"Take My Breath Away" is the 1986 #1 hit by Berlin and sung by the brilliant and talented Terri Nunn.
Giorgio Moroder first offered the song to The Motels, who much later released their original demo, which is fairly similar to Berlin's released version, on their compilation album Anthologyland (2001). As with almost all demos, The Motels' version was not perfected like Berlin's final release. As a demo, it merely demonstrated the song's potential. This dance version was one of many made for the Berlin original and was played in dance clubs. While Terri Nunn's version of "Take My Breath Away" is by far the definitive in its original version, Martha Davis' version paved the way for what was one of the most successful ballads of the 1980s.
Eventually Moroder thought of the band Berlin, whose song "No More Words" he had produced. A few changes to the lyrics were made before Terri Nunn recorded the vocals. Moroder has said that of all the songs he has produced in his career, he is most proud of this song.
The Motels are an American new wave band from Berkeley, California, that is best known for the singles "Only the Lonely" and "Suddenly Last Summer", each of which peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, in 1982 and 1983, respectively. In 1980, The Motels song "Total Control" reached No. 7 on the Australian chart (for two weeks), and their song "Danger" reached No. 15 on the French chart.
Anthologyland is a compilation album released in 2001 containing material from the new wave band, The Motels, plus work by Warfield Foxes (an earlier incarnation), and solo work by Martha Davis, including a couple of duets with Sly Stone and Ivan Neville. This two-disc album is a collection of alternate takes, demonstrations, live recordings, outtakes, and soundtrack releases and features the original demo of "Take My Breath Away."
