  • Welcome to part 2 of the Charlestowne Mall Series. After the rest of the secondary stores have left, it only leaves the Von Maur and the movie theater left. Only a being able to access these places from the outside, the entire interior of them all is completely locked and shuttered.

I go back to this video every once in a while to relive all the memories of friends killing time and walking around through the years as less and less it revolved around the stores, and more around the eerie peace of how empty it was. I have worked in the St. Charles area since the early 1980's. Saw the old St. Charles mall and the Piano Factory outlet get killed off when Charlestowne opened in the early '90's. Geneva Commons opened in the early 2000's and began diverting customers away from Charlestowne, sealing its fate. We used to go there quite a bit although Charlestowne was not in the best location. In its heyday the place was very busy especially during Christmas. We went to Geneva Commons only once during the holiday season. It took us forever to leave the place, the parking lot was pure gridlock. I miss Charlestowne, lots of good memories there with the family.

    Ah, thank you so much for this one. This mall is very sad to see. My brother and I have always loved this mall very much and we’ve been keeping up with it’s progress ever since 2016...the company that transformed it into The Quad, Krautz, said in 2016 that they would initiate construction and gave a vague painting like image of what “it would look like” on their website. It’s been four years, and it is like a blue dye poured on you, your fingers and toes aren’t dyed, but the rest of your body is.

    The life cycles of a mall: Pay off local politicians for zoning changes, building of infrastructure. "A great opportunity for our little community!" And of course tax beaks. Build the mall by various construction firms as a way to launder money from oversees, often from the Bahamas. This will invariably go "over budget." Hand mall over to managers who will bring in businesses and try to turn a profit through rents etc. Many smaller stores and kiosks (just say, "I wonder how they stay in business with so few customers?") used for additional money laundering. Eventually let the mall fall into disrepair and complete failure. Liquidate assets, and make a hefty profit just from the act of closing, or else use the loss for tax reasons. Close it down, and build a new mall close by, as a way to repeat the cycle of corruption and money laundering. And that folks, is the sad truth.

  • @dvferyance
    @dvferyance 4 года назад

    I would also another factor is being far from a major highway. Look at the malls that are still doing well. Woodfield is close to 90 and 290. Fox Valley is close to 88. Joliet Mall is close to 55. This mall was too far from an interstate so anyone wanting to get to it would have to spend a lot of time sitting at red lights.

    3:13 You talk about SOME competitors to the mall (Geneva Commons, Premium Outlets, etc.) BUT let's not overlook the self-defeating proliferation of stores and restaurants along arterial roadways. Where once they were concentrated (historic downtown, the mall), now there were competitors. Throw in online shopping, and that explains the decline
