I finally tried the 2/3 alcohol 1/3 fabric softener mixture on the piano at my church. It is a 7 foot Lester from 1948 with extremely hard hammers. They were so hard that I could not use needles. They just wouldn't penetrate from about E5 up. WHAT a difference this has made. Now the tone is more pleasing and not so brittle, with longer sustain. A very interesting topic. But the music examples don't convince me, because fast playing and fast tones don't reflect the quality, but rather blur it. I want to hear tones that rise and produce good overtones without sounding shrill, but not too soft either.
If lanolin insertion or replacement would achieve a more desirable result, would there be any utility in making an airtight glove or shroud for the hammers, applying a coating of lanolin on the hammer surfaces, fitting the glove, then pulling a vacuum for a few minutes to draw air from the felt, then releasing the vacuum so that atmospheric pressure forces the lanolin into the felt. A similar method is used to infuse UV-cure optical adhesive into small star cracks in laminated automotive windscreens.

@@ChernobieffPiano ok will do, I have put a little near the staple on both sides to decent effect. But it’s incredible the transformation with the cheaper products! Any changes to the formula since then? I’ve been trying to follow along in the forum. Thanks for sharing this!
I can only speak to which I have used. All is available to me, but not elsewhere. I know Downey is used successfully. Just make sure not to use one that will discolor the hammer.

That’s the nicest Baldwin studio grand that I’ve ever heard. Sounds so responsive and really enjoyed the music samples

Todd should record an album. I'd certainly buy it!
He mostly plays Dinos music, check out his cds.
My goodness use Aqua Net hair spray. Really good.
Does Aqua net work also? I was wondering if it matters what kind of spray.
How long were you waiting on average between sprays of softener and hairspray?
Beautiful Majesty a beautiful hymn

Does it make the sound brighter? Because my grand piano is very soft
What a pianist!

Would VS Profelt be similar to the softener?
Try it and let me know. I tend not buy from the expensive piano supply houses when i can help it.

You think Downy or Snuggle fabric softener would work or is there something special about the All formula?
