An important point can also be the culture of getting things wrong. We are taught at an early age "your doing that wrong!" But not taught that making mistakes is a way to learn. As an adult, making mistakes is often punished too. This doesn´t make it any easier to accept that making mistakes some of the time is a way to improve. Thanks again for putting this in perspective and helping us to get better :)

Say I'm practicing an 8-bar passage. I might start on bar 8 and just practice the last bar. When that's pretty solid I'll play bar 7 into 8, then 6 7 8, and so on. When the latter part of the passage is more familiar than the earlier part, you're always starting with the most challenging part and it gets easier as you play through.

As a professional musician with two masters, this is the two ways to practise that I've learned from my teachers, and probably they from their teachers.
It's very interesting to learn that it's actually the misstakes that make us learn.

Hi Josh, as always absolutely inspiring and helpful. I preordered the new book, nowing the former and looking forward. S. Beckett: "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail better." You show us, that it is crucial, how we fail! Thanks a lot. Gerd

Does your new book only teaches Clawhammer? I want to learn backups and also bluegrass. I've been learning and some basic /medium bluegrass banjo tunes for decades - my problem is motivation. Does the book comes with an audio? What tunes will I learn from your book?

The book is about applying neuroscience to learn better.
