Went here today in 5/2021 and the only thing open was a post office stop and the Joann's. I was there at around 1030 am so I may have missed the mattress store. I hope it does well, deadest mall I ever saw. Even more than Dort in Flint.
I need to visit this mall, one of these days! Orchards Mall has LOOOONG been on my list of dead and also struggling malls I've wanted to visit, but hadn't done so yet. Nice job, with your video of this place. Also if you haven't already visited on a side note, you should visit Concord Mall in Elkhart, IN. And lol OF COURSE I mean do that, once all the business closure restrictions get lifted by various governors! I love how the 1970s interior feel is still intact, at this mall. In the last year I've heard reports from those living closer to Concord vs. me, that longtime stores are starting to leave that mall. I.e. Spencer's, Joann Fabrics, and I believe a few other stores. Hobby Lobby and JCPenney are the last 2 anchors, at this mall btw. This mall used to have a Elder-Beerman(later became Carson's), but it closed barely before Bon-Ton made the official decision to shutter all their stores.
JOANN was not the original anchor. The original anchors were Sears, Walgreens *Junior anchor* And JCPenney. And the Joann opened in the 2000's, not the 1900's
This was a great video! We were getting serious Berkshire Mall (MA) vibes from this place. Really great you got to document this place before it goes down the drain. Excellent work!
Born in st Joseph raised in Benton harbor and have great memories of the orchards mall especially the arcade games and back in the 80’s there was a sit down for adults/play section for kids #sweetmemories iand in the food section there was a cookie shop which had some delicious fresh baked chocolate chip cookies which came in a purple bag😋and as I got older into music “Camelot” was the store in the mall to get your tunes👌 Thanks for sharing bro I left BH and haven’t been back since 2003 I miss it at times!!! What was the song playing at the end it was 🔥???
My aunt owns the consignment shop Nakitas Place next to the inflatable play area. She is closed on Saturdays. Give her a shout out if you ever visit again! 😃 I would have loved to see the different businesses open in the mall. Maybe a couple of interviews from business owners? I haven't been there in a very long time! I love that you spoke about the history of the mall! Thanks for the video! 😃🎉
When I was a kid we would shop here and go to KB toys. And there was an arcade in the food court. When I was a teenager I would go to the record store a lot . It was called record town then switched to fye. The slackers arcade that is there is a great place to go. My kids love it and it’s super cheap to do the bounce house. They also have laser tag. I wish they would move to where target was bath and body works moved over there. Jo Ann fabric and slackers are really the only places to go and you can’t even get to jonann from inside the mall.
That’s a beautiful building, the new town has more liberty I believe, people are not confined inwards but get out to experience the weather, or venture outdoors more. I call it enabling approach although I’d like to know if these spaces are fighting back and how
Let's take a peak at this Michigan gem! If you seen this video before you're right. I reworked this film with refined narration and a more meaningful intro along with more stable camera work.
My store is still in the mall, it's actually the largest independent mattress store in Michigan. Doctor ZZZZ'Z Mattress Center. Right next to the food court. You omitted it. Willfully so?
Saw your video too on that . Technically I did get shut down, it happened near the last bit of the video. Couldn't get a recording of it though. I was able to get a few extra in though. Thanks again for the view.
I got surrounded by securty as I got cought taking photos of San Jacinto mall off of I-10 near Houston, Texas. They said that they would arrest me for taking photos, as it is against the law to take photos or videos of the inside of the mall. I asked why, they said it was due to 9/11, thinking of planting a bomb inside. I expressed that I am into architecture and had an interest in the history of the mall. I then requested to talk to mall management and the denied me to even talk to them. I told them that many malls were being torn down and replaced with outside shopping centers. They asked me to delete a photo, but they never knew about the other photos that I had already taken. I was lucky not to be arrested at that time. It was explained to me, the only way to take photos or videos, is to video or photo children. What the sad part was, a year later, San Jacinto mall did get torn down a year later after I had visited that mall. It was a cleaning woman who reported me and called security on me.
This place was a failure LONG before Biden ever took office. I worked security there. If no one else will say it, I guess I have to, The blacks killed this mall. No one felt safe there, not even security. I was never so happy to leave a place. The best thing that could happen is if an army of bulldozers levels it. Twice I had to respond to fights and there was gun play. All I had was a a radio. Blacks killed this mall, don’t build malls in the hood. The gangs even said it themselves, where else are supposed to go? This mall became their turf, and shoppers never came back, and they never will.
I live here and used to visit this mall frequently.. it was a great video... and i would love to see that mall come back to life
The security guard that I talked to said that the new developer had some plans but it may not be for a mall usage.

I’ve been there recently a few times and every time I’ve gone there there has been a new store so I think it’s coming back

Hardly any stores, Joann is moving, and it's now overrun with seagulls.
Good video. Sad mall. Thanks for filming.
Hey Nancy. Sorry about the 2 year not doing vids. Will do more.

A huge tragedy and I think this will ultimately doom the mall.

Originally it had a sears and jc pennys
Did I get that wrong:/
@@UrbexAPeakInside sears was a big draw, till Lowe's went in.

I was talked to by security so I didn't get a lot of filming that I wanted to.
That's your store? Wow
@@Yudentheepicboy yes, we have been in this mall for over 16 years
@@norbertzimpfer7548 that's cool
This was really great. Its definitely gone downhill. Luckily you didn't get shut down by security like I did though 😂

Even though very nice looking, most single level malls don't do that well as 2 level or multi level malls.
Agreed.
The now recession and hyperinflation will sink this place. I doubt it will be open by January. So sad...but people have no money.
