Alvey reel, it's a basic reel made for kids and beginners. The rest of their range have proper drags and are rock solid reels that take a beating and perform flawlessly. And no I don't work for Alvey, just a happy customer who's fished with them for 25+ years.
It's an entry level reel that costs three times what other better working reels do. $35 US is not a child's reel. If you're paying $100+ US for a reel, you've more money then sense.
It makes that sound if the drag isn't tight. I don't know that specific model so you're probably better talking to a tackle store employee who knows Alveys.
The 40B XL doesn’t have a “drag” you 🤡 Its a basic direct wind reel. The component you are referring to is Secure the spool onto the spindle/reel backing plate. If you want to apply drag to direct wind Alvey reels you use the palm ✋ of you hand, which you apply to the underside of the spool 🧵 I’ve got two large direct wind (no drag) Alvey surf reels (600A & 650A) which are over 40yrs old, they both operate and catch fish today, just as well as they did when I brought them - fantastic reels
