  • Pioneer surf cinematographer, filmmaker and board designer George Greenough recently found some lost 16mm waveriding footage from the late ‘60s. It has never been seen… until now.
Long before HD video cameras went digital and dinky, Santa Barbara native George Greenough was strapping a full-sized film camera to his back and capturing POV footage from inside the tube. Not only did he envision the shot, he hand-built the water housing for his camera to make it happen. It was just one innovation of many from a man who helped define modern surfing as much as anyone in history.
Fast forward to 2014 and George is still inventing new ways to experience the ocean. The guys at Patagonia Australia caught up with George recently and he mentioned finding some lost footage from the days of shooting "The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun." With support from Patagonia, George cut the footage together and added narration explaining his motivation and techniques for getting the shots. Music by Band of Frequencies brings a taste of the psychedelic vibe that permeated the original film. The footage premiered in August 2014 at Patagonia’s Cardiff, Santa Monica and Bowery surf shops, and now we’re releasing it for posterity.
We hope you enjoy this six-minute glimpse into surfing’s past. Special thanks to George, Glen Casey, Johnny Abegg and the crew at Patagonia Australia for making it possible.

In the 50's 60's was in awe of George's innovations ... but never knew how much he had documented what he was doing over the decades. Thanks Patagonia for posting this George Gem!

Look at the film and you can see why he remembers what he did.
"the tube, looking like one you would draw in school" (on the right side margin of your notebook, the kind you can flip through).

When i was a grom i had the pleasure of finding one of George's Spoons in a garage in an old Forestry Commission lodge at Bundagen on the NSW North Coast in the 1980's. I was small i used it as both a kneeboard and stand up for about a year. It was a really unusual board to use and generated a ton of speed from loading up the fin on a bottom turn, i have never felt anything like it including an old McTavish i owned with a similar Tuna Tail type fin. I wish i hung onto it.

Unreal voice-over. So cool to hear a pioneer talk about what was going through his head and what he was doing. Thanks for posting this.

George . I am 68 years of age and surfed in my hey day through those unforgettable short years of an era the likes of which we will never see again. I could not believe what I was seeing in your footage then - and I still can not believe what I am seeing as I view it again - right now. It is an absolute credit to your way ahead of it's time thinking, particularly considering the kind of materials you were using to film it. This footage deserves every award in the book.

What a legend.... all the surfers nowadays that use Gopro. Imagine having 70lbs of camera strapped on your back. Anyone posting surf videos should make sure they've seen Crystal Voyager.
Final scene set to Pink Floyd 'Echoes' is incredible.

I remember how excited I got when Surfer Magazine did anything on Gorge . It was such a counter culture/ cutting edge thing. The best part was the zero politics and weak weed. My parents built their first home on Granada in Dana Point 1973

I watched George do this on a mat on a flawless winter day at Little Drakes in January 1970 - El Nino year. Talked with George later as a macker knocked the film off the camer and he came in. What a genius.

Wow, this brought back memories. I watched the Innermost Limits at Reseda High when it first came out, having been a teenage shop rat getting indoctrinated in all things Greenough and hulls at Greg Liddle's Tarzana location. It was a shock to sit in the front row of the theater and feel like the wave was coming over your head. Everyone was ducking their heads watching the movie.
I always thought these shots were Byron. Who knew? Funny thing is, 35 years later, I was lucky enough to surf Lennox with two of my kids on a day with similar size and conditions. Lennox rocks and it's a mindblower that George could keep a mat going in the barrel to get the shot! Amazing skill in waves of consequence.

Yep, seems like a lot less than 48 years ago when I watched the Innermost Limits at Cundiths house. George shot the movie up on a bedsheet in the livingroom. Those guys took me out to the islands to surf the left, up to the ranch, and surfed rincon at night on the airmat. Still got the last of 4 Wilderness Mike shaped for me.

I wanted to say than you for this amazing film, I watched it 42 times ! it was at the ABC cinema in Luton, the manager was someone I new from Cambridge, so it was on a free pass, so to speak, Performance the Mick Jagger/ James Fox was the other Movie on the bill, and by an odd coincidence, I had working for Andrew Smith and harknes, taken part in making the actual screen I watched it on, some months before, I was staggered by the cinematic skill shown here, and I enjoyed hearing about the process involved. I do have one question, did you manipulate the speed / pitch to fit the music ? I always wondered, as I have a keen interest in Animation, I loved the soundtrack too ! thanks again for a great piece of work . Jay Taylor Cambridge UK

i saw a movie called that in Isla Vista's Magic Lantern Theatre...a single showing matinee August (I think) 1968.
Mostly I remember alot of Nat Young narrating his own surfing and alot if George on his kneeboards. The currently available Plastic Fantastic is very different.
It was very raw and some seemed uncut!
      It was like, WOW!
      ?? or '69?

Howard, I saw it in Honolulu in either 68 or 69. It was playing somewhere near my school Punahou. Yep, I remember a lot of in the tube shots, by GG. I didn't think there was a version other than You tube clips. Look on Y-tube for Fingers or China Walls, it was there that I'll swear I surfed with GG a few times. He had a see thru spoon with a donut like U-ring border of glassed foam. Broom cut blonde hair, it was him, I was only ten or so. Hawaii Kai.

then you need to see the Echoes segment of Crystal Voyager......preferably baked. I was projectionist at the Manly Silver Screen theatre in Sydney. We had Crystal Voyager on often and guys tripping on acid were so funny to see as they watched it. The theatre was owned by 3 surfers, Peter Troy, Paul Witzig and David Elfick who also made surf films which they cut out the back of the screen. Good times
