If he took it apart as soon as he got home and cleaned it, then it's most likely fine
Most saltwater reels are sealed to a certain degree and can handle it. He can rinse it off with fresh water, or go a bit further and take it apart. I once reeled in a rod & reel that was submerged under water for I don't know how long. I took it home, took the reel it apart, lubed it, and it works.

Thank you for some warm water fishing! We vacation in Sanibel and Captiva every summer and it's an amazing place to fish and free dive! The locals are great and there's some killer food! Be sure to catch a sun set from the beach down by rc otters and the murky duck it's breath taking!
