  • A new film by Alexander Payne, director of SIDEWAYS and THE DESCENDANTS. Paul Giamatti stars in THE HOLDOVERS, in select theaters October 27, everywhere November 10.
From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them -- a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) -- and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

Saw this trailer before Oppenheimer, I was blown away that this trailer actually managed to capture the actual look of an old film that so many try and fail to capture because they look too polished. Seems to be a smart, heartwarming film! Almost pulled out of time! Can't wait to see it!

This trailer feels so much like what trailers felt like in the late 90s or early 2000s... movie trailer voice, the editing between the music and the voices/lines and the shots, that very particular tempo between those three things... It struck me how I haven't seen a trailer like this in very a long time. It's super well made, just on that basis.

First off I have to say this is one of Paul Giamatti’s greatest performances in his entire career. And the rest of the cast is perfection as well. Everyone involved in this movie is Oscar Worthy. The Holdovers really reminded me of the film style and comedy/drama tone of classic 1970’s era classic movies from the great Hal Ashby, such as The Landlord, Harold And Maude, The Last Detail and Being There. Also it reminded me of classic 70’s movies from Bob Rafelson like Five Easy Pieces and The King Of Marvin Gardens. Stunned to see a trailer that doesn't have the patented Netflix drum banging the drama home to emphasise how you were about to witness the biggest thing ever. Even the new Pixar trailer had it, because Disney presumably told the makers that every film now needs one. I was expecting the only escape I'd ever get from this was to just watch overseas movies like the new Miyazaki, but Payne proves a trailer can be done without it and the Universe doesn't immediately self destruct afterwards, go figure.
