Archaeologists just south of Kabul are racing to preserve one of the richest Buddhist historical sites ever found. The ancient monasteries and statues in Mes Aynak are under threat from a Chinese company which plans to develop the area in order to tap into the world's second largest copper deposit. Many fear the $3bn mining contract, Afghanistan's biggest commercial deal, will lead to the destruction of thousands-of-years old heritage sites. Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse reports from Mes Aynak.

Modern day Afghanistan was part of great Indian empires like Maurya Empire and Pala empire, which resulted in a rich Buddhist heritage of Afghanistan.

perhaps the Chinese could operate an underground copper mine. if the site is not directly above the copper than the open pit that the mining company plans could be rerouted around the ruins. if the ore is as good as what the Chinese are saying than it could be more economic to mine useing underground methods. we can t devastate cultural heritage, but Afghanistan needs the money from this mines taxation
China was never told back in 2007/08 that there was a large ruined Buddhist site on top of the proposed extraction area. The government even moved out all the Pashtun villagers in preparation for mineral extraction before the site was found, and many of these villagers, who were expecting jobs on the mine site, are now impatient. Some have been employed by the archaeological dig. The Chinese did not start the operation out of consideration for the site - they are waiting to see how (cont)

Remember the Awakened never teach religion. They teach the path to safe land from birth and death. I am buddhist but I find it no religion. All religion created by blind men after the teacher passed by. No religion is permanent because over time people change from one belief to another. History shows us that. Problem here is not about the religion, but how the humanity can be saved. In those ancients time of Buddha, the teacher, millions have abondened their homes and living in remote areas, coming in town except for begging and teaching. Some, Awaken masters still exist. They do their work siliently! Unless blind men add it to another religion and kill others in the name of it!

Well don't they usually when they do this kind of work? The question is how to create jobs for other people by preserving sites like this rather than turning them into a giant mine, whose destructive impact will be far greater than the mining that's been going on over the last 5k years. I'd think it's worth saving the history of a country that played a pivotal role in turning China into the world's largest Buddhist nation (even now), along with the rest of E and Central Asia & the Himalayas.

I'm surprised we haven't heard about archeologists being kidnapped, tortured, and beheaded; all because they're trying to learn and preserve the history of Afghanistan, (or the whole region for that matter). Not always. Sometimes they find sites they can't salvage. Sometimes they have to choose which artifacts need to be dug up and moved or left to there fate. A few sites that i know of are underwater and could still be acessed given the proper permissions but a good portion of the artworks were washed away as they were earth or plant based paint. One in Italy and the other in France. Few here in the USA too(maybe not so historic though) as they play into US history all the same. Its a shame.

Logar province, in which Mes Aynak is located, was (and still is to an extent) a Taliban stronghold. If the Taliban does make a comeback post-2014, these artifacts could very well be in danger.
The Chinese mining company won this contract back in 2007/08 (which AJ conveniently omits in the report). The site was discovered right after, so the Afghans and foreign archaeologists had 5-6 years to excavate and remove everything. Like I said in an earlier post, what would most likely happen is that this will be interrupted by renewed violence after the US withdrawal next year - China will lose its concession (although it hasn't invested much in the first place) and these treasures (cont)

Plus, if native Afghans like the Taliban (and don't try to claim they are not, since they pretty much represent the political consciousness of rural Pashtuns) don't give two sh*ts about their historical heritage and actually destroy them like the Bamiyan Buddhas, then why should people from other country care?
