Thank you for this video, Dr. Jasper. I am currently in a Doctor of Education program in Interprofessional Leadership at Kent State University. I am forty-four years old, and the first college graduate in my family. In addition, I am a single father; my beautiful daughter, Livia, is seven years old and I have full custody. I just started the Ed.D. Program June 2022. Initially, I felt overwhelmed. However, I am feeling more comfortable with it. I earned my G.E.D. in 2009, at the age of thirty one years old. With my doctorate, I aspire to become a professor, and create a literacy and communication center in marginalized communities. Thank you for this informative video.
Sounds like a remarkable journey so far. Your will and determination to accomplish what you have already is a testament to your willingness to succeed. There will be days that you will feel overwhelmed, but never forget the bigger picture. Your ambition is what will drive you and the gratification of your students addressing you as professor one day will be well worth it. Best of luck to you and thanks for watching.
Thanks Dr. Jasper. Finished the Ed.D dissertation, and doing my Defense between Feb and March 2023. You are right, it's the best feeling being so close to the end.
Dr. Jasper, I have finished the Ed.D program at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. I defended my dissertation on January 22, 2024, and my degree was conferred on June 1, 2024.
Dr Jasper, excellent review!! You hit on all the important points (and the hard work on the EdD degree). With a little luck and few more sleepless nights I'll be successfully defending my EdD dissertation next month. It is a huge amount of work, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. For those considering I too highly recommend it. I dropped out of high school at 17 yr as a pregnant teen and fought hard not to be statistic, 40 years later I can say its been a rough and bumpy road but its been so worth it!!
Congratulations on your journey, and thank you for sharing your inspiring story! Your determination and resilience are truly commendable. Best of luck with your dissertation defense next month. Your hard work and perseverance are a testament to the incredible value of education and personal growth. Keep pushing forward, and may success continue to accompany you on your path 😊 ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
This was fantastic !!!!!!! You explained this so easy …. I completed my Ph.D back in April of 2018 and let me tell you …I thought I would never finish that degree ! It was ROUGH!!!!! But I did it !!!
That's absolutely incredible! Congratulations on completing your Ph.D. despite all the challenges you faced along the way. Keep celebrating your success-you've earned every bit of it! 🎉👏 ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Kathleen, massive respect for getting your Ed.D whilst juggling the job as a vice-principal and having a young daughter. I am in a similar position, considering doing a PhD or EdD and it is inspiring to know that you managed it under those circumstances. Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for this video. My whole life I was told that I wasn't smart enough or college material by people in the education field because of the fact that I've battled with a learning disability but so far, I have completed an associates, bachelors, graduate certificate, and am currently in a masters program in counseling. My ultimate goal is to counsel students at a college/university level and getting a doctorate degree would be my ultimate "suck it" moment for all of those that told me "I wasn't college material" or to "forget school and get life skills."
Thank you for explaining this. Between prayer, nervousness, and being unsure when was the ‘right’ time,…your words have inspired me to pursue my doctoral program. Thank you!
You're very welcome! Your determination to pursue your doctoral program is inspiring. Wishing you all the success in your academic journey ahead! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I am a 44-year old VP at an IB school in Beijing, China. I just got accepted to start my EdD with U of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in Global Educational Leadership. I have two boys and hope this will open up doors back in N.America (I'm Canadian) in Colleges or Universities Teaching or in Administration. I'm not interested in K-12 Education once I complete this. Good to known the options available to me! This video was very insightful. All the best!
Thank you. I am a 25 year old pursuing a teaching credential right now, but I’m so hungry for more. I also want to reach the top of the pinnacle! This video was so informational, thank you!! Please post more about EDD and what Master’s benefit an EDD
You're welcome! It's great to hear that you found the video informative. Pursuing EdD can be a fantastic choice if you're looking to reach the pinnacle in the field of education. EdD programs often focus on leadership and applied research in education, and they can open doors to various educational leadership roles. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Thank you so much ! Great video . Please do more videos in the Ed.D process , dissertation, etc . Im graduating with a masters in health administration and I’m considering going back for an Ed.D in organizational leadership or in educational leadership . I would love to hear more about your perspective . Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for providing this information! I just received my master's and have been thinking about getting my doctorate. I have been doing research on the different types of doctorates and your video really helped break it down for me.
I am getting my EdD from the University of Texas at Austin. I started in 2022 snd Will graduate next April 2025. I will soon start writing my dissertation in August
Best of luck with your dissertation writing and congratulations on nearing the Finish Line of your EdD program 🙂 ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
This is a wonderfully informative video. I am pursuing my MED in SPED and wanted more information about Ed.D. and what career paths I could pursue with this degree. Keep up the great work!
