The 1964 Kennedy half dollar holds a special place in numismatic history as one of the most beloved and sought-after coins by collectors and enthusiasts. Its significance is deeply rooted in the tragic events surrounding President John F. Kennedy's assassination in 1963, which led to the creation of this iconic coin.
Authorized by Congress just a month after Kennedy's death, the 1964 Kennedy half dollar was struck in memory of the fallen president. It was a departure from the standard practice of featuring historical figures or allegorical representations on U.S. coinage. Instead, the new half dollar showcased a portrait of President Kennedy, a decision that resonated deeply with the American public.
The 1964 Kennedy half dollar was issued in both silver and copper-nickel compositions. The silver version, containing 90% silver and 10% copper, was minted primarily for collectors and special occasions. This composition harkened back to the era when U.S. coins were made predominantly of silver, a tradition that was beginning to wane due to rising metal costs and economic considerations.
In contrast, the copper-nickel version (composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel) was intended for general circulation. These non-silver coins were widely distributed and became a common sight in everyday transactions, representing a shift towards more cost-effective coinage materials.
Varieties of the 1964 Kennedy half dollar include several notable distinctions that attract collectors seeking to assemble a comprehensive set or pursue specific rarities:
    1. **Silver Proof Coins**: The 1964 Kennedy half dollar was struck in a special silver proof format at the Philadelphia Mint. These coins exhibit a brilliant, mirror-like finish with sharp details, making them highly desirable among collectors. They were primarily included in proof sets issued by the U.S. Mint for collectors.
    2. **Accented Hair Variety**: Within the regular production of the 1964 Kennedy half dollar, there exists a notable variety known as the "Accented Hair" variety. This version features distinct hair details on Kennedy's portrait, particularly emphasizing the hair above his ear. This variety was the result of modifications made to the coin dies to enhance the design's aesthetics.
    3. **Special Mint Sets (SMS)**: In addition to the standard minting of the 1964 Kennedy half dollar for circulation and proof sets, a limited number were produced in a special mint set (SMS) format. These coins were struck with a higher degree of care and attention to detail, resulting in a sharper strike and more defined features compared to regular circulation strikes.
    4. **Collectible Grades and Conditions**: Collectors also focus on specific grades and conditions of the 1964 Kennedy half dollar. Coins in pristine, uncirculated condition (graded MS-65 or higher) command a premium due to their rarity and visual appeal. Conversely, circulated examples may exhibit varying degrees of wear and toning, adding character and history to each coin.
Overall, the 1964 Kennedy half dollar represents a poignant chapter in U.S. coinage history, commemorating a beloved president and embodying the nation's collective mourning. Its enduring popularity among collectors underscores the enduring legacy of President John F. Kennedy and the numismatic artistry that immortalized him on one of America's most iconic coins.

hey rocky, the hazing is called a milk spot I'm sure you are aware of that. a lot of old maple leaf coins would get that. people like to say that its the best way to know if silver is actually silver. i may be wrong but from all the time I've been collecting that's what I've come to know.

I always called the white spots that show up on some silver coins milk spots. I didn’t think hazing over the whole coin would be called that 🤷🏼‍♂️ I was also told that the white spots aren’t called milk spots too so idk what to believe anymore haha
