It has a more iconic look - in fact it might be the most iconic object in the Star Wars universe - and it is obvious that this is a giant battle station, instead of a sphere that doesn't particularly stand out as anything.
Wow! That is some very impressive work. It's incredible what can be done by individuals today - things that would have been impossible even for major studios to do convincingly , not so long ago.
