  • These African Zebras were once a part of the Zoo at The Hearst Castle, now roaming the Hearst Ranch along Highway 1 in San Simeon, California.

When I took the Hearst Castle tour I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a heard of zebra on the shuttle ride down the mountain. I’m surprised more people don’t talk about how incredible it is that wild zebra live in central California.

It’s cool. Similar thing in Columbia. Hippos are all over Columbia. Because Escobar like Hearst had a private zoo. When he went down they let the hippos out. They are thriving. It’s kind of a problem. Because hippos are MEAN

These are probably the happiest zebras in the world bc they don’t have predators

      Pumas apparently occasionally hunt them.
      But that’s really about it.

Approximately two yrs. ago, as I was driving down Hwy. 1 on my way from Carmel to Long Beach, I happened to notice a number of cars parked on the east side of the road and then noticed that there were several people lined up along a fence on the east side of the road, at the bottom of the hill that the San Simeon Castle sits on. Having driven this coast many times before, I'd never seen any cars parked alongside the road, nor had I seen a large group of people lined up against the fence like that. So, naturally, I slowed down almost immediately and quickly came to realize what it was all about. There was a rather large herd of Zebra, of all sizes, prancing about and playing on the hill. I'd never in my life seen more than one or two Zebra together in any time or place and even then, only at major zoo, and here it appeared that I was witnessing an entire herd of at least fifty of them. It was simply mind-boggling! Years ago I'd gone on one of the tours San Simeon offers, so I was aware that WR Hearst had at one time curated a zoo of sorts. But, until that day two or so yrs. ago, I had no idea that an entire herd of these magnificently beautiful animals was alive and well and prancing around on a hill on the central coast of California. Seeing them was a huge treat and, considering the fact that I've driven past Hearst Castle so many times and had never before seen the herd, it was a miraculous experience.

Proof that not all invasive species are bad

To be considered an invasive species, the species has to be harmful to the environment its introduced in, not just non-native

I'm surprised Pleistocene Park supporters aren't talking about this.

@@dino-boy0155 No, they'd die from the cold in the Pleistocene Park.