Thank you, Dr. Jasper. My career transitioned from managing pension plans for a small consulting firm as a Team Leader in the Actuarial Science field to becoming a Certified Math Teacher. My career in Corporate America lasted for about ten years before deciding to become an educator. While in Corporate America as a Team Leader, I managed a few analysts and always heard that I was a very effective instructor who could break down specific terminology into plain English that young analysts could understand. At one point, the Actuary I was reporting to said" "You could be a great teacher" or "You are a warrior because no matter what you touch, it always shines". After ten years in Corporate America, I decided to leave the Pension Consulting business and started my career in Adult Education as an hourly teacher to get my feet wet. In the process, I went back to school to do my Master of Arts in Education and successfully passed the Praxis Exams and student teaching, which allowed me to work at another district as a full-time math teacher. I taught middle school 7-grade to learn classroom management ("baptism under fire") before I taught 9-12 for a couple of years in a regular high school setting. During these years as a High School Math teacher, I had a great mentor who helped me become an effective math educator by sharing his years of experience in making math connections making my teaching experience memorable. However, I could not stop thinking about Adult Education because in this setting students who do not fit into the school system, from age 17 and over have an opportunity to earn their GED or High School Diploma. These groups of students face tremendous challenges economically, socially, and academically. I felt all of my knowledge was better off serving this group of students as long as there was a full-time position, which once it became available I applied for it and I have been here ever since. In the process of working as a full-time teacher in Adult Education, I earned my Professional Certification as a math teacher, I was selected by the Society of Hispanics of Professional Engineers (SHPE) Educator of the Year 2022-2023, and just recently I was nominated by my math colleagues at one of the Community Colleges in CT to be listed in the Board of Regents for Adjunct Faculty for the 2023-2024 school year. I know for a fact that I am not interested in pursuing a 092 Administrator Certification to work as an assistant principal or principal because I just do not see myself meeting the demands of these two job descriptions, however, to open my horizons away from mathematics, I am thinking about the Ed.D program. Your input will be greatly appreciated because the real motive is for my own satisfaction to know how else I could help our student population or newcomers in the teaching field perform to have all of the tools to become effective educators.
Pursuing an Ed.D. program could indeed broaden your impact and deepen your ability to support both students and educators. Your extensive experience and success in teaching make you well-suited for such a program. Best of luck in your decision-making process! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I just found your channel today, Thats probably my third video watched and already so inspiring, got me insights and big motivation. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome. I hope to do more videos on that soon. I have two so far. You can see them in this playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLBtoj0Jl2SNxe_tjJBwuXGWnmBvoa3HTq Thanks for watching :)
Dr. Jasper this video was exactly what I was looking for! thank you for being so helpful, honest and transparent about the whole process! I will be graduating from my masters next week and definitely will be looking into starting my doctorate degree very soon! ❤
That is amazing. Good luck on your exams. My mom told me when I was totally overwhelmed with my doctorate, "Kathleen, how do you eat an elephant?" I was annoyed and she said, "One bite at a time." Its great advice. So happy for you. Keep going!
You're very welcome! We're glad we could help clarify things for you. Best of luck with your studies and your future endeavors! You've got this! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I compliment the speaker in this video because if there is an opportunity to advance yourself through education, then do it. I earned my master's in 2020 in Higher Education Administration and a certificate in Communication and Leadership in 2023. I did it to honor my father, who passed away in 2018. I do not have plans to pursue a doctorate; instead, I am interested in going to bible college to work in ministry. I still encourage everyone who wants to pursue a higher degree to do it because the experience can significantly impact and improve your life from a professional, educational, and personal perspective.
Thank you for your kind words! Congratulations on earning your master's and certificate - it's a commendable achievement. It's touching to hear that you pursued this in honor of your father. Best of luck on your future journey to bible college and in your ministry aspirations. Your perspective on the transformative power of education is inspiring. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
You've got it. I have a whole series I'm putting together. There is not a lot of support once you hit the dissertation phase. So I am working on some videos for sure. They'll be up soon :)
I really don’t know how this came up on my feed but wow, I am so thankful! I’ve always wondered what I should do once I’m done with my master’s degree. What a great video with extremely useful and helpful information!
@@KathleenJasperEdD So are EDD programs offers via an online/distance learning platform that offer a capstone vs a dissertation less credible or a waste of time and money? I look forward to your response and value your input on this topic. Thank you for all the videos you make. I’m currently working on my Master of Arts in Teaching-Special Education at WGU. Online programs work best for me because I have to work.I consider myself a life long learner and if I go past the Masters I want to make the best choices.
