I remember seeing him at the Hollywood Bowl, probably his Bowl debut. The "girls" had been dancing a while, then all of a sudden he came flying from behind the curtain stage right, clear to the center of the stage it seemed. He was already airborne when you first saw his pointed foot. Have you ever heard 18,000 gasp all at once??? It's an amazing sound. Sold out that night. It was soooo thrilling. I've never been able to figure out how he could fly so far so high.

I know what you mean. I attributed the grimace to a painful landing -- an attempt at stoicism, but I also see the mixed emotions. While he hated the authoritarian and limiting regime he escaped, he was also heartbroken at having to leave his family, culture, and mentors like Pushkin. He loved the over-the-top praise he got in the West but accepted it with flared nostrils and undisguised contempt. What a character. Love him.

he's amazing! and, to think, he didn't start until seventeen! seventeen! he graduated and learned this in a few years. he was obviously born to dance.
not to mention, the Vaganova School took a huge chance on him, bringing in a young adult without any ballet training to train. they saw something in him. this proves that, even the school, which a lot claim to be 'harsh' and 'cruel' recognized his talent. The school is not as horrible as many think it is, considering this HUGE risk they took.

So glad you like it. Even though I can tell he's very nervous, he was still such a new and thrilling experience for the audience - they loved him!
Because the film comes out blurry, you can't really see his expression - more of a grimace than a smile - at the end of Gayne. It's actually cute, like a little boy who isn't sure he ended up in the right position or not. Imagine the pressure he was under!

And there were many great actors--Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir Charles Laughton, Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, and Geraldine Page among them.
But beyond dance, Nureyev was also a tremendously important historical figure, his defection from the Soviet Union beginning a tide of defections (which later included Baryshnikov) that contributed to the collapse of a tyranny.

    • @lidiabonini3568

Gymnastic. You got it right. His defection from URRS made him a star. He would have been one of the many. But having come this side if the world made him a star totally out of proportion since he had no competition in our stages. To me he is the most overrated of modern dancers.
