When I was a boy, I used to ride my bicycle down the sandy dirt road to the end of Isles of Palms, take walks through the pine and palmetto forest and climb the 100-200 ft. sand dunes at the end of the island. There was an old palmetto log cabin with a collapsed roof in the middle of the forest and wild goats that I guess swam over from Goat Island. It was a boyhood Robinson Crusoe paradise. Imagine my surprise one day when a security guard in a white pickup told me I couldn't come down there anymore. They still have security guards at the gates that will tell me I can't come there. But that's OK, I don't want to go there anymore.
All of that was bulldozed, ALL OF IT, to make Wild Dunes. An interesting name for a place with no dunes, that is washing away into the Atlantic Ocean. Sand from nearby pits on the mainland is trucked in, dumped on the beaches and spread out to wash away with the next storm. The golf course is well-manicured by landscaping crews from south of the border who also keep the coyotes from eating little Fifi when Lovey and Thurston Howell are out for their evening stroll. Fine dining and libations are provided by chefs brought in from "off."
South Carolina has the best coastal and wetlands protection regulations in the nation, but there is constant, unremitting pressure to "Develop" it. Other states have long ago succumbed to this pressure. They no longer have biodiverse wetlands and marshes that are the richest nursery for all of our marine species.