I earned a B.A. in English from Florida Atlantic University. I also taught in the public K-12 system for about three years. After this, I went back to school for my M.Ed. After about 7 years working in higher education, I am considering whether to earn an Ed.D., a Ph.D. in Ed. Leadership, or going back to school for a B.S. in Accounting. While in my M.Ed. program, many of our courses mirrored Ed.D. courses. Also, one of my friends from undergrad (also an English major) agreed with me that our English degree (and it’s required readings and essays) was MUCH more difficult than our M.Ed. program. This post is to say, if you made it through undergrad, unless you earned a General Studies degree, you should have absolutely no problem knocking out a graduate degree.
I got my Master's in philosophy years ago with the goal of someday becoming a university professor. Since that time, I've been a dedicated high school teacher at an international program in China. I'm now seriously considering doing an online Doctor of Education program, as I've never felt right with abandoning my goal of reaching the highest level of academia, and it would seem to actually carry practical weight going forward as a teacher (whether at home or abroad).
It's commendable that you're considering pursuing a Doctor of Education. Your dedication to education is admirable. Such a qualification could indeed bring practical benefits to your teaching career, both domestically and internationally. Best of luck with your decision! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Interestingly enough, in the UK and most Commonwealth countries, the academic tradition is not to preface your name with "Dr" but just to add "Phd" at the end of your name, if academically required. Only medical doctors are allowed the privilege of prefacing their names with "Dr". However, I'm not too sure if that academic tradition continues.
I currently attending Liberty University where I am pursuing a Ph.D. in History. After I finish my Ph.D., I will pursue an ED.d in Higher Education Administration in Educational Leadership.
This comment speaks to me as I have been accepted to both a PhD and an EdD program. I wish I could do them both at the same time! But I know that’ll be too much work. So I am seriously considering doing one for now and then the other when I finish.
We are working hard on trying to provide content for many different certifications. Check back periodically to see the updates we make. Thanks for watching.
When I dont have single extra minute I was offered a Doctor of Education. After I watched this video, I decided to accept it. Best time to do is right now as you say. Thank you very much..
You're welcome! It sounds like you've made an exciting decision. Your commitment to seizing the moment is commendable, and we wish you all the best on your educational journey. Good luck! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I have 2 masters. I wanna do EDD.,, but I dread more work and time. I’m so over school lol but I work at a school so good discounts. It wouldn’t help my work at all. It just would be a personal goal. Btw- I got all my degrees online and would as well with Edd
It sounds like you've achieved a lot already with two master's degrees! Pursuing an EDD would undoubtedly be another significant accomplishment, especially with the added benefit of discounts through your workplace. While it may not directly impact your current role, if it's a personal goal that excites you, it could be worth considering. Just remember to weigh the workload and time commitment against your current priorities and overall well-being. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
This was very encouraging to me. I've been doing general research on how to get my BA and then MA faster so i can move along right into PhD studies as soon as possible to keep the ball rolling while i'm used to all the school flow of things. I plan to get my BA in elementary education, then MA in secondary English, since these are what WGU offers. I was sharing to ask; do you think that these would suffice if i then went to a graduate program for a PhD in Philosophy (i also want to minor in Classics/Classical studies)? This is all just what i've realized i'm passionate about in evaluating what fuels me and keeps my passion and joy for life going. My sparkle to everyday, my magical moments during my initial self-studying for Google IT support was the time i allowed to listen to and or read about Philosophy, and or Lit/gen. Classical education. Again, this was for fun, in my own free time. I mean, it would get me emotional to learn about these things and then contemplate and later engage in conversations with friends and family. I would explain things to them since they were interested but didn't have the time to learn about it all. Anyyyyways, got excited there, sorry, so...would that be alright do you think? I read somewhere in some PhD program in my research that you'd be better off having a BA and or MA in anything at all, even something not in the field focus you're going for. I took that as my okay to move forward with just getting what degrees i have available to me to ready me best i can for the lifestyle change. Though, as of right now, i do already live a pretty hermit scholar life due to also being a writer working on my books in my free time. Sorry for ranting again, seems like you went a similar route of getting Bachelors, Master then going for the Doctorate, and they seemed to be a bit separate in areas but still were fine. I want this really bad but i also don't want to waste time and money, please lmk as soon as you can since it's hard to find answers to this sort of thing for some reason.
Your plan to pursue a BA in elementary education and an MA in secondary English before applying to a PhD program in philosophy seems solid. While some suggest degrees in related fields, your passion and dedication matter most. Your background could offer valuable perspectives, and your self-directed learning shows your commitment. Reach out to programs you're interested in for specific guidance, but keep nurturing your curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
it is NEVER too late. It takes about 4-5 years which includes the year for the dissertation. There are some speedy programs out there that will get you through more quickly. However, I did a traditional program that had 4 years of course work and then the dissertation. Do it! It's never too late. I am going to do more videos on this. People have a lot of questions.
I'm currently doing my masters in elementary education and I want to go for Ed.D in educational leadership.I have no experience in teaching so far.I started school again after 15 yrs. What would you suggest?
