So artfully written... a fairy tale in an archaic, rural setting that is so other-worldly! I was deeply impressed by its unabashedly adult themes:
youthful rebellion, the pain of unrequited feelings and the violence of irrational desires
...all intricately woven into a girl's awakening.
✅ Mr. Walker has reinvented the "red riding hood" tale into an entirely new masterpiece.
The best and most eloquently written parts I thoroughly enjoyed:
⭐ “... the honeysuckle wrapped around him like a lover, the thorns ripped his skin and his blood ran red over the fresh green tendrils ...and he hung like a sacrifice in the arms of the flowers.”
Mr. Tony Walker... this is a work of genius 🙏

You are too kind. This was the first foray into such themes. I have a story in the members section called Dungarvan Castle which has similar themes, but this is the first 'public outing' of the same. To mixed review is has to be said, though in the main, favourable.

This was a great story. It read like an “adult” fairytale. I’m not usually a big fan of werewolves, but Tony Walker is fantastic reading his were-tale, and the werewolf is truly an evil beast.

The bit at the end that talks about defeating strength (violence) with beauty, it really resonates with me as a survivor of various forms of violence at the hands of men who claimed to love me. I now also volunteer to help other people who have experienced similar things to get on the right track to healing. We always say you get your revenge by living a good life, or that you "win" by figuring out how to live without those events or people controlling your life. In a sense, we as healers, counselors, and advocates work to help people find their beauty again after ugly things have been done to them. Part of healing is being able to love yourself, treat yourself kindly, practicing self-care by doing things that you enjoy, etc. Being able to see life as a time where beautiful things can and do happen, even if the past has been traumatic.
I don't know if you meant it that way, but that is what came to my mind.

I've heard it three times now, just to make sure I didn't miss anything if I'd dozed. Just like an adult fairy tale with an amazing twist. It was brilliant, thank you. I really enjoyed this story, all the way to the satisfying ending. I was surprised to hear it was a creation of yours Tony, because it felt very much like a traditional Celtic folk tale. With an element of modern true crime and the story of woman learning to recognize her own strength. What a great story for a father of daughters to write. I was so involved with what Rebecca would do next, especially after she had met the Flower-Face woman of the woods. When I heard you say this story was from your "Cumbrian Ghost Stories" I immediately looked it up and bought the Audible version. This is an excellent story and I look forward to hearing more of your own tales in the future.

I like the balance of the beauty and harshness of Nature - the youthful focus on the power of beauty and the embrace of Mother Earth - an idea that triumphs in the end. The darkness doesn't ultimately obscure it, but reveals its power. The persistence of life through death - physically piercing his powerful form, and his blood drips from a sort of kudzu effect. And we also get a little microcosm in the the honeysuckle Gawain tried to stomp out (= A little whisper of foreshadowing. Lovely. Thank you. It was a nice ride!

As a fellow Fairy and Folk tale lover, have you read The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye by A.S. Byatt? If you haven't I can't recommend it enough - I read it many years ago and the stories are still memorable.

"There is no one as empty as an idealist who has lost her belief." So true. Have to experience this storytelling again because Rude Reality kept invading first time around. Rude Reality is usually best banished by Returning Rudeness in pure form. Ignoring it--unwise, however, in the case of Rude Bankpeople. Learn so much from your stories--your own and the ones you select and your commentaries. Enriches life, mine anyway, and I am sure I am not alone. Thank you.

Reminds me of King's "Rose Madder." I like a good retribution story.

Please cover the fairy stories etc that you mentioned are a possibility. I am of Celtic and Norse Viking decent so please, anything Celtic, Druidic and Norse would make me very happy. I loved this wedding tale, especially seeing as I am a Witch, it’s nice to see us represented in a good light, much appreciated. A book you may have read is Women who run with the wolves. There the author breaks down many fairy stories, some classic, some cultural and shows the analogous and symbolic nature of them and how they apply to the psyche both conscious and unconscious. It’s a book that’s had a very profound impact on me and my life. You may find it intriguing. I wish you well. Blessed be 🙏🏻✨

I've grown up being told what a ' strong command of the English language I have' ...but alot of your narrations completely stunt my brain and command of plain old speech. 🤣😁🦄

I so enjoyed this. Thanks so much! Have you read Raymond E Feist's "Faerie Tale". You likely have but that is a wonderful melding of folk faerie tale and spooky ghost story. Thanks again for sharing. It was very easy to emerse myself into this. I had a big bunch of roses from my garden on the table as I listened lol. 3D for the olfactory🤣

I read it years ago. I had a copy but I lost it along the way. I need to get another one. Also I need to buy Mythago Wood

I recently bought an anniversary edition of mythago wood! It was life changing for me as a younger woman. One of those evocative books that stays with you long after you've read it. Changed the way I saw folk tales forever😊

When I was ten, I went through a fairy tale phase where I read every color fairy tale book the Pomona Public Library had, which was extensive. Did you know that there was a violet fairy tale book? For some reason, that stands out in my mind. Since this was awhile back, I will probably come across one of your stories where I hear about the time you and Sheila had in Edinburgh at the Fringe and on the Walk.

Aye! What a story! Good old fashioned Grimm type fairy folk tale! Very enjoyable, except - I wanted to shake the crap out of Rebecca each time she did something stupid! I actually like the forest witch! Good thing Rebecca was raised with a kind heart and didn't turn her away!

Exactly. I was aiming for a Grimm feel. I want to do more like this. There is another like this called the Tower of Ker-Zu but with a male protagonist

As someone who is a pagan witch, and Goddess follower ( in a Jungian way) and also a qualified psychotherapist/counsellor who worked with victins of domestic abuse for over a decade, I feel this story should be on the school curriculum for teenage girls.

I'm talking to the screen, "Give him the knife. GIVE HIM THE KNIFE!" But, does anyone listen to me? No!