Question: What can a person do Academically (work wise) if he has a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in education? Thank You, and good day. Nov. 2024, USA
Hi there. With a bachelor’s in history and a master’s in education, a person can pursue roles in secondary teaching, higher education support, curriculum development, museum education, school administration (with additional certification), or online educational content creation. ~Kathy Customer Support at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Do you think I could survive doing an online Ed.D program by having a full-time job in the morning, teaching a couple of days each week for 15 weeks for an hour and 45minutes, and still have time to complete the demands of an Ed.D program? Your input is greatly appreciated.
Balancing a full-time job, part-time teaching, and an online Ed.D program is challenging but possible with strong time management and organization. Many people have successfully juggled similar commitments. Key strategies include setting a strict schedule, prioritizing tasks, and possibly seeking support from family or colleagues. Assess your energy levels and stress tolerance to ensure you can maintain this balance without compromising your well-being. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I needed to hear this! I’m contemplating EdD while I’m finishing up my MSOL @ Pepperdine. Fellow weirdo here lol. Life Long Learner. I’m a new empty nester from being a single mom of 3 college graduates (woohoo) & divorced, so my EdD will be my newest baby!
That's amazing you're going for it. Well done. I have a ton of leadership videos on this channel that will help. Let me know how things are going for you :)
@@KathleenJasperEdD thank you! I will for sure. I’m meeting with my advisor this coming week to find out course and program details to continue@ Pepperdine!
I would really want to thank you for all the work you do.It has been so so helpful.I'm currently doing my Masters in Elementary Education. I'm planning to do a Ed.D in educational leadership after I get my licensure.I have no experience in teaching so far. Some Universities need to have some work experience to get enrolled but most of the Universities don't have this criteria at all. What would you suggest? I would really appreciate a response.Thank you again.
I would definitely get some experience in the classroom. You have to have that to be an AP or any other leadership position. You can become an adjunct professor (the pay is horrible). You can also get into the public school system and apply to be a teacher. You need classroom experience. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and your kind comment.
I was in school for Ed D... One class cost me 2300.00. I passed that one class and promptly withdrew because I knew the salary bump wasn't enough financially to justify getting that degree. I am now getting a specialist, significantly more financially manageable. Perhaps I'll attempt a doctorate again after I win the lottery.
Yes it is expensive. Although my doctorate was less expensive than my undergrad. You can always research tuition waivers and other resources colleges have available. Lots of that money goes unused because people do not even know it's available. Good luck.
@@KathleenJasperEdD, do you have any videos on how to get tuition wavers or other funding for an Ed.D. program? I am almost finished with my Ed.S. with a focus on becoming a principal. Just have a couple classes this summer and the internship in the fall. I have been debating whether to go on for an Ed.D, but will definitely need some help with funding it. Your videos are amazing and so helpful!
I'm a senior Instructional Designer in tech and would love to pursue an EdD but I don't want to work in schools. What other options outside school and non-profit are available for me?
Choosing the right university for a Master's in Educational Leadership depends on your specific goals and preferences. Consider factors like your career aspirations, preferred location, program focus, university reputation, and whether you prefer an on-campus or online format. Aligning these elements with your personal and professional objectives will help you make the best decision. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Hi Dr. Jasper, I am granted a scholarship from my government (am an Indonesian) to pursue my doctoral study in the USA. I've been accepted by 2 universities for Fall 2024 (D.Ed. in Teaching and Curriculum in the University of Rochester NY and PhD. Language,Literacy, and Culture in the UMass Amherst). Frankly,am at the crossroad at the moment, but your video has profoundly open my eyes. If you read this comment, could you please give me an affirmation regarding those program? Thank you very much, and warm regards.
Congratulations on your scholarship and acceptances! Both programs offer exciting opportunities. Trust your instincts and choose the one that aligns best with your goals. Whichever path you take, you'll excel. Best of luck! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Hi Dr. Jasper Thank you for responding to me. I wanted to work as a professor, as a part-time (side) job in the summer while teaching full-time as a teacher. However, you mentioned that professors must continue researching, writing and publishing articles. Honestly, I do not want to continue research after completing the program and dissertation. Can I apply the Ed.D degree differently while still being a full-time public school teacher? And if I do end up working at the university level, what is the workload for research and writing articles? How long? How many pages to write? I have not yet reached the stage of a concept paper and dissertation, but I do not know what I want to focus on regarding curriculum and instruction. Any tips or advice?? Any books? Just having mixed feelings and curious about all of this. thank you
It's entirely possible to apply an EdD degree differently, focusing on teaching and curriculum development without extensive research. Workloads for research at universities can vary, so it's essential to discuss expectations with potential employers. The best path for you will depend on your personal and professional goals. Remember that there's no one-size-fits-all answer, and there are various ways to make the most of your EdD degree while maintaining your full-time teaching position. It's all about finding the balance that suits you best. Good luck with your decision-making process! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Dear kathleen, I'm a master student of Educational administration in Iran. I want get my PhD from one of the US university. Which is better for me? Phd or EdD? Thank you ❤
Great to hear about your interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Administration in the US! When deciding between a PhD and an EdD: PhD: Research-oriented, academic focus, ideal for those interested in academia or research. EdD: Practice-oriented, leadership focus, suitable for careers in educational leadership or administration. Choose based on your career goals and whether you prefer academic research or practical application. Best of luck with your PhD or EdD journey! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
That all depends. If you're looking for the best ROI, I would say get your master's in a program that will earn you more money. For example, if you become an assistant principal, you'll most likely need a master's in ED Leadership. Be sure to check with your state. Then you can get a job that pays significantly more. But if you're looking to get a master's degree in something you love, you may want to go with an area like reading or special education. Those do not usually set you up for more money, but they may land you a job you love. Before you choose, be sure to evaluate what you really want and what it will cost. That is very important. I will do more videos on this topic; it seems to be a subject many have questions about. Thanks for watching.
Hello. Thank you for the information. I am new to this channel so I would love some clarity; you earned an EdD but are no longer working in Education but in Business? Would you have preferred a DBA, instead?
Hi there. The skills and knowledge gained from an EdD are extremely valuable, even in the field of education business. The emphasis on organizational leadership, management, and training is particularly relevant. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. 😊 ~Kathy Customer Support at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I am currently working on my Masters in Social Science Secondary Ed. I am wondering if I should get a second masters in educational leadership or just a quick certification that's about 24 credits and then go for the doctorates? I have no clue on what to get my doctorates in?? Any advice
Deciding whether to pursue a second Master's in educational leadership or opt for a quick certification and then pursue a doctorate can be a significant decision. Here are some points to consider: Career Goals: Reflect on your career goals and where you see yourself in the future. Do you want to move into educational leadership roles, such as administration or school leadership? If so, a Master's in educational leadership would be more directly relevant. Doctoral Studies: Think about what field you might want to pursue for your doctorate. While it's not necessary to have a doctorate right away, having an idea of the field can help you decide whether to pursue a second Master's or a certification first. Time and Commitment: Consider the time and commitment required for each option. A second Master's will typically take longer than a quick certification. Doctoral programs also require a significant time commitment, so it's important to balance your current workload and personal life. Educational Pathway: Check with potential doctoral programs you're interested in to see if they have specific requirements regarding prior degrees. Some programs may prefer candidates with a Master's in a related field, such as educational leadership. Consultation: Speak with advisors, mentors, and professionals in your field to get their perspectives. They can provide insights based on your specific circumstances and aspirations. Financial Considerations: Factor in the cost of each option and whether your current program can be applied towards further studies. Ultimately, the decision should align with your career goals, interests, and personal circumstances. If you're unsure about what to pursue for your doctorate, taking some time to explore different options and gain some practical experience in the field might help clarify your path. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
I disagree with the video and the popular sentiment. If we are being honest, there are differences of quality and rigor. In recent years, in general, the rigor involving all college and graduate degrees has dropped, depending on which college you attend. This even includes the PhD. But no one I know who has received their EdD did a dissertation. I'm sure exceptions are out there, but everyone I know, including myself, who has received their PhD has written a dissertation, not a "capstone project." I know people who choose the EdD because the PhD's emphasis on research and writing is too overwhelming. All leaders in education (especially in colleges and universities, even small community colleges) should be able to write and research, even if they don't play the publication race. A JD degree is one of the oldest and respectable practical doctorate, but we also see others in healthcare; I understand these kinds because their fields' practice isn't as intertwined with philosophy and theory, but we have a much more difficult time separating theory and praxis in the study and practice of education. Right now, I am seeing a lot of issues in colleges, especially in community colleges, where administrators with EdDs are taking over, and it is causing issues because of their lack of research skills and theoretical knowledge and thinking. Many of these admin came up from high schools, and they are just applying high school ways of doing things to the collegiate level. I don't know if you know anything about HS rankings globally and where the US stands, but colleges should not follow HSs. The RUclipsr can disagree and provide her opinion, but for her to say people don't know what they're talking about is absurd. The following is something I have not researched, but I believe a lot of schools that may not have the ability (faculty, resources, meet accreditation standards, etc.) to have a PhD program have an EdD program, so this should tell you something, too. You can receive a lot of practical doctorates from schools that have no other graduate degrees or terminal degrees.

@@KathleenJasperEdD I'm a private person when it comes to social media (the clue is the Aristotelian username), but I'm an English professor with publications in literary history, modernism, and the Harlem Renaissance. I've been a professor for over 30 years, and I am not all that proud of my dissertation anymore. But my credentials or yours is not relevant to my post. I saw your video, and I noted, there are exceptions, but if you teach in college and are aware of the state of collegiate education, then you know that much of what I stated has merit. Paglia and others speak of the "administrative masterclass," and many are coming out of thee EdD programs. Your flexing does little to dent my arguments. To state that there is none or that people who criticize the EdD don't know what they are talking about is certainly extreme and overlooks that intelligent people make valid points otherwise. I would and anyone reading this thread would be better off if you responded to the points I made.
I am looking into pursuing a Doctor of Education program in the next two or three years. I have a Master of Arts in Higher Education Administration that I received in 2010 combined with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science/Criminal Justice from 2006 and presently work as an academic advisor. I plan on pursuing it in Higher Education Administration, but I am unsure on what to specialize in. It could be first-gen students, students on academic notice, first-year student-athletes, or college students with disabilities. Should I make a top three list of primary areas to focus on or the state to pursue it in? Thank you for the informative video.
Given your background and interests, it sounds like you have a solid foundation to pursue a Doctor of Education program. Creating a top three list of primary areas to focus on could be beneficial for clarifying your goals and aligning them with your passions and expertise. Additionally, considering the state in which you plan to pursue the program is crucial for factors like residency requirements, program offerings, and networking opportunities. Good luck with your decision! ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Hello. Great video. I’m currently a sophomore in college Studying History and Education. I’d like to ultimately become a college professor at a community college lvl (so it’s more teaching rather than research based is what I’ve been told). Is it possible to get an Educational Doctorate and be able to teach at a community college or should I go for the PhD?
Great question. You can start teaching at the state college level with a master’s degree. You’d be an adjunct. The pay is terrible but I loved it. Once you do that, find out what the college prefers. Most college professors are Ph.Ds. But some of us leave k-12 with a doc degree and teach too. Good luck!
No I did not have a topic in mind until later in my program. But I knew about a year in what I wanted to write about. Your doctoral courses will help you decide as you learn about new things that interest you. Thanks for watching.
I am in year 3 of the EdD program in leadership. I have the dissertation draft completed. I need 5 more classes, and two are the dissertation work with the advisor. So I am close. It takes about 20-30 hours a week of study plus the classwork time. It is a lot of work. I would agree don't lead with the Dr so and so.
The finish line is in sight. You can do it! It feels AMAZING to be done. The five min after my dissertation defense and when I knew I had made it was one of the best days of my life. Let me know how things go.
Comparing the ROI of an Ed.D. versus a Ph.D. in monetary terms can be complex. Factors like field, career goals, and job market demand play pivotal roles. Generally, Ph.D. holders may earn higher salaries due to research-focused roles, while Ed.D. holders often pursue leadership positions in education, which may offer competitive compensation. Ultimately, ROI depends on individual circumstances and professional aspirations. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
OMG! I can definitely see the respect thing once I completed my Ed.D and added it in my signature. I’ve been working with specific departments on campus and it was like pulling teeth to even get an email back, for some reason that’s changed 😂
In your opinion, from an academia perspective, does it look better for the President of an Institution of Higher Education to have a Ph.d or an Ed.d to his/her name? I am curious about this because while such a position is within academia, thus pointing to a Ph.d, the Ed.d better prepares, in my opinion, the administrative side of any job, just like you have discussed. I appreciate your thoughts.
I'm with you. I think the Ed.D. would prepare a university president better than the Ph.D. However, university presidents' credentials include all sorts of experience and degrees. You never know where life is going to take you.
Yes, absolutely. It is a doctorate. You can teach at the university level with a master's although the opportunities are better with the doc. Thanks for watching.
Hi, I have my Ed.D, but having a hard time getting a good job. My goal is to work in the school system so as of now of studying for the GACE exam to become certified..once I pass those exams, I believe the doors will open .
Thank you for sharing all of this information. I have no experience as a teacher; I am in Texas, currently pursuing a Master Degree in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in RMS. At the same time, I am working to get my certification to be a reading specialist. I like more the idea to work with small groups of people. I believe leadership jobs are awesome; but honestly, that would be too much for me. Getting a PhD would probably be the best option, based on what I know I can achieve for myself without thinking on quitting later on or once I start my teaching career.
Thank you for the video! I am one year into my Ed.D. program. I'm getting an Ed.D. in Special Education. I love being a SPED teacher and I can't wait to be able to help more students with disabilities. I have heard some people poo-poo the Ed.D., but not too many. It is definitely hard to do while working full-time as a SPED teacher! My students ask me about new TV shows and if I've seen them. I tell them I don't have time to watch TV! But when I graduate, it will all be worth it!
Hello ma'am, thank you so much as your video came in absolutely timely. For me, my goal is to become a Dr. in the field of education, stay in the academia, eventually, drive positive change and impact, specifically in the field of education. But I didn't understand the meaning of Ed.d nor what it entailed, but i submitted my application for it about some 48 hours ago. Now, I feel worried because I am not sure I applied for the right thing. I saw my specific field of interest, but what difference does it really make? Would i still be addressed as Dr., at the end of my Ed.d, which i applied for? Does Ed.d create opportunities for me inside the academia as long as i want? Thank you for the feedback.
Hello! We're glad the video was timely for you. The Ed.D., or Doctor of Education, is indeed a doctoral degree that focuses on practical applications of research in the field of education. While the specific requirements and outcomes can vary by institution, completing an Ed.D. should still earn you the title of "Dr." upon graduation. The key is to ensure that your specific field of interest aligns with the program you applied for. Typically, an Ed.D. does open doors within academia, allowing you to contribute to positive change and impact in the education sector. It's a respected credential that can lead to various opportunities in research, administration and teaching. If you're uncertain about your application, it might be helpful to reach out to the admissions office or program coordinator for clarification. They can provide insights into the program's focus and how well it aligns with your goals. Best of luck on your journey to becoming a Dr. in the field of education. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Thanks for sharing Boss grateful for your team ❣️. I am looking forward to being a Principal. Though I have worked for some time. But since I am now 56 years of age. So no scope to do a PhD. But thanks for your motivation. Stay blessed all your team 💕

At my university there is a bias against Ed.D’s . My current boss has a PhD and the search committee for her position refused to interview anyone without a PhD. In that search there were a few EdDs with stellar resumes that weren’t given an interview. I am an international education professional and find myself in a tough spot. I feel like EdDs align much more with my interests and career path because I want to solve problems and be a practitioner which would mean at my university working in administration not as a faculty member. But if I want to grow at my university I would need a PhD since it’s an unwritten rule there that you need one. What do you recommend?
I recommend you do whatever you think is best for you. Academia is judgy. That's part of it. I love academia, but it can be annoying at times. Do what makes you happy, and forget about everyone else. It is your students whom you should be worried about. They are the most important people in your profession.
@@KathleenJasperEdD thank you for the advice. Yes lately I’ve been having many experiences where faculty do not put students first, but rather themselves which is disheartening. But this is very wise advice to do what’s best for myself and the students. Thank you!
If I were a teacher for 10 yrs, and get my EdD in leadership during my teaching yrs, then get licensed and intern for principal, can I qualify Doctorate pay raise and respect when I become a principal?
It depends on your district. However, you should get credit for that degree. You may even get credit and a stipend even if you're not a principal. Some districts reward advanced degrees with a stipend or pay raise regardless of your position. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for all the info. I am just thinking about master degree, I am middle school teacher aand I want to step forward on my professional life. Do you have a list o pages where we can looking for and serch for masters degree? I want to know more about fees, cost and virtual education. thanks!
It all depends on the school. What you do is go to the universities you're interested in attending and go to their program requirements page. That will have everything you need, Every school is different so you have to do your research.
@@KathleenJasperEdD thanks you!! you are the best!! another question (pleeassee). Im foreigner teacher and I want to apply for a teacher job. Where I can find those jobs?
I'm in my edd right now and I'm having rethinking- is this really for me? I was thinking of switching programs to eds in curriculum and instruction. The reason is its difficult juggling both full-time schooling and work, plus I have no idea what I want to write for future dissertation. I'm far from this stage Please let me know your thoughts and any advice you can offer.
It's not uncommon to have doubts and reevaluate your academic path during your EdD journey. Switching to a program in curriculum and instruction could be a valid option if it aligns better with your interests and goals. Remember, it's essential to find a path that you're passionate about and confident in pursuing. ~Yiana Team Member at Kathleen Jasper LLC
Hi there. The Ed.D. (Doctor of Education) programs in the U.S. vary in their residency requirements. Some programs, especially those designed for international students or working professionals, offer fully online or hybrid formats, which may not require any local residency. However, certain Ed.D. programs may require short residencies or on-campus sessions periodically. It’s best to check with specific universities to understand their residency policies, as they may have flexible options tailored for international students. ~Kathy Customer Support at Kathleen Jasper LLC
So when you referenced doing a Dissertation you stated that any reputable university would offer a dissertation as part of their program. In your opinion do you believe that EDD programs that offer a Capstone instead such as online EDD programs are just as credible and viewed as legitimate?
@@KathleenJasperEdD Thank you so much for your reply. I really love your videos. One of favorite ones you’ve made so far is where you told about your experience as an AP in charge of discipline and how you used restorative practices to get thru to your students. I’m a big fan of PBIS and Restorative Practices.

Keep pushing forward, and may success continue to accompany you on your path 😊

@darnell I am currently enrolled in the EDD Program. What does the capstone entail? I was curious about that.
Don't ever listen to soul suckers. You can do it. Having a learning disability will help you relate to your students. Many of them struggle too.
Thank you for explaining this. Between prayer, nervousness, and being unsure when was the ‘right’ time,…your words have inspired me to pursue my doctoral program. Thank you!

Hello, I was wondering how long does it usually take to complete a Doctorate degree. Is it ever too late? Thanks
it is NEVER too late. It takes about 4-5 years which includes the year for the dissertation. There are some speedy programs out there that will get you through more quickly. However, I did a traditional program that had 4 years of course work and then the dissertation. Do it! It's never too late. I am going to do more videos on this. People have a lot of questions.

@@KathleenJasperEdD thank you so much for your response!

What universities would you recommend to do a Master's in Ed Leadership?
Choosing the right university for a Master's in Educational Leadership depends on your specific goals and preferences. Consider factors like your career aspirations, preferred location, program focus, university reputation, and whether you prefer an on-campus or online format. Aligning these elements with your personal and professional objectives will help you make the best decision.

Hi Dr. Jasper,
I am granted a scholarship from my government (am an Indonesian) to pursue my doctoral study in the USA.

@@KathleenJasperEdD Thank u so much for replying my comment. Appreciate it.
Hi Dr. Jasper
Thank you for responding to me.

Dear kathleen, I'm a master student of Educational administration in Iran. I want get my PhD from one of the US university. Which is better for me? Phd or EdD? Thank you ❤
Great to hear about your interest in pursuing a doctoral degree in Educational Administration in the US! When deciding between a PhD and an EdD:
PhD: Research-oriented, academic focus, ideal for those interested in academia or research.
EdD: Practice-oriented, leadership focus, suitable for careers in educational leadership or administration.
Choose based on your career goals and whether you prefer academic research or practical application.
Best of luck with your PhD or EdD journey!

I have a a degree In early childhood education. Which Masters programs would you recommend..

Here are some points to consider:
Career Goals: Reflect on your career goals and where you see yourself in the future.

Can I use Ed.D in Mathematics Education to teach at College or University?
You response is highly solicited.
Thank you for the good work.
Yes absolutely. If you have a masters or doctorate you can teach as an adjunct and eventually become a full-time professor.
@@GoldenMean743 I have an Ed.D. and completed a dissertation: THE EFFECTS OF MANDATED THIRD GRADE RETENTION ON STANDARD DIPLOMA

All my colleagues in educational leadership (Ed.D) were required to write dissertations. Also, many of our professors were R-1 university professors who required complicated research methods and models. In fact, my dissertation committee had 2 R-1 professors on it. We also had to defend our dissertation in front of a pannel of professors many of whom were R-1, and they did not let us off the hook.

@@KathleenJasperEdD Thank you for the insight Dr. Jasper.
Good luck!
Did you pursue your doctorate with a dissertation in mind? Is that something you need to know before pursuing a doctorate? Thank you!

Does the Ed.D. have a higher ROI than the Ph.D., monetary wise?
Comparing the ROI of an Ed.D. versus a Ph.D. in monetary terms can be complex. Factors like field, career goals, and job market demand play pivotal roles. Generally, Ph.D. holders may earn higher salaries due to research-focused roles, while Ed.D. holders often pursue leadership positions in education, which may offer competitive compensation. Ultimately, ROI depends on individual circumstances and professional aspirations.

Can you teach at the university level with an EDD?
Yes, absolutely. It is a doctorate. You can teach at the university level with a master's although the opportunities are better with the doc. Thanks for watching.
Hi, I have my Ed.D, but having a hard time getting a good job. My goal is to work in the school system so as of now of studying for the GACE exam to become certified..once I pass those exams, I believe the doors will open .
What are your thoughts on Ed.D. in Organizational Leadership?
Thank you for sharing all of this information. I have no experience as a teacher; I am in Texas, currently pursuing a Master Degree in Educational Psychology with an emphasis in RMS. At the same time, I am working to get my certification to be a reading specialist. I like more the idea to work with small groups of people. I believe leadership jobs are awesome; but honestly, that would be too much for me. Getting a PhD would probably be the best option, based on what I know I can achieve for myself without thinking on quitting later on or once I start my teaching career.
Good luck. You can do it.
It always helps to be invested in the area in which you are seeking a doctorate. It's a lot of work. But if you love it, it's worth it. Good luck!

Does Ed.D require local residency? I am from China.
Hi there.
